Upon the gradual addition of Al3+ to a solution of HL, the sensor showed a large fluorescence enhancement at 420 nm. The reason for this phenomenon is that the addition of Al3+ to the solution of HL results in the formation of a 1 : 1 stoichiometry of the binding mode of L–Al which inhibits photoinduced electron transfer (PET).

An anthracene-(aminomethyl)phenylboronic acid ester-BODIPY (DJ-1) structure was developed as a fluorescent sensor based on photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) for detection of water in solvents.
