Nanocrystalline phosphide catalysts were prepared for hydrogen evolution from water electrolysis in an ECPB system. CoP exhibited efficient activity and high stability. Its catalytic activity could rival that of commercial Pt/C catalyst.

A volcano relationship exists between hydrogen evolution activities and hydrogen adsorption free energies for transition metal phosphides. We further predict and confirm that Fe0.5Co0.5P exhibits the highest activity.
