Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used for electrical energy storage in portable devices and are promising systems for large-scale energy storage. However, their application is still limited due to electrode degradation and stability issues. To enhance the fundamental understanding of electrode degradation we report on the Raman spectroscopic characterization of LiCoO2 cathode materials of working Li-ion batteries. To facilitate the spectroscopic analysis of the SEI (solid electrolyte interface) we apply surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy by using Au nanoparticles coated with a thin SiO2 layer (Au@SiO2). We observe a surface-enhanced Raman signal of Li2CO3 at 1090 cm-1 during electrochemical cycling as an intermediate. Its formation/decomposition highlights the role of Li2CO3 as a component of the SEI on LiCoO2 composite cathodes. Our results demonstrate the potential of Raman spectroscopy to monitor electrode/electrolyte interfaces of lithium-ion batteries under working conditions thus allowing relations between electrochemical performance and structural changes to be established.

Cocondensation of palladium atoms with 14N2 at 4.2–10 °K leads to the formation of a binary dinitrogen complex. The complex is detected by matrix isolation infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Isotope studies using equimolar 14N2/15N2 mixtures, together with isotope frequency and integrated absorption intensity calculations, suggest that the species is tris-dinitrogen palladium(0), Pd(N2)3.

The effect of oxygen adsorption on the conductivity of PbTe films is studied. Pn junctions based on PbTe films are photosensitive in the IR spectral region with a maximum photosensitivity of 𝜆𝑚𝑎𝑥 microns. The tunneling mechanism of current flow through the pn junction is shown.

A vacuum tight furnace has been constructed and used for laser-Raman spectroscopic studies of molten salts to 800°C. The sample container is positioned within the furnace by a removable metal block, several designs of which have been used with different types of sample containers. The sample under investigation is easily and rapidly aligned in the laser beam by means of micrometer screws located on the positioning table which supports the furnace. The compactness of the entire unit allows it to be readily moved into and out of the sample chamber of the spectrometer.
