Sunscreens are essential for protecting the skin from UV radiation, but significant questions remain about the fundamental molecular-level processes by which they operate. In this mini review, we provide an overview of recent advanced laser spectroscopic studies that have probed how the local, chemical environment of an organic sunscreen affects its performance. We highlight experiments where UV laser spectroscopy has been performed on isolated gas-phase sunscreen molecules and complexes. These experiments reveal how pH, alkali metal cation binding, and solvation perturb the geometric and hence electronic structures of sunscreen molecules, and hence their non-radiative decay pathways. A better understanding of how these interactions impact on the performance of individual sunscreens will inform the rational design of future sunscreens and their optimum formulations.

Direct activation of strong bonds in readily available, benchtop substrates offer a straightforward simplification, albeit in most cases existing catalytic systems are limited to unlock such activation. In recent years, a surge of in-situ generated organic radicals that can act as potent photoinduced electron transfer (PET) agents have proved to be a powerful manifold for the activation of remarkably stable bonds. Herein we document the use of N,N′-di-n-propyl-1,13-dimethoxyquinacridine (nPr-DMQA•), an isolated and stable neutral helicene radical, as a highly photoreducing species. This isolable doublet state open shell radical offers a unique opportunity to shed light on the mechanism behind PET reactions of organic radicals. Experimental and spectroscopic studies revealed that this doublet radical has a long lifetime of 4.6 ± 0.2 ns, an estimated excited state oxidation potential of -3.31 V vs SCE, and can undergoes PET with organic substrates. The strongly photoreducing nature of the nPr-DMQA• was experimentally confirmed by the demonstration of photo activation of electron rich aryl bromides and chlorides. We further demonstrated that nPr-DMQA• can be photochemically generated from its cation analog (nPr-DMQA+) allowing catalytic functionalization of aryl halide via a consecutive photoexcitation mechanism (ConPET). Dehalogenation, photo-Arbuzov, photo-borylation and C-C bond formation reactions with aryl chlorides and bromides are reported herein, as well as the α-arylation of carbonyl using cyclic ketones. The latter transformation exhibits the facile synthesis of α-arylated cyclic ketones as critical feedstock chemical for diverse useful molecules, especially in the biomedical enterprises.

Structural and magnetic properties of a new spin crossover complex [Mn(4,6-diOMe-sal2323)]+ in lattices with ClO4−, (1), NO3−, (2), BF4−, (3), CF3SO3−, (4), and Cl− (5) counterions are reported. Comparison with the magnetostructural properties of the C6, C12, C18 and C22 alkylated analogues of the ClO4− salt of [Mn(4,6-diOMe-sal2323)]+ demonstrates that alkylation effectively switches off the thermal spin crossover pathway and the amphiphilic complexes are all high spin. The spin crossover quenching in the amphiphiles is further probed by magnetic, structural and Raman spectroscopic studies of the PF6− salts of the C6, C12 and C18 complexes of a related complex [Mn(3-OMe-sal2323)]+ which confirm a preference for the high spin state in all cases. Structural analysis is used to rationalize the choice of the spin quintet form in the seven amphiphilic complexes and to highlight the non-accessibility of the smaller spin triplet form of the ion more generally in dilute environments. We suggest that lattice pressure is a requirement to stabilize the spin triplet form of Mn3+ as the low spin form is not known to exist in solution.

Scanning transmission electron microscopy is a crucial tool for nanoscience, achieving sub-nanometric spatial resolution in both image and spectroscopic studies. This generates large datasets that cannot be analyzed without computational assistance. The so-called machine learning procedures can exploit redundancies and find hidden correlations. Principal component analysis (PCA) is the most popular approach to denoise data by reducing data dimensionality and extracting meaningful information; however, there are many open questions on the accuracy of reconstructions. We have used experiments and simulations to analyze the effect of PCA on quantitative chemical analysis of binary alloy (AuAg) nanoparticles using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to obtain very good fidelity of chemical composition distribution when the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds a certain minimal level. Accurate denoising derives from a complex interplay between redundancy (data matrix size), counting noise, and noiseless data intensity variance (associated with sample chemical composition dispersion). We have suggested several quantitative bias estimators and noise evaluation procedures to help in the analysis and design of experiments. This work demonstrates the high potential of PCA denoising, but it also highlights the limitations and pitfalls that need to be avoided to minimize artifacts and perform reliable quantification.

A progression of new N-(3'-acetyl-8-nitro-2,3-dihydro-1H,3'H-spiro[quinoline-4,2'-[1,3,4]thiadiazol]-5'-yl) acetamide derivatives were synthesized from potent 8-nitro quinoline-thiosemicarbazones. The synthesized compounds were characterized by different spectroscopic studies and single X-ray crystallographic studies. The compounds were...

Abstract Increasing interest in spectroscopic studies of human hair raises the question about the accuracy of measurement of their spectra and requires optimisation of experimental facilities. An original method of obtaining transverse hair sections without using a microtome and chemical influence is proposed. The results obtained by confocal Raman microspectroscopy of human hair differently oriented with respect to the optical axis of the measuring setup are compared. It is shown that, in addition to expected changes in the spectra measured at different distances from the hair periphery in the direction to its centre, the spectra measured in the case of hair excitation perpendicular and parallel to its axis are also considerably different.

Several publications describing high-resolution structures of amyloid-β (Aβ) and other fibrils have demonstrated that magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy is an ideal tool for studying amyloids at atomic resolution. Nonetheless, MAS NMR suffers from low sensitivity, requiring relatively large amounts of samples and extensive signal acquisition periods, which in turn limits the questions that can be addressed by atomic-level spectroscopic studies. Here, we show that these drawbacks are removed by utilizing two relatively recent additions to the repertoire of MAS NMR experiments—namely, 1H detection and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). We show resolved and sensitive two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) correlations obtained on 13C,15N-enriched, and fully protonated samples of M0Aβ1-42 fibrils by high-field 1H-detected NMR at 23.4 T and 18.8 T, and 13C-detected DNP MAS NMR at 18.8 T. These spectra enable nearly complete resonance assignment of the core of M0Aβ1-42 (K16-A42) using submilligram sample quantities, as well as the detection of numerous unambiguous internuclear proximities defining both the structure of the core and the arrangement of the different monomers. An estimate of the sensitivity of the two approaches indicates that the DNP experiments are currently ∼6.5 times more sensitive than 1H detection. These results suggest that 1H detection and DNP may be the spectroscopic approaches of choice for future studies of Aβ and other amyloid systems.
