An ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide ([Bmim]OH) was grafted on silica gel by post-grafting method. Such grafted ionic liquids (GILs) which were verified by means of FTIR, element analysis N2adsorption-desorption and TG could be used as highly effective heterogeneous catalysts toward propylene carbonate synthesis through cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with propylene oxide under solventless and mild conditions.

An ionic liquid 1- (triethoxysilyl) propyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide ([Smim]OH) was grafted on three kinds of mesoporous hydrophobic silica gel by means of post-grafting under mild conditions. The catalysts were [Smim]OH/SiO2-MTES (methyltriethoxysilane), [Smim]OH/SiO2-TMCS (trimethylchlorosilane), [Smim]OH/SiO2-CPTEO (triethoxysilyl propyl chloride). Such grafted ionic liquids (GILs), which were characterized by means of FTIR and N2 adsorption-desorption could be used as effective heterogeneous catalysts toward propylene carbonate synthesis through cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with propylene oxide under solventless and mild conditions.

A practical synthesis of the very rare sugar d-idose and the stable building blocks for d-idose, d-iduronic, and d-idonic acids from ido-heptonic acid requires only isopropylidene protection, Shing silica gel-supported periodate cleavage of the C6-C7 bond of the heptonic acid, and selective reduction of C1 and/or C6. d-Idose is the most unstable of all the aldohexoses and a stable precursor which be stored and then converted under very mild conditions into d-idose is easily prepared.

Regioselective conjugate 1,4-trifluoromethylation of α,β-unsaturated ketones by the use of shelf-stable electrophilic trifluoromethylating reagents, S-(trifluoromethyl)diphenylsulfonium salts and copper under mild conditions is described. A wide range of acyclic aryl–aryl–enones and aryl–alkyl–enones were converted into β-trifluoromethylated ketones in low to moderate yields.

The reaction between sulfur and dicyclopentadiene was optimised to form a shelf stable and soluble low molecular weight oligomer. After a simple curing process at 140 °C the material was rendered insoluble and resistant to acids and solvents. Taking advantage of the soluble oligomer, a metal surface was coated with the dissolved material which was then cured to show that a copolymer layer can act as a corrosion resistant material. Further, silica gel was coated with the soluble oligomer to test mercury removal applications. Even after curing, the polymer coated silica was an effective mercury sorbent. Additionally, the sorbent was also used to remove mercury form a diesel and water mixture indicating that mercury removal from a mixture of organic and aqueous substances is possible with this system.
