Merak hijau (Pavo muticus muticus) adalah species yang terancam punah dengan populasi yang terus menurun. Burung ini adalah jenis yang dilindungi di Indonesia, dan hidup di beberapa sisa-sisa habitat yang kebanyakan sempit dan dengan tingkat perburuan tinggi. Hal ini menyebabkan risiko kepunahan yang tinggi. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Taman Nasional Baluran untuk menyelidiki pengaruh variabel habitat terhadap kemungkinan okupansi merak hijau serta interaksi spasial dan temporal antara merak hijau dengan sapi dan herbivora besar. Kehadiran merak hijau direkam dengan kamera trap dan variabel-variabel habitat diukur di tempat kamera trap dipasang. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa kemungkinan okupansi merak hijau paling baik dijelaskan oleh model yang tidak melibatkan peran variabel habitat. Selain itu, ditemukan pula bahwa pola interaksi merak hijau dengan sapi mirip dengan pola interaksi merak hijau dengan sebagian besar herbivora besar. Tidak ada dampak negatif sapi terhadap kehadiran dan aktivitas harian merak hijau. Burung ini memiliki daya adaptasi yang cukup tinggi terhadap kondisi lingkungan yang berbeda. Penurunan populasi di Jawa mungkin lebih disebabkan karena tekanan perburuan yang tinggi daripada perubahan habitat. Habitat and Spatio-Temporal Interaction Between Green Peafowl with Cattle and Megaherbivores in Baluran National Park  Abstract Green peafowl (Pavo muticus muticus) is an endangered species, whose population is continuously declining. It is protected animal in Indonesia that occurs in remnant, and sometime small habitat with high hunting pressure, that made the animal prone to extinction. This study was conducted to investigate the influence of habitat on the occupancy probability of green fowl as well as the interaction between green peafowl and free-range cattle and wild mammal in Baluran National Park. The presence of animals in the study was recorded by camera traps, and the habitat variables were measured in the locations, where the camera traps were installed. The research found that the occupancy of green peafowl best explained by the model that not include any habitat variables. The pattern of interaction between green peafowl and domesticated cattle was similar to those of between green peafowl and the majority of wild mammal. There was no evidence of negative impact of domesticated cattle on the spatial occurrence as well as temporal activity of green peafowl. Green peafowl is a bird species with high adaptability to various environmental conditions. The population decrease of this animal in Java might be mainly due to high hunting pressure than habitat change.

Biodiversitas 19: 1690-1695. The Javan green peafowl population lives in a group system. The population applies a small size group system. The distribution of the birds in Java Island is randomly fragmented and isolated in several types of habitat and each has a small number of individuals in every group. Baluran and Alas Purwo National Parks, East Java, Indonesia as part of Javan green peafowl (Pavo muticus muticus, Linnaeus 1758) distributions have been selected for the study on the grouping system and the analysis of local distribution. The research was aimed at obtaining data and information on the grouping system and local distribution of Javan green peafowl population in Baluran and Alas Purwo National Park. The number of individuals and groups was counted by applying a transect method and a concentration method on every type of habitat where peafowls are present. The distribution pattern data were analyzed by using a formula (Ludwig and Reynolds 1988). The results indicate that Javan green peafowl population is living in small groups (2-4 birds). There are 5 types of Javan green peafowl groups in Baluran National Park (BNP) and Alas Purwo National Park (APNP). The dominant group is adult female group consisting 3 individual members. The leader of the group is a female bird. Adult males live in solitary. The group system among Javan green peafowl populations is a strategy of the birds. Local distribution of Javan green peafowl populations in Baluran and Alas Purwo National Parks is mostly in the form of clumped dispersion.

Information of javan green peafowl habitat is commontly informate as general and only discribing typical habitat used. Details information and data of the componen habitat, availability and function such as (food resources, shelter, cover, drinking site, nesting site, etc), and characteristic function of habitat componen at every habitat type are very important to be known how habitat component support to the javan green peafowl live Baluran and Alas Purwo national park is one of distribution javan green peafowl and it was choosen to study on the habitat analysis. The research was aimed to is to analysis and synthesis of availability, fucntion and characteristic habitat of javan green peafowl and to descripbe of ideal habitat for javan green peafowl. Vegetation analysis was used as method approach to obtain composition, structure of vegetation and potential food, shelter, cover and nesting site. Base on activities of the bird and combaining with use of habitat component, analysis of habitat used was done. The result showed that javan green peafowl get food at open area and feed much on grasses and shrubs.Drinking site is areal where water available contiously. The characteristic of feeding site is open area which is growth by grasses and shrubs. The shelter sites were used by the birds such as trees or ground bellow trees where are closed to feeding site. Characteristic roosting site is tall trees (emergent trees), the leaves are not dense, rather open, the branches of the trees form a relatively upright angle to the stem, and not far from the trees present the open area. The green peafowl select nest places at open area which is grow by shrubs and put the eggs at the ground. The ideally habitat of the javan green peafowl composed by open area which is growing by grasses and shrubs as feeding site, places where water resources available as drinking site, tree or shaded places as sheltering and resting site, tree, forest or dense shrubs for covering/refuge site, dust places for dusting activities, open area for dancing and open area which is growing by shrubs for nested places were compound closed each other.

Bekol savannah is places of reproduction for banteng (Bos javanicus d` Alton), water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis L), large deer (Cervus timorensis) and green peafowl (Pavo mutiacus) and for conservation of species, habitat and genetic. In sector recreation and tourism, Bekol Savannah is object for eco-tourism, that is very attractive for local tourist or foreign and to see biodiversity of flora and fauna. Set of problems are wildlife population very low result presence Acacia nilotica (L) Willd. ex Del in savannah. This plant competitive with wildlife feeding grasslands result to descent plant diversity and biomass. The conclusion of the grassland dispersal at plant of A. nilotica (L) Willd. ex Del. in Bekol savannah Baluran National Park are: (1) The grassland dispersal at plant of A. nilotica (L) Willd. ex. Del.plot 1×1 m2 have 24 species`s with importance value of wildlife feeding grasslands = 40.49%, (2). The grassland dispersal at plant of A. nilotica (L) Willd. ex Del.plot 1x1 m2 (distance of plots 1 m from center point of stem) have 27 species`s with importance value of wildlife feeding = 29.30% and (3). Productivity wildlife feeding grasslands only of to fill 8.93% from wildlife in savannah if be found plant of A. nilotica (L) Willd. ex Del.

AbstractThe green peafowl Pavo muticus is a highly threatened galliform species that was historically distributed widely across South-east Asia. Evidence shows a recent population decline and range contraction for this species, linked with habitat degradation and over-exploitation. This study aimed to determine the current known distribution across mainland South-east Asia and investigate potential habitat that could host remaining viable populations and contribute to the long-term survival of the species. We used locations from historical and recent records and habitat variables from a geographical information system database to model the probability of occurrence and classify key localities according to their relative importance for the species. Our results showed that the green peafowl probably occurs in less than 16% of its historical range across mainland South-east Asia and that remaining locations are fragmented. Four confirmed and two potential stronghold populations were identified for the species, based on the localities with high capacity to contribute to its long-term survival in large contiguous patches. These were in central Myanmar, western and northern Thailand, eastern Cambodia/south-central Viet Nam and northern Cambodia/southern Lao. Threats vary amongst countries, with continued habitat loss and degradation in many areas and hunting particularly acute in Viet Nam, Cambodia and Lao. Most of the remaining populations are in protected areas but the protection level varies widely. We propose conservation actions for each stronghold population, in accordance with the nature of the threats and protection level in each area, to prevent the local extinction of this species.
