Polianthion, a new genus of Rhamnaceae (Pomaderreae) from Western Australia and Queensland

Recent phylogenetic studies have revealed that four species of Australian Rhamnaceae, tribe Pomaderreae Reissek ex Endl., should be assigned to a new genus. This paper describes Polianthion K.R.Thiele, including one new species, P. collinum Rye, and makes the relevant combinations for P. bilocularis (A.S.George) Kellermann, P. wichurae (Nees ex Reissek) K.R.Thiele and P. minutiflorum (E.M.Ross) K.R.Thiele. The genus is defined by having two carpels, a characteristic dense stellate indumentum on both vegetative and floral parts of the plant, free stipules, long-pedicellate flowers and fruitlets dehiscent for their full length. Three species are found in the south-west of Western Australia and one in eastern Queensland.

A new genus of the family Drilidae, Drilorhinus gen. nov. with one new species D. klimenkoi sp. nov. from the South-West Iran (Lorestan) is described, illustrated and compared with all known genera of this group. The new genus differs from all members of the family in the strong projection of the anterior part of the frons between antennal insertions. Some problems of taxonomic rank and classification of Drilidae are considered.

This paper presents a new Altivasum found off Jurien Bay, Western Australia at 60 m. This new species expands our understanding of the distribution, and in particular extends the northern range of Altivasum, in the South-west Marine Region. Altivasum pauladellaboscae n. sp. is more rhomboidal than A. hedleyi Maxwell and Dekkers, 2019, which is elongated, and has the formation of tubular spines on the shoulder of axial fold on the later whorls of the spire; these spines are not formed in A. pauladellaboscae n sp. Altivasum pauladellaboscae n sp. differs from A. profundum Dekkers and Maxwell, 2018 in having acute shoulder nodules. The South Australian, A. flindersi Verco, 1914 lacks the fibriated subsutural band found in A. pauladellaboscae n. sp. Altivasum clarksoni Maxwell and Dekkers, 2019 is geographically isolated and morphologically distinct, being more elongated and fibriated. With new material available of most stages of many known Australian Paracnephia, including new species, it is now clear that certain segregates warrant assignment to new genera. This applies to Paracnephia gladiator Moulton & Adler, a Western Australia simuliid with numerous unique character states. The species is fully redescribed and assigned to Bunyipellum nov. gen. A diagnosis is provided and relationships discussed, as is historical biogeography. Bunyipellum appears to be more closely related to elements of the South American simuliid fauna than to any other Gondwanan Australian species.

Austrovelia, gen. nov. (type-species A. queenslandica, sp. nov., from North Queensland), A. caledonica, sp. nov. (from New Caledonia), and Phrynovelia caledonica, sp. nov., and P. bimaculata, sp. nov. (both from New Caledonia) are described and compared with related known genera and species. Altitudinal distribution of A, queenslandica and biogeographic affinities between New Caledonia and the Mount Sorrow tableland in North Queensland are discussed, and a generalized distribution of terrestrial Mesoveliidae in the south-west Pacific is given.

The Tricostularia Nees ex Lehm. group of genera is reviewed and formally recognised as Cyperaceae tribe Schoeneae subtribe Tricostulariinae R.L.Barrett, K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl. Molecular data from plastid rbcL and trnL–F and nuclear ITS and ETS regions are combined with a novel assessment of morphological characters to support our new classification. Six genera are included: a new genus, Ammothryon R.L.Barrett, K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl, and the named genera Chaetospora R.Br., Morelotia Gaudich., Tetraria P.Beauv., Tricostularia, and Xyroschoenus Larridon. Ammothryon, Chaetospora and Tricostularia are all endemic to southern Australia. Morelotia has one species each in Hawaii, French Polynesia and New Zealand, and three species in southwest Western Australia. Tetraria has a disjunct distribution in Southern Africa, Borneo, New Guinea and New Caledonia. Xyroschoenus is endemic to the Seychelles. Tetrariopsis C.B.Clarke (based on Tetrariopsis octandra (Nees) C.B.Clarke) is included under an expanded concept of Morelotia, which also includes Tetraria australiensis C.B.Clarke and Tetraria microcarpa S.T.Blake from south-west Western Australia. Tricostularia bennettiana R.L.Barrett & K.L.Wilson, Tricostularia davisii R.L.Barrett & K.L.Wilson, Tricostularia lepschii R.L.Barrett & K.L.Wilson, Tricostularia newbeyi R.L.Barrett & K.L.Wilson, and Tricostularia sandifordiana R.L.Barrett & K.L.Wilson are described as new species from south-west Western Australia. The following new combinations are made: Ammothryon grandiflorum (Nees ex Lehm.) R.L.Barrett, K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl, Morelotia australiensis (C.B.Clarke) R.L.Barrett & K.L.Wilson, Morelotia microcarpa (S.T.Blake) R.L.Barrett & K.L.Wilson, Morelotia octandra (Nees) R.L.Barrett & J.J.Bruhl and Tricostularia drummondii (Steud.) R.L.Barrett & K.L.Wilson. Tricostularia drummondii is reinstated from synonymy (formerly Discopodium drummondii Steud.), having previously been confused with T. exsul (C.B.Clarke) K.L.Wilson & R.L.Barrett. Lectotypes are selected for Chaetospora flexuosa var. gracilis Boeckeler, Discopodium drummondii Steud., Elynanthus grandiflorus Nees ex Lehm., Lampocarya affinis Brongn., Lepidosperma exsul C.B.Clarke, Morelotia gahniiformis Gaudich. var. minor A.Rich., Tetraria australiensis C.B.Clarke, Tetraria capillacea var. intercedens Kük., Tricostularia compressa Nees ex Lehm. and Tricostularia neesii Lehm.

Species previously referred to the genus Elatichrosis Hyslop were found to consist of a number of distinct groups, and the genus is now restricted to that group surrounding the type species exarata (Candeze). 13 species are now recognized in the genus Elatichrosis s.s., of which nine are described as new, and all are entirely Australian in distribution. The new genus Lingana is proposed for the reception of illita (Candeze), and one new species from Western Australia. All extra-Australian species are now excluded from Elatichrosis.

Notodysiferus dhondtae new genus & new species (Octocorallia: Alcyoniidae) is described from King George Sound, Albany, Western Australia. The shallow water, dimorphic, zooxanthellate genus has a massive, encrusting growth form similar to some species of warm water alcyoniid genera such as Sinularia and Lobophytum. The new taxon has both autozooids and siphonozooids in most of the area of the lobes of the polypary, but siphonozooids alone are distributed over the basal regions of the lobes. The sclerites of the new taxon are 8-radiate capstans and their derivatives. Remarks are presented on the alcyonacean fauna of the region, and the new genus is compared to similar taxa.

Compsodactylus new genus and C. scabrosus new species are described and C. martinezi (Frey, 1972) new combination and C. parvulus (Frey, 1970) new combination are redescribed and transferred from Dicrania LePeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1828. The new genus is placed in Macrodactylini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) and occurs in the South American Andean and Preandean regions. A key to the species, modification on the recent generic key to Macrodactylini, and distributional map are presented.

Shield-backed katydids of tribe Arytropteridini Caudell, 1908 are recorded for the first time in Madagascar. The new genus Toliaridectes n. gen. is proposed to include three new species from the south west of the island: Toliaridectes meridionalis n. gen. n. sp., Toliaridectes wendenbaumi n. gen. n. sp. and Toliaridectes antsycurvis n. gen. n. sp.. Elements of biology of Toliaridectes n. gen. are given and the call of Toliaridectes antsycurvis n. gen. n. sp. is described. The taxonomic position of Arytropteridini is discussed.
