Abstract The paper discusses the main results of an analysis of Spanish accounting terminology, based on the exploitation of three different corpora. The analysis was aimed at measuring the level of terminology variation in Spanish accounting and at assessing the suitability of accounting standards and companies’ financial statements for terminology extraction in the translation of accounting texts. The results evidence a terminological variation of around 25% in international accounting standards and a considerable lack of consistency in the use of accounting terminology in the financial statements of Spanish companies, both in the Spanish originals and in their English translations.

De International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) heeft recent het conceptual framework-project als kernproject aangemerkt. Het oorspronkelijke Framework for the preparation and presentation of financial statements (framework 1989) was aan een fundamentele herziening toe.

The Egyptian Capital Market Authority (CMA) examined the company’s financial statements for the year ended on December 31, 2008, while the auditors’ reports forced the company’s management, despite the objection of two of the company’s auditors, to restate its financial statements at December 31, 2008, and modify its profit appropriation statement after their publication to shareholders and the public. The research presents the problems related to the application of the International Accounting Standards no 32 and 38 “Financial assets and Derivatives,” their Egyptian equivalents, and the Egyptian Standards on auditing no 700 and 702. Further, the research identifies the differences associated with auditors issuing contradictory audit reports for a company’s single set of financial statements.

The globalizations of markets and increased international cooperation in the harmonized accounting systems have highlighted the difficulties inherent in the development of generally accepted accounting principles. The Financial Accounting Standards Board, FASB, and the International Accounting Standards Board, IASB, are therefore working - through shared projects – in conducting a “Conceptual Framework Project”, which will lead to increased knowledge and understanding of the principles of international accounting convergence. The process of international harmonization has defined the concept of “Comprehensive Income”, i.e. a new structure of the Income Statement, in which they reside clearly even charges and unrealized gains (as final assets adjustments, monetary exchange variations and so on). The Balance Sheet and the Financial Statements in general, continue to maintain an approach prone to theory of property valuation, given the shareholder, as the main carrier of social interest.
