Depression can cause people to withdraw from friendships or be avoided by others, protecting others from exposure to that depression. Yet, researchers observe depression contagion, particularly among adolescents. We address this empirical puzzle by examining the role of gender in structuring friendship networks and the implications for isolation and the spreading of depression. Using stochastic actor-based models of friendships among 421 adolescents from mixed-gender, all-girls, and all-boys classrooms in six Taiwanese high schools, we find that networks with only girls are characterized by high reciprocity and low transitivity. This, in turn, facilitates the withdrawal of depressed girls from interactions. In contrast, networks with all boys create more opportunities for depression to spread through interconnected pathways. Our computational experiment further demonstrates that local preferences governing friendship choice influence levels of network connectivity. This, coupled with depression withdrawal and peer influence, shapes depression prevalence at the network level. These findings refine our understanding of the mechanisms through which friendships expose boys and girls unequally to health risks of depression.

Abstract Homophobic attitudes and behavior are a widespread problem among adolescents, but what the role of peer relationships such as friendships and antipathies is in shaping these attitudes remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined to what extent homophobic attitudes are influenced by friends’ and foes’ homophobic attitudes, and whether homophobic attitudes serve as a selection criterion for the formation of friendships and antipathies. Participants came from three Dutch high schools across two waves (wave 1 November 2014, wave 2 March/April 2015, ages 11–20, N = 1935, 51.5% girls). Stochastic actor-oriented models were estimated for testing hypotheses. The results showed that adolescents adjusted their homophobic attitudes to their friends’ homophobic attitudes, but homophobic attitudes were not consistently related to friendship selection. Further, findings indicated that being dissimilar in homophobic attitudes increased the likelihood to dislike cross-sex peers. Together, the findings suggest that adolescents’ homophobic attitudes were to some extent subject to peer influence, but homophobic attitudes did not steer who adolescents befriended or disliked.

BACKGROUND: The impact of paediatric upper limb difference may extend beyond the child themselves to their parents and other family members. Previous research has found that feelings of shock, numbness and loss are common amongst parents and that peer support can be a buffer against stress. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to explore the experiences of parents of children with limb difference, and the role of services and prosthetic devices in these experiences. METHODS: Nine parents of children with limb difference participated in either a group (n= 2) or individual (n= 7) interview. RESULTS: Analysis of the interview transcripts revealed four themes – ‘grief and guilt’, ‘prosthesis as a tool for parental adjustment’, ‘support’ and ‘fun and humour’. CONCLUSIONS: Parents may employ coping strategies to help them adjust to their child’s limb difference, including use of a prosthesis, accessing support from statutory services and peers, and use of fun and humour within the family.
