Academic entrepreneurship education aims to train and raise awareness amongst students about entrepreneurial activity, thereby increasing the number of academic start-ups and spin-offs. However, as yet, there are very few findings on the gender-specific differences amongst potential entrepreneurs. Building on the current state of research, gender-specific differences in the form of various different components of entrepreneurial competence are examined. This study focuses in particular on (1) entrepreneurial knowledge, (2) domain-specific interest in entrepreneurship, (3) interest in leadership roles, and (4) entrepreneurial and (5) intrapreneurial intention. Based on an online survey of 281 students of a German and Czech university, the mean differences show that there are statistically significant lower values for female students than for male students for all the variables investigated, that is with exception to intrapreneurial intention. These findings underline the need for targeted promotion of female entrepreneurship within the context of academic entrepreneurship education.

PurposeThis paper provides insights about how graduates' career patterns (i.e. academic entrepreneur, self-employed or paid employed) are influenced by entrepreneurial university ecosystems (i.e. incubators and entrepreneurship education programs).Design/methodology/approachBy adopting Douglas and Shepherd's utility-maximising function, the influence of one entrepreneurial university ecosystem on graduates' career choices was tested using a sample of 11,512 graduates from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) in Mexico.FindingsOur results show the critical role of entrepreneurial universities ecosystems in facilitating employability options as academic entrepreneurship for ITESM's graduates. The study shows some insights about how graduates' risk aversion and work effort are positively influenced by the university business incubator and entrepreneurship education programs, respectively.Practical implicationsDiverse implications for stakeholders have emerged from our results. These implications are associated with potential benefits of implementing programmes oriented to engage academic entrepreneurship within Latin American universities.Originality/valueEntrepreneurial universities provide a range of employability alternatives for their students, such as to be self-employed, academic entrepreneurs or paid employees. In this scenario, entrepreneurial universities have configured entrepreneurial ecosystems (educational programmes, business incubators and other infrastructures) to support potential entrepreneurs (students, academics, staff and alumni). Despite the relevance of the environmental conditions on individuals' occupational choices, few studies have explored the role of the entrepreneurial university ecosystems on graduates' employability. In this vein, our study contributes to some academic discussions: (1) the role of context on career choice models (Ilouga et al., 2014; Sieger and Monsen, 2015), (2) the role of incubators and entrepreneurship education on fostering academic entrepreneurship on the graduates' community (Nabi et al., 2017; Good et al., 2019; Guerrero and Urbano, 2019a) and (3) the effectiveness of the entrepreneurial university ecosystems on graduates' employability (Herrera et al., 2018; Wright et al., 2017).

PurposeEmbracing the theories of gender role and career socialization, this study focuses on young adults and explores gender differences in entrepreneurial intentions and entrepreneurship education.Design/methodology/approachBased on 203 young adults, this study employs a logistic regression model to test hypothesis 1 regarding differences in gender. In addition, it performs an analysis of variance using the two groups of young adults with and without academic entrepreneurship education to detect differences in entrepreneurial intentions between men (hypothesis 2) and women (hypothesis 3).FindingsThe empirical findings from a European country trailing in university-level entrepreneurship education confirm the dominant evidence that young women have lower entrepreneurial intentions than young men. In addition, women's proclivity toward entrepreneurship is lower with academic entrepreneurship education than without.Originality/valueThis study provides new evidence from Greece, which has few studies on entrepreneurship education at the tertiary level. Scholars are advised to keep track of the new pathway exploring linkages between gender, entrepreneurial intentions and entrepreneurship education. Policymakers in Europe are encouraged to establish an approach of tailoring university courses to their students. Currently, society will benefit from entrepreneurship education curricula targeting young women based on their particular needs and interests, while nurturing their entrepreneurial intentions.
