Abstract Background and Purpose. A variety of health status questionnaires have been used in physical rehabilitation studies involving women with breast cancer, but the usefulness of these questionnaires as measures of physical, mental, and social well-being has not been firmly established in this population. This study was conducted to assess the convergent and discriminative properties of the RAND 36-Item Health Survey and the Functional Living Index–Cancer (FLIC). Subjects Both questionnaires were administered concurrently to 110 outpatients treated surgically for breast cancer at a National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Methods Bivariate correlations and a multi-trait–multi-method matrix were used to evaluate convergent validity between summary and subscale scores from both questionnaires. Discriminative validity was assessed by testing for expected differences between women who were treated for breast cancer with and without secondary lymphedema. Results Correlations between overall quality-of-life scores produced by both questionnaires were modest, indicating that the instruments focus on somewhat different aspects of health-related quality of life. Global quality-of-life and physical well-being scores were lower among women with lymphedema secondary to breast cancer. The FLIC demonstrated greater sensitivity to group differences in emotional well-being. Discussion and Conclusion The results suggest that neither questionnaire can be replaced by the other in studies of women treated for breast cancer. Both questionnaires were able to distinguish physical functioning deficits in women with lymphedema secondary to breast cancer, but symptom- or treatment-specific measures may be required to assess more subtle difficulties related to the emotional aspects of health and functioning in this population.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life-QLQ-BRECON23 in women diagnosed and treated for breast cancer undergoing all types of breast reconstruction. Methods: A total of 148 Korean women who underwent breast reconstruction were recruited from the breast cancer center to participate in the study. After performing forward and backward translation of the original English version of the questionnaire into Korean, its validity (construct, known-group validity, concurrent) and reliability were assessed. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to assess construct validity. Results: The mean age of the patients was 52 years, and 89.8% underwent implant-based reconstruction. Construct validity using confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit, and the effect size was small-to-medium regarding known-group validity. Concurrent validity was confirmed by the significant correlation between the QLQ-BRECON23 and the QLQ-BR23. The reliability of the QLQ-BRECON23 symptom and function scales ranged from 0.61 to 0.87. Conclusion: The Korean QLQ-BRECON23 can be applied to assess quality of life and its related factors, and also to internationally compare the level of quality of life in breast cancer patients undergoing breast reconstruction.

Abstract Objectives Breast cancer (BC) in women could decrease health-related quality of life (HRQoL). HRQoL becomes important to be assessed to design a relevant treatment that could improve patient outcomes. Furthermore, assessing HRQoL by measuring health state utilities becomes pivotal for health economic evaluation. This study aimed to describe the HRQoL of postmenopausal women with hormone responsive (HR+) HER2− BC using the EQ5D5L instrument in Indonesia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 126 patients in Dr. Sardjito Hospital in Indonesia. The HRQoL was assessed by interviewing BC patients using the EQ5D5L questionnaire, and the utility index was calculated using the Indonesian value set. Information regarding clinical characteristic and socio-demographic were gained from patient medical records. One-way ANOVA and post-hoc Scheffe’s test was performed to compare the utility score within the health state. Results Of the 126 patients, a mean ± SD for the age of 59.2 ± 6.1 years. The major problems of patients were pain/discomfort (75.4%) followed by anxiety/depression (54.8%). The mean (SD) of EQ5D VAS was 76.64 (14.91). Mean (SD) of utility score was 0.87 (0.10), 0.77 (0.19) and 0.58 (0.44) for free metastasis (FM), locoregional metastasis (LM) and distant metastasis (DM), respectively. Poor QoL was observed at DM health state (p<0.05). Conclusions HRQoL of postmenopausal women with HR+ HER2− BC was low. The major reported problems were pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression.

Introduction: Each year, around 16,500 women in Poland are diagnosed with breast cancer, the second most common cause of death in women. In Poland, nearly 70,000 women live with breast cancer diagnosed within the last 5 years. Quality of life (QoL) research is particularly important in cancer patients, as it provides knowledge on their psychological and physical health, as well as the environment in which the patients function, all of which is essential to implementing multidisciplinary care involving the best use of the appropriate methods. Carrying the burden of cancer is a major challenge for patients. The strategy that patients use to cope with breast cancer significantly affects their quality of life. The purpose of the study is to assess the impact of coping strategies on the QoL in breast cancer patients. Material and Methods: The prospective study included a group of 202 women who had undergone surgical treatment for breast cancer at the Lower Silesian Cancer Center and who reported for follow-up appointments at the Oncology Clinic and the Surgical Oncology Clinic. For the study, we used the: EORTC QLQ-C30 cancer questionnaire, EORTC QLQ-BR23 module, Mental Adjustment to Cancer (Mini-MAC) scale, visual analog scale (VAS) for pain intensity, as well as the patients’ medical records, hospital records, and our own survey form. Results: The mean patient age was 53 years. Most patients had been diagnosed with cancer between one and two years before. In the women studied, there was a negative association between QoL and the choice of a destructive strategy for coping with cancer, and a positive one between QoL and a constructive coping strategy. Severe pain caused by the disease and its treatment significantly decreased the patients’ QoL in multiple domains. Conclusions: Patients choosing constructive strategies obtained higher QoL scores, while greater reliance on destructive coping strategies was associated with significantly worse QoL. In all functioning domains, higher levels of pain were associated with poorer QoL and more severe symptoms associated with the disease and its treatment.

Abstract. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between psychological burden and quality of life moderated by religious coping among caregivers of women with breast cancer. A total of subjects in this study were 70 family caregivers of women with breast cancer in the Intensive Cancer Center “Tulip” Dr. Sardjito Hospital. Data were collected using three scales such as WHOQOL-BREF to measure the quality of life which has been previously adapted in Bahasa Indonesia, and Psychological Burden Scale to measure psychological burden and the Religious Coping Scale to measure religious coping were both measurements from a previous study which was modified to fit the subjects of study. Analysis of data using Moderated Regression Analysis. This study showed that psychological burden significantly predicts the quality of life (B= -0,388; p less than 0,01) with effective contribution 15 percent, whereas religious coping was not proven to moderate the relation between psychological burden and quality of life (p more than 0,05). In conclusion, the psychological burden could affect the quality of life among caregivers of women with breast cancer. Religious coping did not moderate the relationship between psychological burden and quality of life among caregivers of women with breast cancer.
