AbstractAccurate fault location in distribution systems greatly shortens maintenance time and improves reliability. This paper presents novel methods to pinpoint fault location and identify possible bad measurements for enhanced accuracy. It is assumed that network parameters and topology of the distribution network are available. The methods are applicable to a single fault as well as simultaneous faults and are applicable to both balanced and unbalanced networks. The methods utilize synchronized voltage and current phasor measurements to locate the fault. The methods are validated by simulation studies using the modified IEEE 34-Node Test System. Case studies have demonstrated that the methods are suitable for distribution systems with high penetration of distributed generations.

The current practice of Distributed Generation (DG) disconnection for every fault in distribution systems has an adverse effect on utility and stable power trading when the penetration level of DGs is high. That is, in the process of fault detecting and Circuit Breaker (CB) reclosing when a temporary fault occurs, DGs should be disconnected from the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) before CB reclosing. Then all DGs should wait at least 5 minutes after restoration for reconnection and cannot supply the pre-bid power in power market during that period. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a control method that can keep operating without disconnection of DG. This control method is verified through modeling and simulation by the PSCAD/EMTDC software package for distribution systems with DGs based on PCS (Power Conditioning Systems) and CB reclosing protection.

The distribution systems operate radially with meshed topologies thanks to tie-switches and sectionalizing switches consisting of the systems. The power distribution systems are undergoing evolutions strongly toward active distribution systems for reliability and quality of service enhancements through reconfiguration. The distributed generations are also one effective solution for the above objectives. A consumption time is one of the considerable issues that many existing methods have not been achieved for reconfiguration purpose. This paper brings an adaptive solution called modified sequential switch opening and exchange (MSSOE), which is carried out with MATLAB and MATPOWER tool, to overcome these issues. The fundamental loop has been proposed for the MSSOE method to reduce search space in the iteration process. In each step of the searching process, MSSOE observes that if any switches within the same loop of the selected tie-switch are deleted to avoid opening those switches in the next iteration. The process of MSSOE is done when the radial topology is given. The proposed method is tested with the standard IEEE 33-bus, IEEE 69-bus, and IEEE 119-bus distribution systems to observe the effectiveness of the MSSOE algorithm. Comparison to existing algorithms in terms of global solution and computation time conclude that the MSSOE is the best method.
