AbstractEnhancement of Kα yield from a metal foil covered with metal rods of submicron sizes, with low aspect ratio, irradiated by a p-polarized femtosecond laser pulses of about 1017 W/cm2 intensity is demonstrated. Obtained relative increase in Kα X-ray line emission is explained with a model of vacuum heating of fast electrons.

AbstractThe emission of X-rays from solid tin targets irradiated by low-energy (few mJ) femtosecond laser pulses propagated through air plasma sparks is investigated. The aim is that to better understand the X-ray emission mechanism and to show the possibility to produce proper radiation for spectroscopic and imaging applications with a table-top laser system. The utilization of a controlled ultrashort prepulse is found necessary to optimize the conversion efficiency of laser energy into Lα radiation. The optimum contrast between the main pulse and the controlled prepulse is found about 102. A correlation between the laser contrast value and the laser near-infrared spectra at the exit of the plasma spark is observed.

This work is devoted to the electron temperature variation in metals through interaction with femtosecond laser pulses. Our study was inspired by the last mathematical breakthroughs regarding the exact analytical solutions of the heat equation in the case of flash laser-matter interaction. To this purpose, the classical Anisimov’s two temperature model was extended via the 3D telegraph Zhukovsky equation. Based upon this new approach, the computational plots of electron thermal fields during the first laser pulse interaction with a gold surface were inferred. It is shown that relaxation times and coupling factors over electron thermal conductivities (g/K) govern the interaction between the laser pulse and metal sample during the first picoseconds. The lower the factor g/K, the higher the electron temperature becomes. In contrast, the lower the relaxation time, the lower the electron temperature.
