The radial sensitivity of the elastic scattering of the weakly-bound 6 Li and halo 6 He nuclei on medium-mass 64 Zn target and heavy target 208 Pb is examined around the Coulomb barrier energies. We present that very good agreement between theoretical and experimental results have been obtained with small χ2/N values. The fusion cross-section and volume integrals of the potentials have been deduced from the theoretical calculations for all studied systems at relevant energies. We have also analyzed the elastic scattering of the 6 He +208 Pb system at E lab = 14, 16, 18, 22, 27 MeV in order to investigate whether there is a dispersion relation between the real and imaginary parts of the optical potential.

Halo nuclei are extreme nuclear states consisting of one or more weakly-bound valence nucleons spatially decoupled from a tightly bound nuclear core. The weakly bound nature of the halo dominates the reaction probability, but the specific reaction mechanisms depend also on the core and target nuclei. Despite of the inherent complexity of the reaction process, simple two-body models and direct reaction theories can be used to extract useful information of the structure of the halo nucleus and its dynamics. These ideas are discussed using selected experiments of Coulomb barrier reactions with one- and two- neutron halo systems.

Reactions induced by four weakly-bound nuclei on a lead target, at energies around the Coulomb barrier, are described using the same four-body continuum-discretized coupled-channels formalism. The nuclei considered are the halo nuclei 11Li and 6He, the stable nucleus 9Be and the proton-rich nucleus 10C. The differences and similarities on the reaction dynamics are addressed.

An experimental overview of reactions induced by the stable, but weakly-bound nuclei 6 Li , 7 Li and 9 Be , and by the exotic, halo nuclei 6 He , 8 B , 11 Be and 17 F on medium-mass targets, such as 58 Ni , 59 Co or 64 Zn , is presented. Existing data on elastic scattering, total reaction cross sections, fusion, breakup and transfer channels are discussed in the framework of a CDCC approach taking into account the breakup degree of freedom.
