Abstract This study presents the numerical analysis on the inter-blade vortex characteristics along with the blockage effects of runner blade in a Francis hydro turbine model with various flow rate conditions. The turbine model showed different flow characteristics in the runner blade passages according to operating conditions, and inter-blade vortex was observed at lower flow rate conditions. This inter-blade vortex can lead to performance reduction, vibration, and instability for smooth operation of turbine systems. The previous study on blockage effects on various runner blade thickness, showed its influence on hydraulic performance and internal flow characteristics at low flow rate conditions. Therefore, the inter-blade vortex characteristics can be altered with the blockage effects at low flow rate conditions in a Francis hydro-turbine. For investigating the internal flow and unsteady pressure characteristics, three-dimensional steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes calculations are performed. These inter-blade vortices were captured at the leading and trailing edges close to the runner hub. These vortex regions showed flow separation and stagnation flow while blockage effects contributed for decreasing the inter-blade vortex at low flow rate conditions.

Based on the theoretical derivation of hydraulic coupling relationship between the hydropower units sharing long common tunnel,the non-linear hydro turbine model with sharing long diversion tunnel system is established and order-reduced in accordance with the demand of power system simulation. And according to the complex structure characteristics of surge tank,a method of correcting surge tank storage constant with surge tank structure coefficient is proposed. This hydro turbine model can reflect the influence of surge tank and sharing common tunnel in the power system long term process,the accuracy of model is proved by comparison of simulation results and actual recording data in power system.

The paper describes experimental results obtained using laser velocimetry in a small high speed centrifugal impeller. The formation of wakes and the effect of varying speed and mass flow rate on the flow within the impeller passages are presented. In addition, an indication of the three dimensional nature of the impeller flow is discussed (the three dimensional results being obtained using a novel Doppler anemometer).

With the operation of giant unit of hydroelectric plant represented by the Three Gorges Power Station, the vibration problem of hydraulic turbine set unit is increasingly outstanding, especially the vibration of structure induced by pressure fluctuation. In order to guarantee the normal operation of unit, model test is more important in the respect of predicting performance, increasing stability and avoiding vibration. The pressure fluctuation measurement system based on LabVIEW according to pressure fluctuation model test was designed in this paper. The system is applied to the hydro-turbine model test-bed of HEC so that real-time automatic test with the characteristics of high stability and precision is implemented successfully. It plays an important role in respects of mastering the operation characteristics collecting and analyzing pressure fluctuation signals. Moreover it is meaningful to the hydraulic engineering.
