In this paper, a phase-change-material/lightweight aggregate (PCM-LWA) composite thermal energy storage material was prepared by absorbing the lauryl alcohol, which is one kind of phase change materials, into porous lightweight aggregates (LWAs) that have an excellent absorbability. In such a composite, the lauryl alcohol serves as a latent heat storage material and the porous lightweight aggregate acts as the supporting material. In order to prevent the melted lauryl alcohol leak from the porous LWAs, surface seal processing for the PCM-LWA was necessary. In this research, pure cement paste and polymer modified cement paste were used to seal the PCM-LWA surface. Through comparison between the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests for lauryl alcohol and PCM-LWA, it can be known that the solid-liquid phase change temperature of the composite PCM-LWA was slightly higher than that of the lauryl alcohol, and latent heat of the PCM-LWA was smaller than that of the pure PCM.

Abstract In this paper, the feasibility of phase change material that used for thermal energy storage in the range of 400 ∼ 600°C in the form of latent heat is examined for nine different salts and eutectic salts. The Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) was used to perform the quantitative measurement of the phase change temperature (Tm) and latent heat (ΔH). The thermal properties of NaCl-CaCl2 at repeated heating and cooling cycles were studied with a heating chamber. The quality observation for this phase change material was also performed with this heating chamber to understand its physical phenomena during heating and cooling process. It is found that NaCl-CaCl2 is a good candidate of thermal energy storage material for its stable properties, low cost, and no toxic. Finally, the thermal storage unit with NaCl-CaCl2 as thermal energy storage material was tested to study and evaluate its performance as the application in the waste heat recovery system.

Paraffin/expanded perlite composite phase change energy-storage material (PPCM) was prepared with expanded perlite as adsorption material and paraffin as phase change energy-storage material (PCM). The DSC and SEM results showed that the internal micropores of expanded perlite were filled with paraffin; the phase change temperature of PPCM was basically similar with that of paraffin and the latent heat of PPCM was corresponded with that of paraffin based on mass ratio among PPCM. PPCM was incorporated into gypsum to prepare gypsum matrix phase change energy-storage material (GPCM), and its mechanical properties, water absorption and temperature control effect were determined. The results showed that with the increase of PPCM’s content, the 2h compressive strength, flexure Strength and water absorption of GPCM continuously declined and its temperature control effect significantly enhanced.
