Abstract Nowadays, laser communication has received great achievements owing to its advantages, e.g., large channel capacity, easy miniaturization of communication system and strong anti-interference ability in different conditions. Pulse position modulation (PPM), as an important modulation technology in laser communication system that transmit signal with lower power, is attracting much attention. However, the performance of the modulation scheme highly depends on the bandwidth of transmission. To remedy this defect of PPM, the multipulse position modulation (MPPM) scheme is proposed to increase the accuracy and bandwidth limit. This modulation scheme has stronger anti-interference ability than PPM. Therefore, there has been rising interest in studying the characteristics of the multi-PPM. In this article, we developed an appropriate mathematical model to represent a PPM transmission, analyzed the spectrum of the transmission and characterized the bandwidth of this transmission. Compared with benchmarks of MPPM scheme, its performance has been discussed. According to the analysis, MPPM strongly increases band-utilization efficiency, however PPM has a better bit error rate (BER) performance than MPPM.

This paper focuses to analyze the data rate, bit error rate (BER), flickering & bandwidth of visible light communication (VLC) system. The existing modulation scheme ON-OFF Keying (OOK) is modified and produces the trade-off between these parameters. The modified ON-OFF Keying (MOOK) is proposed in which the variation in the transmitted pulses is investigated. Therefore, the square and rectangular pulses are used to transmit zero and one bits respectively. The duty cycle of square pulse is increased to improve the flickering performance. Moreover, it utilized the bandwidth and deteriorates the BER performance. The differential MOOK (DMOOK) modulation scheme is also proposed in which the ON period of square pulse (zero bits) is removed. Therefore, the data rate of DMOOK is increased because the duration of zero bit pulse is decreased. Similarly, the high bandwidth is utilized and BER performance deteriorates. All performance parameters are evaluated on Arduino based hardware VLC system. We conclude that the BER performance deteriorates by improving flickering performance and data rate of the VLC system.

5G is the latest mobile communications standard that is spreading fast across the world. Recently defined requirements for 5G systems have led to higher applications’ requirements regarding data rates, lower requirements for latency, and higher efficiency regarding the spectrum usage. Universal Filtered Multi-Carrier (UFMC) is one new candidate modulation scheme for emergent Fifth Generation (5G) communication systems. This paper focuses on Universal Filtered Multi-Carrier (UFMC) design aspects in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in relation to the filter length used in subband filtering. Simulation results show that BER and CCDF performance varies for different filter lengths and modulation schemes. The main achievement of this work is that the results show that different Dolph–Chebyshev FIR filter lengths do not affect the BER performance both for the 64 and 256 QAM.

With the development of satellite laser communication, modulation scheme has been the key technique for the modulation subsystem. The performance in terms of bite-error rate of OOK, 2DPSK, QDPSK used in the downlink of the ground-to-satellite laser communication systems are compared with the consideration of the combined effects of both intensity scintillation and detector noise. Simulation results are given and the advantages and disadvantages of the three modulation schemes are also studied. The design of the downlink of ground-to-satellite laser communication system can benefit from this work.

Beamforming technique based the reciprocity of LTE communication system for high-speed railway is a practical way to improve the system performance in this paper. Kerdock codes, which facilitate efficient codebook and codeword search, are implemented in the LTE system for high-speed railway as the beamforming precoding codebook. The analysis of complexity and simulation results about the communication system of the beamforming with Kerdock codes (KBF) show that the proposed KBF can eliminate complex multiplications and improve the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance at large SNR compared with the existing beamfoming communication system for high-speed railway.
