Taking pipe - hollow spherical node as the object, and using ANSYS finite element analysis software, established five kinds of finite element model to analyze the stress concentration at the weld connection of the different connections of steel structures - hollow ball under the uniaxial tension. Obtained this node’s stress concentration factor, stress distribution, by changing the hollow spherical diameter and wall thickness, pipe’s diameter and wall thickness, obtained the trend of the stress concentration factor under different control ball matches. Take static tests on typical structures of two specifications 6 hollow sphere nodes, get the measured stress concentration factor, and stress distribution of this node. Through comparative analysis of theoretical analysis and experimental results, show that the two rules are consistent. The research results can provide basis for improving the pipe - hollow spherical joints connecting structural.

Parametric formulae derived for offshore structural tubular joints have been assessed for potential use for estimating stress intensification factors for pipe stress analysis. The background to these equations is given and comparisons made for a range of typical geometries. Despite the absence of a “plug” of material in a pipe joint, the tubular joint equations appear suitable for the estimation of stress intensification factors for fabricated tees subjected to moment loading of the branch. It is considered that this approach should be investigated further by code developers.

This paper presents studies carried out on grouted and ungrouted space tubular joints, with K in one plane and T in the orthogonal plane. Three models have been tested for different load cases adopting T, K, and both T and K (STK) configurations. The tubular joints used in offshore structures, especially in jacket platforms, are multiplanar and some are grouted and hence their study is essential. The stress concentration factor, SCF, as determined using the semi-empirical formulae which are applicable for planar joints are not appropriate for space, grouted joints. The results of the present study indicates that the SCF as determined by formulae for simple joints is unsafe in the plane of K and conservative in the plane of T for the space joint. The effect of the grout is to reduce the stress concentration.

An analytical method for the stress analysis of tubular joints of T, Y, K type is presented in this paper. The stress distribution and stress concentration factor of the joints are calculated. Numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract Tubular joints are common in offshore framed structures such as jackets. These joints are subjected to fatigue due to cyclic loads from waves. Stress concentration factor plays a major role in the estimation of fatigue life. Studies have been carried out in the past on stress concentration factors for these joints. However, literature on ring stiffened joints is limited. In the present study, numerical simulations have been carried out on ring stiffened tubular joints, especially the T joints, subjected to axial tension load using finite element method in linear analysis using ABAQUS software. A solid type 20-node quadratic brick element (C3D20R) has been used in the study. Stresses in hotspot locations at brace/chord intersection, ring/chord intersection and ring inner edge are examined. The numerical model has been validated using published experimental data and Lloyd’s register recommendations. Further parametric study has been carried out with 20 models, which includes geometric parameters of ring stiffener such as width of stiffener, thickness of stiffener and spacing between the ring stiffeners. The results of parametric study show a significant reduction of SCF at saddle location by placing ring stiffeners in unstiffened T joint. A set of new parametric equations are developed to calculate SCF for ring stiffened T joint at saddle location for axial tensile load.

Stress concentration factors for tubular joints were computed using solid quadratic elements. The results of the computations are compared with experiments reported in the literature and with expressions reported in the literature and in design codes. An influence of element size and element type was observed, which leads to recommendations regarding element size of four quadratic elements in thickness, which is finer than in different published recommendations. A parametric study was performed, showing that stress concentration factors from the literature are not always conservative, particularly at the crown toe of the chord, while they tend to be overconservative at the chord saddle. The stress concentration factor for the inside of the member was also computed; it is found that it can be close to the stress concentration factor at the weld toe for both the in plane or out of plane bending modes.

Tubular structures have become so much in use because of their structural performance and attractive appearance. But at the intersections of these tubular structures (i.e., tubular joints), there is stress concentration which adds the fatigue damage in structures which is exposed to cyclic loads. The stress concentration factor plays a crucial role in the computation of fatigue life of tubular structures exposed to cyclic loads. This paper aims to review the factors governing stress concentration factor at tubular joints.
