Abstract In the rectangle Ω = [0, a] × [0, b] the nonlinear hyperbolic equation 𝑢(2,2) = 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑢) with the continuous right-hand side 𝑓 : Ω × ℝ → ℝ is considered. Unimprovable in a sense sufficient conditions of solvability of Dirichlet, Dirichlet–Nicoletti and Nicoletti boundary value problems are established.

A free boundary problem that arises from the physical phenomenon of "peeling a thin tape from a domain" is treated. In this phenomenon, the movement of the tape is governed by a hyperbolic equation and is affected by the peeling front. We are interested in the behavior of the peeling front, especially, the phenomenon of self-excitation vibration. In the present paper, a mathematical model of this phenomenon is proposed. The cause of this vibration is discussed in terms of adhesion.

AbstractThe study of chaotic vibration for multidimensional PDEs due to nonlinear boundary conditions is challenging. In this paper, we mainly investigate the chaotic oscillation of a two-dimensional non-strictly hyperbolic equation due to an energy-injecting boundary condition and a distributed self-regulating boundary condition. By using the method of characteristics, we give a rigorous proof of the onset of the chaotic vibration phenomenon of the zD non-strictly hyperbolic equation. We have also found a regime of the parameters when the chaotic vibration phenomenon occurs. Numerical simulations are also provided.
