AbstractIf A is a norm closed algebra of compact operators on a Hilbert space and if its Jacobson radical J(A) consists of all quasinilpotent operators in A then A/ J(A) is commutative. The result is not valid for a general algebra of polynomially compact operators.

AbstractIn this paper, we construct the unique (up to isomorphism) extension algebra, denoted by E∞, of the Cuntz algebra 𝒪∞ by the C*-algebra of compact operators on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. We prove that two unital monomorphisms from E∞ to a unital purely infinite simple C*-algebra are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if they induce the same homomorphisms in K-theory.

AbstractLet A be a C*-algebra and K the C*-algebra of all compact operators on a countably infinite dimensional Hilbert space. In this note, we shall show that there is an isomorphism of a semigroup of equivalence classes of certain partial automorphisms of A ⊗ K onto a semigroup of equivalence classes of certain countably generated A-A-Hilbert bimodules.

The quantum mechanics of a particle moving on a pseudosphere under the action of a constant magnetic field is studied from an algebraic point of view. The magnetic group on the pseudosphere is SU(1, 1). The Hilbert space for the discrete part of the spectrum is investigated. The eigenstates of the non-compact operators (the hyperbolic magnetic translators) are constructed and shown to be expressible as continuous superpositions of coherent states. The planar limit of both the algebra and the eigenstates is analyzed. Some possible applications are briefly outlined.

Let be a fixed separable, infinite dimensional complex Hilbert space, and let () denote the algebra of all (bounded, linear) operators on . The ideal of all compact operators on will be denoted by and the canonical quotient map from () onto the Calkin algebra ()/ will be denoted by π.Some open problems in the theory of extensions of C*-algebras (cf. [1]) have recently motivated an increasing interest in the class of all operators in () whose self-commuta tor is compact.

Let H be a separable complex Hilbert space with orthonormal basis {ei: i ∈ ℕ}, let s be the unilateral shift defined by sei = ei+1 for each i and let K be the algebra of compact operators on H. The present paper classifies the involutory *-anti-automorphisms in the C*-algebra C*(sn, K) generated by K and a positive integral power sn of s. It is shown that, up to conjugacy by *-automorphisms, there are two such involutory *-antiautomorphisms when n is even and one when n is odd.

In [2] a condition, originally due to Olagunju, was given for the spectra of certain compact operators to be on the real axis of the complex plane. Here, by using conformal mappings, this result is extended to more general curves. The problem divides naturally into two cases depending on whether or not the curve under consideration passes through the origin. Discussion is confined to the prototype curves C0 and C1. The case of C0, the unit circle of centre the origin, is considered in § 3; this problem is a simple one as the spectrum is a finite set. In § 4 results are given for C1 the unit circle of centre the point 1, and some results on ideals of compact operators, given in § 2, are needed. No attempt has been made to state results in complete generality (see [2]); this paper is kept within the framework of Hilbert space, and particularly simple conditions may be given if the operators are normal.
