The quantum theory of fields with moving boundary conditions in four-dimensional space-time is studied. We consider the particular case of a scalar massless field between two infinite parallel plates moving with constant relative velocity. It is shown that this motion produces squeezed states, and creates 'particles' at the expense of the Casimir energy.

This book is an introduction to the modern methods of the general theory of relativity, tensor calculus, space time geometry, the classical theory of fields, and a variety of theoretical physics oriented topics rarely discussed at the level of the intended reader (mid-college physics major). It does so from the point of view of the so-called principle of covariance; a symmetry that underlies most of physics, including such familiar branches as Newtonian mechanics and electricity and magnetism. The book is written from a minimalist perspective, providing the reader with only the most basic of notions; just enough to be able to read, and hopefully comprehend, modern research papers on these subjects. In addition, it provides a (hopefully short) preparation for the student to be able to conduct research in a variety of topics in theoretical physics; with particular emphasis on physics in curved spacetime backgrounds. The hope is that students with a minimal mathematical background in calculus and only some introductory courses in physics may be able to study this book and benefit from it.

AbstractWe study the model theory of fields k carrying a henselian valuation with real closed residue field. We give a criteria for elementary equivalence and elementary inclusion of such fields involving the value group of a not necessarily definable valuation. This allows us to translate theories of such fields to theories of ordered abelian groups, and we study the properties of this translation. We also characterize the first-order definable convex subgroups of a given ordered abelian group and prove that the definable real valuation rings of k are in correspondence with the definable convex subgroups of the value group of a certain real valuation of k.

Liquid forms of celebration: Festivals and the Polish literary fieldThe text aims to analyze the position of literary festivals within the Polish literary field. The process described is dynamic in character (the position of particular festivals changes over time). The authors attempt to grasp this dynamic, including its determining factors and the transformations it introduces in the literary field. The methodological framework of the article is provided by the category of theory of fields, developed by Pierre Bourdieu.
