1. The art and science of music psychology

Music can seem to be the human behavior that is least susceptible to explanation, but a long history exists of applying various frameworks to try to understand it. The cognitive science of music integrates ideas from philosophy, music theory, experimental psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, and computer modeling to answer questions about music’s role in people’s lives. The art of music psychology is to bring rigorous scientific methodologies to questions about the human musical capacity while applying sophisticated humanistic approaches to framing and interpreting the science.

A dolgozat a tudat tulajdonságaiból indul ki (beszámoló képesség, élénkség, egységesség, koherencia), majd először az 1960-as években tekinti át a tudat iránt megindult érdeklődés első szakaszait, olyan jelenségekre összpontosítva, mint a verbális kondicionálás, az éberségi kontinuum, a hasítottagy-kísérletek, a tudat és a prefrontális működések kapcsolata. Azután áttekinti a mai természettudományos szemléletű tudatkutatás néhány vezető kérdését. Ilyenek a tudat neurobiológiai megfelelőinek keresése, az agykérgi helyektől (prefrontális rendszerek) a sajátos működésmódokig (gamma oszcilláció) s a tudatzavarok kérdéséig. Miközben egyre többet tudunk a tudatról, nem szabad felednünk, hogy számos kísérleti pszichológiai megfigyelés (előfeszítés, kétértelműségi aktiváció, figyelmi vakság) is arra mutat, hogy igen összetett jelenséggel van dolgunk, például szemantikai alapú viselkedéseink sem mindig hozzáférhetőek a tudatosság számára.

Why do people have conflicting views of equality concerning the distribution of income, wealth, and satisfaction of vital needs? How do people form and sometimes change their views of equality and related issues, such as gender identity? Answers to such questions can benefit from cognitive science—the interdisciplinary field that includes neuroscience and computer modeling as well as psychology. According to principles of emotional coherence, attitudes develop and change because of connections among the values attached to systems of concepts, beliefs, and goals. People attach a positive value to concepts such as equality, if the concept fits with other positive concepts such as human needs, and opposes negative concepts such as poverty. Emotional coherence balances positive and negative values to yield an overall conclusion. Computer models based on emotional coherence explain people’s differing attitudes about equality and issues such as transgender rights. They also model how people sometimes change their minds.

Objective: To provide an evaluative synthesis of the life and scientific contributions of the late Joel Warm. Background: As the doyen of vigilance research, Joel Warm expanded our understanding and horizons concerning this critical response capacity. However, he also made widespread and profound contributions to many other areas of perception and applied psychology, as we elucidate here. Method: Using archival sources, personal histories, and analysis of extant literature documenting Warm’s own productivity, we articulate his life in science. Results: Our synthesis illustrates the continued, broad, influential, and expanding impact that one individual can exert on diverse fields of study. Whole bodies of understanding of human behavior have been illuminated by his exemplary career. Application By understanding his path to success in applied experimental psychology, we anticipate that others will be motivated, inspired, and guided to replicate and even outstrip a lifetime of such seminal and influential contributions. The presence of individuals such as Warm serves as a primary motive in enhancing Humans Factors/Ergonomics Science.

AbstractA model is presented which aims to show how, for listeners familiar with a given style, aesthetic response to music may be related to its ‘structure’ (as defined in relation to ‘zygonic’ theory) and ‘content’ (the particular perceived qualities of sound that pertain to a given musical event). The model combines recent empirical findings from music psychology with other approaches adapted from music theory and philosophy. Intramusical considerations, which form the core of the model, are positioned within a broader socio-cultural, cognitive and physical context. The new framework is used to inform an analysis of Beethoven's Piano Sonata op.110, which examines in particular the notions of teleology in music and narrative metaphor.

This article argues that music psychology overlaps with a number of other disciplines, including music education, therapy, ethnomusicology, and music theory and analysis. There are tensions in each case, but benefits too for those who are prepared to explore with an open mind. Ultimately, however, music psychology cannot be extended beyond the boundaries of its epistemological box, always granted that the sides are flexible and subject to change: indeed, such movement is likely to come about through the influence of adjacent disciplines.
