All of Mercury’s three interventions in the Aeneid are engaged in a profound intertextual dialogue with Homer and Apollonius. Mercury’s first visit to Carthage (Aen. 1.297–304) echoes Athena’s intervention at Od. 13.300–2, and also the only intervention of Hermes as messenger/emissary of Zeus in the Argonautica (Arg. 3.584–8). This suggests a parallelism between Dido and Aeetes that will resurface again at Aen. 4.563–4 and 604–6. Furthermore, Jupiter’s sending of Mercury to Carthage and the god’s flight recall both Zeus’ sending of Hermes to Ogygia in the Odyssey and Aphrodite’s sending of Eros to Aea. Vergil’s fundamental model for Jupiter’s dispatch of Mercury to Aeneas (Aen. 4.219–78) is Zeus’ dispatch of Hermes to Calypso to free Odysseus at Od. 5.28–42. Finally, Mercury’s dream apparition to Aeneas (Aen. 4.553–70) is modeled on Hermes’ second visit to Priam at Il. 24.677–95.

Abstract This article investigates biblical reception in the works of two popular modern fantasy authors. It stages an intertextual dialogue between Genesis 22:1-19, “the binding of Isaac”, and two episodes, in Stephen King’s The Gunslinger and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Return of the King. After presenting the dynamics of what happens to the biblical text in these two authors and the perspectives that come out, a hermeneutical reversal is then suggested, in which the modern stories are used to probe the biblical text. One can return to the Bible with questions culled from its later reception, in this case King and Tolkien. This article argues that the themes touched upon by the two authors are important and hermeneutically relevant ones, sometimes novel and sometimes contributions to exegetical debates that have been going on for centuries.

Five processes controlling the production of soot from gaseous hydrocarbons are distinguished: gas reactions producing radical fragments on which nucleation may begin; nucleation; coagulation; growth; and oxidation. A fundamental model capable of taking into account all these processes is described. The model is applied to the conditions of a practical rocket engine, in which production of soot in the exhaust jet is governed by the rate of pyrolysis of methane in the chamber. Predictions made for these conditions agree with experimental results. The rate controlling processes and key intermediate species are identified.

Obras como To the Hermitage o White Teeth establecen los puentes críticos y temáticos que permiten a la literatura inglesa seguir siendo un espacio sincré- tico de fusión y expansión plurinacional: los personajes devienen en un lugar múltiple de infl uencias y vivencias, y se mueven en el espacio y el tiempo para crear la dialogía intertextual que marca la continuidad de la experiencia literaria inglesa.Palabras clave: Metafi cción historiográfi ca, intertextualidad, disemiNación, espacio.AbstractIn the last few years, the English novel moved from auto/biography and historiographic metafi ction towards theories dealing with a spatial history and characters that respond to the defi nition of either pilgrims or nómades. This diversifi cation of voice and place narrates intertextuality and transnational discourses, and validates the possibilities of “dissemiNation”. Novels such as Malcolm Bradbury’s To the Hermitage or Zadie Smith’s White Teeth establish the conditions that make contemporary English Literature a place for synchretic fusion and plurinational expansion: characters become a site for multiple infl uences and experiences, and they move through time and space creating the intertextual dialogue that confers continuity to the literary development in English.Key words: Historiographic metafi ction, intertextuality, dissemiNation, space.

The paper considers the demonstrative aspects of intertext in the prose by Valerii Shevchuk and focuses on the peculiarities of the works’ interaction with the Bible, mythology, and literature, which takes place at the level of different forms and types of intertext. Particular attention is paid to revealing the specifc ‘dialogue’ of V. Shevchuk’s works with their pretexts — hagiography, autobiographical and diary’s literature of Baroque. ɒ e examples discussed testify to the depth and ramifications of the intertextual dialogue in the writer’s prose, reveal the intellectual, philosophical, and elitist nature of his texts. A dialogue with the Bible, mythology, world and Ukrainian literature in the works by V. Shevchuk unfolds in the form of open and hidden quotations, allusions, reminiscences. These details aim at deepening the representation of ideas and themes, forming the subtexts, interpreting images. The writer creates a new artistic form — metatext — mainly through the reinterpretation of the pretexts, among which the works of the Baroque period (poetic, autobiographical, diary genres) and hagiography dominate. Transforming the pretexts at the level of contents, plot, genre, time and space, narrative, V. Shevchuk expands them with monologues, dialogues, descriptions, and details. In the process of interpreting prototexts, the writer resorts to modeling original images, in the context of which he actualizes some worldview points, reveals important moral, ethical, and philosophical problems. Allowing the perception of his work as a ‘textual game’, the writer, at the same time, does not reduce the role of intertext to the level of intellectual play. Intertext becomes a peculiar way of continuing the literary discourses of the past in a dialogue with them. They become re-read, ‘supplemented’ and thus brought once again into the continuous process of forming culture.
