Abstract Polarimeters play a key role in investigating solar magnetic fields. In this paper, a High speed and high efficiency Imaging POlarimeter (HIPO) is proposed based on a pair of ferroelectric liquid crystal retarders (FLCs), with the ultimate goal of measuring magnetic fields of prominences and filaments from the ground. A unique feature of the HIPO is that it enables high cadence polarization measurements covering a wide field of view (FOV); the modulation frequency of the HIPO is able to achieve ∼100 Hz, which greatly suppresses the seeing-induced crosstalk, and the maximum FOV can reach 62″ × 525″. Additionally, FLC retardances under low and high states were calibrated individually and found to have a slight discrepancy, which is neglected in most works. Based on FLC calibration results, an optimization was performed using a constrained nonlinear minimization approach to obtain the maximum polarimetric efficiency. Specifically, optimized efficiencies of the Stokes Q, U, and V are well balanced and determined as (ξQ, ξU, ξV) = (0.5957, 0.5534, 0.5777), yielding a total efficiency of 0.9974. Their practical efficiencies are measured as (ξQ′, ξU′, ξV′) = (0.5934, 0.5385, 0.5747), slightly below the optimized values but still resulting in a high total efficiency of 0.9861. The HIPO shows advantages in terms of modulation frequency and polarimetric efficiency compared with most other representative ground-based solar polarimeters. In the observations, measurement accuracy is found to be better than 2.7 × 10−3 by evaluating full Stokes Hα polarimetry results of the chromosphere. This work lays a foundation for the development of high-speed and high-accuracy polarimeters for our next-generation solar instruments.

In a known display cell with the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and interdigital electrodes on one of the glass substrates, the “In-Plane Switching” (IPS) mode is implemented, in which the NLC main optical axis reorients in a plane parallel to substrates, providing the most correct color reproduction at different angles view, up to 178 ° horizontally and vertically. Unfortunately, the creation of interdigital metal electrodes complicates and increases the technological process cost and causes a decrease in image contrast. At the same time, experimental results and calculations based on classical electro-optics of crystals indicate that electrooptical switching in the IPS mode is a natural and intrinsic feature of a conventional (with continuous electrodes) display cell with a planar-oriented layer of the ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC), in which the effect of the deformed (by the electric field) helix FLC nanostructure is realized (DHF effect). In such a cell, the reorientation of the main optical axis under the influence of a weak electric field also occurs in the substrate plane if the FLC has a small pitch (about 100 nm or less) and a large tilt angle of molecules in the layer (about 38 ° or more). The dependences of the FLC cell light transmittance measured in this work, confirmed the achievement of the IPS electro-optical mode in the DHF FLC cell; moreover, the light modulation frequency was 1 kHz. Thus, while maintaining all the advantages of the IPS mode known in NLC, its implementation in FLC allows additionally obtaining technological advantages and multiple increase in modulation frequency.

On the basis of the analysis of the free energy of a viscoelastic anisotropic layer liquid, a chiral ferroelectric liquid crystal C^∗ , located in a thin cell in a ”bookshelf“ geometry the possibility of the smectic layers periodic distortions in the external magnetic H and electric E fields applied perpendicularly and along the plates, respectively, are investigated. The polar angle θ formed by the unit vector n and the normal a to the smectic planes is fixed, and the appearing Helfrich–Yuro distortions u of the smectic layers are assumed to be small in the proposed continuum model of the liquid ferroelectrics.
