A dynamical system entrains to a periodic input if its state converges globally to an attractor with the same period. In particular, for a constant input, the state converges to a unique equilibrium point for any initial condition. We consider the problem of maximizing a weighted average of the system’s output along the periodic attractor. The gain of entrainment is the benefit achieved by using a non-constant periodic input relative to a constant input with the same time average. Such a problem amounts to optimal allocation of resources in a periodic manner. We formulate this problem as a periodic optimal control problem, which can be analysed by means of the Pontryagin maximum principle or solved numerically via powerful software packages. We then apply our framework to a class of nonlinear occupancy models that appear frequently in biological synthesis systems and other applications. We show that, perhaps surprisingly, constant inputs are optimal for various architectures. This suggests that the presence of non-constant periodic signals, which frequently appear in biological occupancy systems, is a signature of an underlying time-varying objective functional being optimized.

The article proposes an algorithm for solving a linear programming problem (LPP) based on the use of its representation in the form of an antagonistic matrix game and the subsequent solution of the game by an iterative method. The algorithm is implemented as a computer program. The rate of convergence of the estimates of the solution to the actual value with the required accuracy has been studied. The software implementation shows a high speed of obtaining the LPP solution with acceptable accuracy in fractions or units of seconds. This allows the use algorithm in embedded systems for optimal control.

Abstract In this paper, a novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) mathematical model with modified parameters is presented. This model consists of six nonlinear fractional order differential equations. Optimal control of the suggested model is the main objective of this work. Two control variables are presented in this model to minimize the population number of infected and asymptotically infected people. Necessary optimality conditions are derived. The Grünwald–Letnikov nonstandard weighted average finite difference method is constructed for simulating the proposed optimal control system. The stability of the proposed method is proved. In order to validate the theoretical results, numerical simulations and comparative studies are given.

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems are of great interest, due to their applicability in science and engineering. However, the coupling between large fluid domains and small moving solid walls presents numerous numerical difficulties and, in some configurations, where the thickness of the solid wall can be neglected, one can consider membrane models, which are derived from the Koiter shell equations with a reduction of the computational cost of the algorithm. With this assumption, the FSI simulation is reduced to the fluid equations on a moving mesh together with a Robin boundary condition that is imposed on the moving solid surface. In this manuscript, we are interested in the study of inverse FSI problems that aim to achieve an objective by changing some design parameters, such as forces, boundary conditions, or geometrical domain shapes. We study the inverse FSI membrane model by using an optimal control approach that is based on Lagrange multipliers and adjoint variables. In particular, we propose a pressure boundary optimal control with the purpose to control the solid deformation by changing the pressure on a fluid boundary. We report the results of some numerical tests for two-dimensional domains to demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of our method.

In this study, based on the policy iteration (PI) in reinforcement learning (RL), an optimal adaptive control approach is established to solve robust control problems of nonlinear systems with internal and input uncertainties. First, the robust control is converted into solving an optimal control containing a nominal or auxiliary system with a predefined performance index. It is demonstrated that the optimal control law enables the considered system globally asymptotically stable for all admissible uncertainties. Second, based on the Bellman optimality principle, the online PI algorithms are proposed to calculate robust controllers for the matched and the mismatched uncertain systems. The approximate structure of the robust control law is obtained by approximating the optimal cost function with neural network in PI algorithms. Finally, in order to illustrate the availability of the proposed algorithm and theoretical results, some numerical examples are provided.

We consider two-stage tandem queuing systems with dedicated servers in each station and flexible servers that can serve in both stations. We assume exponential service times, linear holding costs, and operating costs incurred by the servers at rates proportional to their speeds. Under conditions that ensure the optimality of nonidling policies, we show that the optimal allocation of flexible servers is determined by a transition-monotone policy. Moreover, we present conditions under which the optimal policy can be explicitly determined.

Abstract An automatic history-matching algorithm based onan optimal control approach has been formulated forjoint estimation of spatially varying permeability andporosity and coefficients of relative permeabilityfunctions in two-phase reservoirs. The algorithm usespressure and production rate data simultaneously. The performance of the algorithm for thewaterflooding of one- and two-dimensional hypotheticalreservoirs is examined, and properties associatedwith the parameter estimation problem are discussed. Introduction There has been considerable interest in thedevelopment of automatic history-matchingalgorithms. Most of the published work to date onautomatic history matching has been devoted tosingle-phase reservoirs in which the unknownparameters to be estimated are often the reservoirporosity (or storage) and absolute permeability (ortransmissibility). In the single-phase problem, theobjective function usually consists of the deviationsbetween the predicted and measured reservoirpressures at the wells. Parameter estimation, orhistory matching, in multiphase reservoirs isfundamentally more difficult than in single-phasereservoirs. The multiphase equations are nonlinear, and in addition to the porosity and absolutepermeability, the relative permeabilities of each phasemay be unknown and subject to estimation. Measurements of the relative rates of flow of oil, water, and gas at the wells also may be available forthe objective function. The aspect of the reservoir history-matchingproblem that distinguishes it from other parameterestimation problems in science and engineering is thelarge dimensionality of both the system state and theunknown parameters. As a result of this largedimensionality, computational efficiency becomes aprime consideration in the implementation of anautomatic history-matching method. In all parameterestimation methods, a trade-off exists between theamount of computation performed per iteration andthe speed of convergence of the method. Animportant saving in computing time was realized insingle-phase automatic history matching through theintroduction of optimal control theory as a methodfor calculating the gradient of the objective functionwith respect to the unknown parameters. Thistechnique currently is limited to first-order gradientmethods. First-order gradient methods generallyconverge more slowly than those of higher order.Nevertheless, the amount of computation requiredper iteration is significantly less than that requiredfor higher-order optimization methods; thus, first-order methods are attractive for automatic historymatching. The optimal control algorithm forautomatic history matching has been shown toproduce excellent results when applied to field problems. Therefore, the first approach to thedevelopment of a general automatic history-matchingalgorithm for multiphase reservoirs wouldseem to proceed through the development of anoptimal control approach for calculating the gradientof the objective function with respect to theparameters for use in a first-order method.
