A Gram-reaction-negative, rod-shaped marine bacterium, designated MEBiC08158T, was isolated from sediments collected from Taean County, Korea, near the Hebei Spirit tanker oil spill accident. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain MEBiC08158T was closely related to Alcanivorax marinus R8-12T (99.5 % similarity) but was distinguishable from other members of the genus Alcanivorax (93.7–97.1 %). The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain MEBiC08158T and A. marinus R8-12T was 58.4 %. Growth of strain MEBiC08158T was observed at 15–43 °C (optimum 37–40 °C), at pH 6.0–9.5 (optimum pH 7.0–8.0) and with 0.5–16 % NaCl (optimum 1.5–3.0 %). The dominant fatty acids were C16 : 0, C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c, C12 : 0, C18 : 1ω7c, C12 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (comprising C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c). Several phenotypic characteristics differentiate strain MEBiC08158T from phylogenetically close members of the genus Alcanivorax. Therefore, strain MEBiC08158T should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Alcanivorax, for which the name Alcanivorax gelatiniphagus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MEBiC08158T ( = KCCM 42990T = JCM 18425T).

The taxonomic position of a novel, marine, heterotrophic, aerobic, pigmented, non-motile bacterium that was isolated from a green alga, Ulva fenestrata, inhabiting the Sea of Japan, was determined. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the strain, KMM 3941T, is a member of the genus Arenibacter. The results of DNA–DNA hybridization experiments, supported by phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, showed that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Arenibacter, for which the name Arenibacter certesii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 3941T (=KCTC 12113T=CCUG 48006T).

Two novel actinobacteria isolates, designated YIM 70009T and YIM 70081T, were characterized in order to determine their taxonomic position. Cells of strains YIM 70009T and YIM 70081T were cocci, although only the latter were motile. The G+C contents of their DNAs were 64·0 and 64·5 mol%, respectively. On the basis of chemotaxonomic characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the two isolates were classified in the genus Nesterenkonia. DNA–DNA hybridization and comparison of phenotypic characteristics revealed that strains YIM 70009T and YIM 70081T differed from each other and from known species. Therefore, it is proposed that they represent two separate novel species of the genus Nesterenkonia: Nesterenkonia sandarakina sp. nov. (type strain, YIM 70009T=CCTCC AA 203007T=DSM 15664T=KCTC 19011T) and Nesterenkonia lutea sp. nov. (type strain, YIM 70081T=CCTCC AA 203010T=DSM 15666T=KCTC 19013T).

Three bacterial strains, designated MT1T, RW10T and IpA-2T, had been isolated previously for their ability to degrade chlorosalicylates or isopimaric acid. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated that these bacteria are related to species of the genus Pseudomonas. Analysis of the results of DNA–DNA hybridization with several close phylogenetic neighbours revealed a low level of hybridization (less than 57 %). On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA relatedness data and chemotaxonomic analysis, it is concluded that these isolates represent separate novel species, for which the names Pseudomonas reinekei sp. nov. (type strain MT1T =DSM 18361T=CCUG 53116T), Pseudomonas moorei sp. nov. (type strain RW10T =DSM 12647T=CCUG 53114T) and Pseudomonas mohnii sp. nov. (type strain IpA-2T =DSM 18327T=CCUG 53115T) are proposed.

The taxonomic position of strain JCM 2765T isolated from fermented cane molasses in Thailand was reinvestigated. Strain JCM 2765T was originally identified as representing Lactobacillus buchneri on the basis of biochemical and physiological characteristics. In the present study, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain JCM 2765T demonstrated a low level of similarity with the type strain of L. buchneri (92.5 %) and high levels with those of Lactobacillus collinoides (97.6 %) and Lactobacillus paracollinoides (98.0 %). Ribotyping was applied to investigate the relationships between strain JCM 2765T, L. collinoides and L. paracollinoides. The dendrogram based on ribotyping patterns showed one cluster for six strains of L. paracollinoides, and that strain JCM 2765T and L. collinoides JCM 1123T were each independent. Based on additional phenotypic findings and DNA–DNA hybridization results, strain JCM 2765T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus similis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JCM 2765T (=LMG 23904T).

A novel Gram-staining-positive, rod-shaped bacterium, designated DCY100T, was isolated from rhizome of mountain ginseng root in Hwacheon mountain, Gangwon province, Republic of Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain DCY100T belonged to the genus Microbacterium and was most closely related to Microbacterium ginsengisoli KCTC 19189T (97.9 %), Microbacterium lacus JCM 15575T (97.2 %) and Microbacterium invictum DSM 19600T (97.1 %). The major menaquinones were MK-11 and MK-12. The major polar lipids were found to be diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and one unidentified glycolipid. The major fatty acids (>10.0 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained the amino acids ornithine, alanine, glutamic acid and glycine; whole-cell sugars consisted of glucose, galactose, rhamnose and ribose. The DNA G+C content was 63.6 ± 0.7 mol%. The DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain DCY100T and Microbacterium ginsengisoli KCTC 19189T, Microbacterium lacus JCM 15575T and Microbacterium invictum DSM 19600T were 36.2 ± 0.4, 22.0 ± 3.0 and 15.3 ± 1.8 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic analyses, the isolate is classified as a representative of a novel species in the genus Microbacterium, for which the name Microbacterium rhizomatis DCY100T is proposed. The type strain is DCY100T ( = KCTC 39529T = JCM 30598T).

An endospore-forming strain, 20CMT, was isolated from Antarctic sediment and identified as a member of the genus Paenibacillus on the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses. The organism stained Gram-variable and was facultatively anaerobic. Strain 20CMT was psychrotolerant, growing optimally at 10–15 °C. Like other Paenibacillus species, it contained anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acid. The DNA G+C content was 40·7 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed strain 20CMT within the Paenibacillus cluster, with a similarity value of 99·5 % to Paenibacillus macquariensis DSM 2T. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments between the Antarctic isolate and P. macquariensis DSM 2T revealed a reassociation value of 47 %, indicating that strain 20CMT and P. macquariensis DSM 2T belong to different species. Based on evaluation of morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, a novel species, Paenibacillus antarcticus sp. nov., is proposed; the type strain is 20CMT (=LMG 22078T=CECT 5836T).

A novel, psychrotolerant, facultative anaerobe, strain FTR1T, was isolated from Pleistocene ice from the permafrost tunnel in Fox, Alaska. Gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped cells were observed with sizes 0·6–0·7×0·9–1·5 μm. Growth occurred within the pH range 6·5–9·5 with optimum growth at pH 7·3–7·5. The temperature range for growth of the novel isolate was 0–28 °C and optimum growth occurred at 24 °C. The novel isolate does not require NaCl; growth was observed between 0 and 5 % NaCl with optimum growth at 0·5 % (w/v). The novel isolate was a catalase-negative chemoorganoheterotroph that used as substrates sugars and some products of proteolysis. The metabolic end products were acetate, ethanol and CO2. Strain FTR1T was sensitive to ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, rifampicin, kanamycin and gentamicin. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed 99·8 % similarity between strain FTR1T and Carnobacterium alterfunditum, but DNA–DNA hybridization between them demonstrated 39±1·5 % relatedness. On the basis of genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, it is proposed that strain FTR1T (=ATCC BAA-754T=JCM 12174T=CIP 108033T) be assigned to the novel species Carnobacterium pleistocenium sp. nov.

A Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain DCY01T, was isolated from soil from a ginseng field in South Korea and was characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain DCY01T belonged to the Gammaproteobacteria and was most closely related to Stenotrophomonas koreensis KCTC 12211T (98.4 % similarity), Stenotrophomonas humi R-32729T (97.2 %), Stenotrophomonas terrae R-32768 (97.1 %), Stenotrophomonas maltophilia DSM 50170T (96.9 %) and Stenotrophomonas nitritireducens DSM 12575T (96.8 %). Chemotaxonomic analyses revealed that strain DCY01T possessed a quinone system with Q-8 as the predominant compound, and iso-C15 : 0 (28.2 %), C16 : 0 10-methyl (13.2 %), iso-C15 : 1 F (10.8 %) and C15 : 0 (7.5 %) as major fatty acids, corroborating assignment of strain DCY01T to the genus Stenotrophomonas. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The results of DNA–DNA hybridization and physiological and biochemical tests clearly demonstrated that strain DCY01T represents a species distinct from recognized Stenotrophomonas species. Based on these data, DCY01T (=KCTC 12539T=NBRC 101154T) should be classified as the type strain of a novel species of the genus Stenotrophomonas, for which the name Stenotrophomonas ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed.

A salt- and alkali-tolerant actinomycete strain, YIM 90018T, was isolated from a saline and alkaline soil sample collected from Qinghai, China. Aerial hyphae of strain YIM 90018T were only produced on YIM 82 agar. Vegetative hyphae were well developed and did not fragment. Straight or flexuous (rectiflexibiles) spore chains were produced. The isolate grew well with 25 % (w/v) MgCl2 . 6H2O and at pH 10. All of these characters indicated that strain YIM 90018T belonged to the genus Streptomyces. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, DNA–DNA hybridization and phenotypic characteristics, strain YIM 90018T could be differentiated from all recognized species of the genus Streptomyces. A novel species, Streptomyces sparsus sp. nov., is proposed, with strain YIM 90018T ( = CCTCC AA204019T = DSM 41858T) as the type strain.

A novel, Gram-positive, rod-shaped, motile, endospore-forming, halophilic bacterial strain, J18T, was isolated from a traditional salt-fermented seafood made of gizzard shad in Korea. Colonies were convex, cream-coloured and 1.0–2.0 mm in diameter after incubation for 3 days on marine agar. Growth occurred at pH 7.0–11.0 (optimum, pH 10.0), at 4–40 °C (optimum, 37 °C) and in the presence of 0–30 % NaCl (optimum, 9–10 %). On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain J18T was related most closely to Virgibacillus byunsanensis ISL-24T (96.3 % similarity), Virgibacillus carmonensis LMG 20964T (96.2 %), Virgibacillus halodenitrificans DSM 10037T (96.0 %), Virgibacillus arcticus Hal 1T (95.5 %) and Virgibacillus necropolis LMG 19488T (95.5 %). The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strain J18T was 37.0 mol%. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the meso-diaminopimelic acid type. The major quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain J18T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Virgibacillus, for which the name Virgibacillus alimentarius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is J18T ( = KACC 14624T  = JCM 16994T).
