A cholesterol side-chain-cleaving bacterial strain, AD-6T, was isolated from fresh faeces of a clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) and was studied using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the novel strain formed a distinct subline within the genus Gordonia, its closest neighbours being the type strains of Gordonia cholesterolivorans, Gordonia sihwensis and Gordonia hydrophobica, with sequence similarity values of 98.2, 97.8 and 97.6 %, respectively. The gyrB gene sequence of strain AD-6T exhibited similarities of 77–91 % with those of the type strains of recognized species of the genus Gordonia, being most similar to the type strains of G. sihwensis, G. hydrophobica and Gordonia hirsuta (91, 87 and 84 % similarity, respectively). The results of whole-cell fatty acid analyses and DNA–DNA relatedness data readily distinguished the new isolate from its nearest neighbours. Strain AD-6T is therefore considered to represent a novel species of the genus Gordonia, for which the name Gordonia neofelifaecis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AD-6T (=NRRL B-59395T=CCTCC AB-209144T).

A novel bacterial strain, designated ZLT, isolated from a warm spring in Jhonglun, Taiwan, was characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The novel strain had chemotaxonomic and morphological properties consistent with its classification in the genus Paenibacillus. Cells were Gram-variable, aerobic, sporulating, motile rods. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated that this novel isolate was unique, showing 94.3 % sequence similarity to Paenibacillus assamensis GPTSA 11T and lower levels to Paenibacillus timonensis 2301032T (94.0 %), Paenibacillus macerans ATCC 8244T (93.3 %), Paenibacillus barengoltzii SAFN-016T (93.3 %) and Paenibacillus sanguinis 2301083T (93.2 %). The novel isolate could be distinguished from the type strains of all of these species based on a range of phenotypic data. The major cellular phospholipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and one unknown phosphoglycolipid. The predominant isoprenologue was an unsaturated menaquinone with seven isoprene units (MK-7). The major fatty acids of strain ZLT were C16 : 0 (33.5 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (32.5 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (9.3 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 49.2 mol%. It is evident from the genotypic and phenotypic data that strain ZLT should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus fonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ZLT (=BCRC 17579T=LMG 23577T).

A novel betaproteobacterium, designated strain Ch07T, was isolated from granules from the wastewater-treatment bioreactor of an alcohol fermentation factory in South Korea. In order to determine its taxonomic position, the novel strain was characterized using a polyphasic approach. The new strain was Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming, motile and short rod-shaped. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain Ch07T belonged to the class Betaproteobacteria, being related to Pusillimonas noertemannii BN9T (gene sequence similarity 97.30 %), Achromobacter xylosoxidans subsp. xylosoxidans DSM 10346T (97.09 %), Bordetella pertussis DSM 5571T (97.01 %), Pigmentiphaga kullae DSM 13608T (96.68 %) and Castellaniella defragrans DSM 1214T (96.47 %). The results of DNA–DNA hybridization tests showed that reassociation values were less than 62 % with respect to these closely related type strains. Chemotaxonomic data showed that strain Ch07T possessed ubiquinone Q-8. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67.9±0.1 mol%. The major polyamine of strain Ch07T was putrescine. The major polar lipids of strain Ch07T were phosphatidylethanolamine, followed by diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. When strain Ch07T was incubated on tryptic soy agar, the major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/iso C15 : 0 2-OH) and summed feature 5 (C18 : 1 ω7c/ω9t/ω12t). The results of DNA–DNA hybridizations, in combination with the chemotaxonomic and physiological data, demonstrated that strain Ch07T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Parapusillimonas granuli gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is Ch07T (=KCTC 12668T=LMG 24012T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain JM-1396T) producing a yellow pigment, was isolated from the healthy internal stem tissue of post-harvest cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, cultivar ‘DES-119’) grown at the Plant Breeding Unit at the E. V. Smith Research Center in Tallassee (Macon county), AL, USA. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain JM-1396T showed high sequence similarity values to the type strains of Novosphingobium mathurense, Novosphingobium panipatense (both 98.6 %) and Novosphingobium barchaimii (98.5 %); sequence similarities to all other type strains of species of the genus Novosphingobium were below 98.3 %. DNA–DNA pairing experiments of the DNA of strain JM-1396T and N. mathurense SM117T, N. panipatense SM16T and N. barchaimii DSM 25411T showed low relatedness values of 8 % (reciprocal 7 %), 24 % (reciprocal 26 %) and 19 % (reciprocal 25 %), respectively. Ubiquinone Q-10 was detected as the dominant quinone; the fatty acids C18 : 1ω7c (71.0 %) and the typical 2-hydroxy fatty acid, C14 : 0 2-OH (11.7 %), were detected as typical components. The polar lipid profile contained the diagnostic lipids diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid and phosphatidylcholine. The polyamine pattern contained the major compound spermidine and only minor amounts of other polyamines. All these data revealed that strain JM-1396T represents a novel species of the genus Novosphingobium. For this reason we propose the name Novosphingobium gossypii sp. nov. with the type strain JM-1396T ( = LMG 28605T = CCM 8569T = CIP 110884T).

A novel bacterial strain, designated THG-PC7T, was isolated from fallow farmland soil in Yongin, South Korea. Cells of strain THG-PC7T were Gram-stain-negative, dark yellow, aerobic, rod-shaped and had gliding motility. Strain THG-PC7T grew optimally at 25–35 °C, at pH 7 and in the absence of NaCl. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis identified strain THG-PC7T as belonging to the genus Lysobacter, exhibiting highest sequence similarity with Lysobacter ximonensis KCTC 22336T (98.7 %) followed by Lysobacter niastensis KACC 11588T (95.7 %). In DNA–DNA hybridization tests, DNA relatedness between strain THG-PC7T and its closest phylogenetic neighbour L. ximonensis was below 25 %. The DNA G+C content of the novel isolate was determined to be 62.5 mol%. Flexirubin-type pigments were found to be present. The major cellular fatty acids were determined to be iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1ω9c. The major respiratory quinone was identified as ubiquonone-8 (Q8). The predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified aminophospolipid. On the basis of results from DNA–DNA hybridization and the polyphasic data, strain THG-PC7T represents a novel species of the genus Lysobacter, for which the name Lysobacter novalis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is THG-PC7T( = KACC 18276T = CCTCC AB 2014319T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, halophilic, neutrophilic, rod-shaped, non-pigmented, polar-flagellated bacterium, UST010306-043T, was isolated from a pearl-oyster culture pond in Sanya, Hainan Province, China in January 2001. This marine bacterium had an optimum temperature for growth of between 33 and 37 °C. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the strain was closely related to Marinomonas aquimarina and Marinomonas communis, with 97.5–97.7 and 97.1 % sequence similarity, respectively. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness to the type strains of these species were well below 70 %. Analyses of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxomonic characteristics showed that strain UST010306-043T was distinct from currently established Marinomonas species. A novel species with the name Marinomonas ostreistagni sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate this bacterium, with strain UST010306-043T (=JCM 13672T=NRRL B-41433T) as the type strain.

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium, strain CAU 9038T, was isolated from a tidal-flat sediment of DaeYiJac Island, Republic of Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol, the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the dominant cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 51.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the strain belonged to the genus Paenibacillus, with <96.1 % sequence similarity to type strains of Paenibacillus species with validly published names. The most closely related type strains to CAU 9038T were Paenibacillus thailandensis S3-4AT (96.1 % similarity) and Paenibacillus agaridevorans DSM 1355T (95.3 %). The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data clearly indicated that strain CAU 9038T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus chungangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9038T (=KCTC 13717T =CCUG 59129T).

Three Gram-positive-staining strains isolated from fermented stinky tofu brine were rod-shaped, non-motile, asporogenous, facultatively anaerobic, heterofermentative and did not exhibit catalase activity. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA, rpoA and pheS gene sequences demonstrated that the novel strains were members of the genus Lactobacillus. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, the type strains of Lactobacillus collinoides (98.6 %), Lactobacillus paracollinoides (98.6 %) and Lactobacillus similis (99.6 %) were the closest neighbours. However, DNA–DNA reassociation values with these strains were less than 10 %. The phenotypic and genotypic features demonstrated that these isolates represent a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus odoratitofui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIT 11304T (=JCM 15043T =BCRC 17810T =DSM 19909T).

A novel bacterium, designated strain H3-R18T, was isolated from seashore sand collected from Homi cape, Pohang city, Korea. Cells were Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, cream-coloured, mesophilic and slightly halotolerant. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the organism was a member of the genus Pseudomonas, but the sequence showed ⩽96.3 % sequence similarity to that of the type strains of all recognized Pseudomonas species. Highest sequence similarities were to Pseudomonas brenneri CFML 97-391T (96.3 %) and Pseudomonas migulae CIP 105470T (96.3 %). The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 and C16 : 0, with lesser amounts of C12 : 0, C12 : 0 3-OH, C18 : 1ω7c and C14 : 0. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-9. The DNA G+C content was 64.0 mol%. The phylogenetic, phenotypic and genetic properties of strain H3-R18T suggest that it represents a novel species, for which the name Pseudomonas pohangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H3-R18T (=KACC 11517T=DSM 17875T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain BX5-10T) was isolated from the soil of a ginseng field on Baekdu Mountain in Jilin district, China. The taxonomic position of this bacterium was determined in an investigation based on a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain BX5-10T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and to be most closely related to Nocardioides plantarum NCIMB 12834T (96.5 % sequence similarity), Nocardioides dokdonensis KCTC 19309T (96.2 %) and Nocardioides fonticola NAA-13T (95.1 %). Strain BX5-10T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in its cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c as its major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70.3 mol%. The novel strain could be differentiated genotypically and phenotypically from all recognized species of the genus Nocardioides. Based on the results of the phylogenetic analyses and the genotypic and phenotypic data, a novel species, Nocardioides ginsengagri sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BX5-10T ( = KCTC 19467T = DSM 21362T).

A soil isolate, strain CC-AB07T, was characterized using a polyphasic approach. This organism had chemotaxonomic and morphological properties consistent with its classification in the genus Gordonia. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the novel strain formed a monophyletic branch at the periphery of the evolutionary radiation occupied by the genus Gordonia, its closest neighbours being the type strains of Gordonia alkanivorans, Gordonia amicalis, Gordonia bronchialis, Gordonia desulfuricans, Gordonia polyisoprenivorans and Gordonia rhizosphera. The novel isolate was distinguished from all of these type strains using a range of phenotypic properties and by gyrB gene sequence analysis. It was evident from the genotypic and phenotypic data that strain CC-AB07T should be classified as representing a novel species in the genus Gordonia, for which the name Gordonia soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-AB07T (=BCRC 16810T=DSM 44995T).
