A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain BX5-10T) was isolated from the soil of a ginseng field on Baekdu Mountain in Jilin district, China. The taxonomic position of this bacterium was determined in an investigation based on a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain BX5-10T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and to be most closely related to Nocardioides plantarum NCIMB 12834T (96.5 % sequence similarity), Nocardioides dokdonensis KCTC 19309T (96.2 %) and Nocardioides fonticola NAA-13T (95.1 %). Strain BX5-10T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in its cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c as its major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70.3 mol%. The novel strain could be differentiated genotypically and phenotypically from all recognized species of the genus Nocardioides. Based on the results of the phylogenetic analyses and the genotypic and phenotypic data, a novel species, Nocardioides ginsengagri sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BX5-10T ( = KCTC 19467T = DSM 21362T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium, strain CAU 9038T, was isolated from a tidal-flat sediment of DaeYiJac Island, Republic of Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol, the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the dominant cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 51.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the strain belonged to the genus Paenibacillus, with <96.1 % sequence similarity to type strains of Paenibacillus species with validly published names. The most closely related type strains to CAU 9038T were Paenibacillus thailandensis S3-4AT (96.1 % similarity) and Paenibacillus agaridevorans DSM 1355T (95.3 %). The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data clearly indicated that strain CAU 9038T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus chungangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9038T (=KCTC 13717T =CCUG 59129T).

An obligately aerobic, spherical, non-motile, pale-yellow pigmented bacterium was isolated from a piece of leaf of seagrass, Enhalus acoroides (L.f.) Royle, grown in Okinawa, Japan and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the novel isolate N5FB36-5T shared approximately 96–98 % sequence similarity with the species of the genus Pelagicoccus of the family Puniceicoccaceae within the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’. The DNA–DNA relatedness values of strain N5FB36-5T with Pelagicoccus mobilis 02PA-Ca-133T and Pelagicoccus albus YM14-201T were below 70 %, which is accepted as the phylogenetic definition of a novel species. β-Lactam antibiotic susceptibility test and amino acid analysis of the cell wall hydrolysates indicated the absence of muramic acid and diaminopimelic acid in the cell walls, which suggested that this strain lacks an ordinary Gram-negative type of peptidoglycan in the cell wall. The DNA G+C content of strain N5FB36-5T was 51.6 mol%; MK-7 was the major menaquinone; and the presence of C16 : 0, C16 : 1 ω7c and anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acids supported the identification of the novel isolate as a member of the genus Pelagicoccus. On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic data, it was concluded that this strain should be classified as a novel species of the genus Pelagicoccus, for which the name Pelagicoccus croceus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is N5FB36-5T (=MBIC08282T=KCTC 12903T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, aerobic, coccus- to rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain UKS-03T) was isolated from a sediment sample of Ungok Lake in Gochang, Republic of Korea. The taxonomic position of this bacterium was determined in an investigation based on a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain UKS-03T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and to be related most closely to Nocardioides ginsengisegetis Gsoil 485T (98.5 % similarity), Nocardioides koreensis MSL-09T (98.4 %) and ‘Nocardioides panaciterrulae’ Gsoil 958 (97.3 %). Strain UKS-03T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in its cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol as the main polar lipids, and iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and C17 : 0 10-methyl as its major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.9 mol%. Mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain UKS-03T and N. ginsengisegetis Gsoil 485T, N. koreensis KCTC 19272T and ‘N. panaciterrulae’ Gsoil 958 were 37.5 ± 7.2, 6.8 ± 0.9 and 3.1 ± 0.7 %, respectively. On the basis of the data from this polyphasic taxonomic study, strain UKS-03T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides ungokensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is UKS-03T ( = KACC 18304T = LMG 28591T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterium (strain JS-08T) isolated from seawater was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain JS-08T belongs to the genus Myroides, a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes. Its closest phylogenetic relative was Myroides odoratimimus JCM 7460T, with which it shared 97.0 % 16S RNA gene sequence similarity. Strain JS-08T contained menaquinone-6 (MK-6) as the predominant menaquinone, and the dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and a summed feature consisting of iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c. The DNA G+C content of strain JS-08T was 34.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic evidence, it is suggested that strain JS-08T represents a novel species of the genus Myroides, for which the name Myroides marinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JS-08T ( = KCTC 23023T  = JCM 16529T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, motile, non-spore-forming coccus-shaped actinomycete, designated strain YIM 121300T, was isolated from alkaline sediment in Yuanjiang, Yunnan province, south-west China. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain YIM 121300T was affiliated to the genus Kineococcus, and was closely related to Kineococcus aurantiacus IFO 15268T (97.3 % similarity). 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to other species of the genus Kineococcus was < 97 %. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The whole-cell sugars contained arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose and ribose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H2). Mycolic acids were not detected. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside and an unknown phospholipid. The predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 1 A. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 75.1 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness (55 ± 4 % to K. aurantiacus IFO 15268T) and differential phenotypic data demonstrated that strain YIM 121300T was distinguished from all related species of the genus Kineococcus. On the basis of data from the present polyphasic study, the organism should be assigned to a novel species of the genus Kineococcus, for which the name Kineococcus gypseus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 121300T ( = CCTCC AA 2013232T = DSM 27627T).

Two marine, heterotrophic, aerobic, pigmented and gliding bacteria, isolated from the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius were subjected to a polyphasic taxonomy study. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strains KMM 6032T and KMM 6047 formed a distinct branch within the genus Arenibacter, a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae. The level of sequence similarity between the novel isolates and members of the genus Arenibacter was 94.5–98.9 %. The DNA G+C content was 39–40 mol%. The dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1, iso-C15 : 0, C15 : 0, C15 : 1 ω6c, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c). The results of DNA–DNA hybridization experiments supported by phenotypic data indicated that the isolates represent a novel species within the genus Arenibacter, for which the name Arenibacter echinorum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 6032T (=KCTC 22013T=LMG 22574T).

A strictly aerobic, Gram-negative, gliding, dull-orange-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain Shu-F-UV2-2T, was isolated from sediment (Carp Island, Republic of Palau) and was the focus of a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the novel isolate was affiliated to the family ‘Flammeovirgaceae’ of the phylum Bacteroidetes and that it showed highest sequence similarity (85.5 %) to Flammeovirga yaeyamensis NBRC 100898T. The novel isolate could be differentiated phenotypically and physiologically from recognized members of the family ‘Flammeovirgaceae’. The G+C content of the DNA was 43.0 mol%, MK-7 was the major menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 1 ω5c were the major fatty acids. On the basis of this polyphasic evidence, it was concluded that strain Shu-F-UV2-2T represents a novel species in a new genus of the family ‘Flammeovirgaceae’, for which the name Perexilibacter aurantiacus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Shu-F-UV2-2T (=MBIC06993T=IAM 15413T=KCTC 12867T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, coccus-shaped, non-endospore-forming bacterium (Gsoil 633T) was isolated from soil from a ginseng field in Pocheon province in South Korea. The novel isolate was characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, strain Gsoil 633T was shown to belong to the family Propionibacteriaceae. The closest phylogenetic relative was Microlunatus phosphovorus DSM 19555T, with 96.1 % sequence similarity; the sequence similarity to other members of the family was less than 95.4 %. The isolate was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-9(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 69.8 mol%. The morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of the isolate were consistent with those of M. phosphovorus, but the results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed the phenotypic differentiation of strain Gsoil 633T from this species. Therefore, strain Gsoil 633T represents a novel species, for which the name Microlunatus ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 633T (=KCTC 13940T=DSM 17942T).

A bacterial strain designated 11N27T was isolated from an agricultural soil sample. Cells of this strain were Gram-reaction-variable, facultatively anaerobic, endospore-forming, white-pigmented, peritrichously flagellated and hydrolysed xanthine. The major fatty acids of strain 11N27T were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two unknown phospholipids, two unknown aminolipids, one unknown aminophospholipid and two unknown polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain 11N27T was 50.3 mol%. MK-7 was the predominant respiratory quinone. meso-Diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain 11N27T was phylogenetically related to Paenibacillus mendelii C/2T (96.2  % sequence similarity) and Paenibacillus sepulcri CMM 7311T (96.0  %). The genotypic and phenotypic data showed that strain 11N27T could be distinguished from phylogenetically related species and that this strain represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus. The name Paenibacillus xanthinilyticus sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain 11N27T( = KACC 17935T = NBRC 109108T).

Strain R2A43-10T was isolated from a greenhouse soil in Korea. Cells were Gram-negative rods, motile by means of a single flagellum. Growth occurred at 10–40 °C and at pH 5–8. Ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) was the only respiratory lipoquinone. Major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and C16 : 0. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain R2A43-10T was closely related to Chitinimonas taiwanensis cfT (sequence similarity of 94.8 %), but it exhibited low sequence similarities (<92 %) to other members of the Betaproteobacteria. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain R2A43-10T was 65.0 mol%. The novel isolate could be differentiated from C. taiwanensis cfT by several physiological properties. On the basis of genomic and phenotypic data, it is concluded that R2A43-10T (=KACC 11467T=DSM 17726T) is the type strain of a novel species of the genus Chitinimonas, for which the name Chitinimonas koreensis sp. nov. is proposed.
