Three novel halotolerant, hydrogenotrophic methanogens, designated strains K1F9705bT, K1F9705c and O1F9704a, were isolated from an estuary in Eriln Shi, Taiwan, and from a nearby marine water aquaculture fishpond. These isolates were irregular cocci that stained Gram-negative. Strains K1F9705bT and K1F9705c were non-motile, but strain O1F9704a was weakly motile with flagella. They were able to use formate and H2/CO2 to form methane, but they could not catabolize acetate, methanol, trimethylamine or secondary alcohols. Acetate was required for cell growth. Tungsten greatly stimulated the growth of strains K1F9705bT and K1F9705c, but did not affect the growth of strain O1F9704a. Optimal pH and temperature for growth of these three isolates were respectively 7·2 and 37 °C. Optimal NaCl concentration for growth was 0·5 % for strain O1F9704a and 1·0 % for strains K1F9705c and K1F9705bT. Moreover, all strains grew well at up to 8–12 % NaCl. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that these isolates are members of the genus Methanocalculus, but are distinct from Methanocalculus taiwanensis, Methanocalculus pumilus and Methanocalculus halotolerans, with sequence similarities of 98·4, 98·3 and 98·2 %, respectively. In addition, strain K1F9705bT possessed 85, 80, 37, 29 and 10 % DNA–DNA relatedness to strain K1F9705c, strain O1F9704a, M. pumilus, M. halotolerans and M. taiwanensis, respectively. Analysis of protein profiles and the M r of surface (S)-layer glycoprotein subunits showed that these three new isolates are closely related to, but distinct from, known Methanocalculus species. A novel species, Methanocalculus chunghsingensis sp. nov., is proposed for strains K1F9705bT, K1F9705c and O1F9704a. The type strain is K1F9705bT (=OCM 772T=DSM 14646T).

Three novel endophytic strains, designated 17B10-2-12T, 26C10-4-4 and D13-10-4-9, were isolated from the bark of Populus euramericana in Heze, Shandong Province, China. They were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, non-motile, short-rod-shaped, oxidase-positive and catalase-negative. A phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that the three novel strains clustered with members of the family Comamonadaceae and formed a distinct branch. The isolates shared 100 % similarities among themselves and had the highest sequence similarity with Xenophilus azovorans DSM 13620T (95.2 %) and Xenophilus arseniciresistens YW8T (95.0 %), and less than 95.0 % sequence similarities with members of other species. Their major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo, C18 : 1ω7c and C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and three unknown aminophospholipids. The predominant quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The DNA G+C content was 69.5–70.0 mol%. Based on data from a polyphasic taxonomy study, the three strains represent a novel species of a novel genus of the family Comamonadaceae, for which the name Corticibacter populi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 17B10-2-12T ( = CFCC 12099T = KCTC 42091T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile Brevundimonas-like bacterial strain, J22T, was isolated from black sand collected from Soesoggak, Jeju Island, Korea. Growth of strain J22T was observed in R2A medium at temperatures between 10 and 42 °C (optimum 30 °C), between pH 6.5 and 10.5 (optimum pH 7.5) and at a NaCl concentration between 0 and 4 % (w/v) (optimum 0–1 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain J22T belonged to the genus Brevundimonas, with high sequence similarities of >97 % to the sequence of the type strains Brevundimonas alba CB88T, Brevundimonas lenta DS-18T, Brevundimonas variabilis CB17T, Mycoplana bullata TK0051T, Brevundimonas kwangchunensis KSL-102T, Brevundimonas intermedia CB63T, Brevundimonas subvibrioides CB81T and Brevundimonas bacteroides CB7T. Strain J22T exhibited DNA–DNA relatedness values of less than 22.2 % with the phylogenetically related species of the genus Brevundimonas. The DNA G+C content of strain J22T was 66.3 mol%. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c, C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω9c; C12 : 0 3-OH was present, which chemotaxonomically characterizes the members of the genus Brevundimonas. Phylogenetic, genomic and biochemical characteristics served to differentiate this isolate from recognized members of the genus Brevundimonas. Strain J22T (=KCTC 22177T=JCM 15911T) should be classified as a novel species in the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas basaltis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, facultatively aerobic, beige and slender bacterium, designed N1Y132T, was isolated from a sediment sample taken from coastal zone of Weihai, China (37°34′31.44″ N, 122°9′15″ E). Growth occurred at 15-33°C (optimal 25–28°C), at pH 6.5–8.5 (optimal pH 7.5), in 0–9% (w/v) NaCl (optimal 2.0–2.5%). According to the phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain N1Y132T showed the highest sequence similarity (97.9%) with Carboxylicivirga taeanensis JCM 19490T, followed by C. sediminis JR1T (97.4%), C. mesophila JCM 18290T (96.4%) and C. linearis FB218T (95.1%). Thus, strain N1Y132T was a member of the genus Carboxylicivirga. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strain N1Y132T and C. sediminis JR1T, C. linearis FB218T and C. mesophila JCM 18290T were 74.8%, 71.1%, and 74.9%, respectively. Chemotaxonomic analysis showed that the sole respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the major fatty acids (> 5.0%) included iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15:0, iso-C13:0, iso-C14:0, iso-C15:0 3-OH, and C15:1ω6c. The polar lipids were consisted of a phosphatidylethanolamine, two phosphoaminolipids and six unidentified lipids. The DNA G + C content was 38.1 mol%. Based on the evidence presented in this study, strain N1Y132T represents a novel species of the genus Carboxylicivirga, for which the name Carboxylicivirga marinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is N1Y132T (= KCTC 72934T = MCCC 1H00431T).

In the early 1980s, a facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, short rod, designated 202T, was isolated from a chicken crop and identified as a homofermentative lactic acid bacterium. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain was affiliated with the genus Lactobacillus, clustering within the Lactobacillus acidophilus–delbrueckii group. In this analysis, strain 202T appeared to be most closely related to the type strains of Lactobacillus intestinalis and Lactobacillus amylolyticus, with gene sequence similarities of 96.1 and 96.2 %, respectively. Strain 202T was found to differ from these two species, however, when investigated by multilocus sequence analysis, and it also differed in terms of some of its metabolic properties. On the basis of these observations, strain 202T is considered to represent a novel species in the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus gigeriorum sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 202T ( = CRBIP 24.85T = DSM 23908T).

A Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, cream-coloured bacterial strain, UM2T, was isolated from an open hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) dump site at Ummari village in Lucknow, India. Data generated from a polyphasic approach including phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses confirmed that strain UM2T belonged to the genus Sphingomonas. The highest similarity found to the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain UM2T was 99.4 %, with Sphingomonas wittichii DSM 6014T, whereas the DNA–DNA relatedness value between these strains was 31 %, indicating that they represent separate species. The DNA G+C content of UM2T was 66.9 mol%. The respiratory pigment ubiquinone Q-10 was present. The predominant fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω6c and/or C18 : 1 ω7c; 32.9 %), C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (15.5 %) and C16 : 0 (12.1 %). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine. sym-Homospermidine was the major polyamine observed. On the basis of the data reported, it was concluded that UM2T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas histidinilytica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is UM2T (=MTCC 9473T =CCM 7545T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated, non-gliding and rod-shaped bacterial strain, SSK2-2T, was isolated from the place where the ocean and a freshwater spring meet at Jeju island, South Korea. Strain SSK2-2T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 2.0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. The neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SSK2-2T fell within the clade comprising the type strains of species of the genus Maribacter, joining the type strain of Maribacter sedimenticola with which it shared 99.4 % similarity. Sequence similarities to the type strains of other Maribacter species were 94.6–98.2 %. Strain SSK2-2T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16 : 0) as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain SSK2-2T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain SSK2-2T was 38.2 mol% and mean levels of DNA–DNA relatedness with the type strains of four phylogenetically related species of the genus Maribacter were 11–24 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain SSK2-2T is separate from other Maribacter species. On the basis of the data presented, strain SSK2-2T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacter confluentis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SSK2-2T ( = KCTC 42604T = CECT 8869T).

In order to clarify the taxonomic position of an actinobacterium from the Roman catacomb of Domitilla, a combination of phenotypic characterization, phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence and DNA–DNA relatedness studies was used. The results from the polyphasic taxonomic study of this organism showed that strain HKI 0342T (=DSM 16849T=NCIMB 14033T) should be considered as the type strain of a novel species of the genus Isoptericola, for which the name Isoptericola hypogeus sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel xylan-degrading bacterium, YT-1101T, was isolated from fresh water. The isolate was a Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, motile, endospore-forming and rod-shaped bacterium. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain YT-1101T belonged to the genus Cohnella, sharing sequence similarities of less than 94 % with the type species. The genomic G+C content was 58.6 mol%. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. On the basis of morphological, physiological and phylogenetic properties, strain YT-1101T represents a novel species of the genus Cohnella, for which the name Cohnella fontinalis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YT-1101T (=NBRC 104957T =DSM 21753T).

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).

Abstract A Gram-stain-negative, gliding-motile, positive for catalase, facultative anaerobic, designated strain XSD401T, was isolated from the red algae of Xiaoshi Island, Shandong Province, China. Growth occurred at 20–37 °C (optimum, 33 °C), pH 5.5–9.5 (optimum, pH 6.5–7.5), and with 0.5–5% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3%). The main fatty acids are iso-C15:0, iso-C15:1 G, iso-C17:0 3-OH, iso-C15:0 3-OH, C16:0. Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), three unidentified aminolipids (AL1, AL2, AL3) and one unidentified lipid (L) were the major polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 33.9 mol%. Strain XSD401T had the highest sequence similarity (96.88%) to the 16S rRNA gene of Psychroserpens damuponensis KCTC 23539T. The similarities with Psychroserpens burtonensis DSM 12212T was 96.31%. The dDDH values between strain XSD401T and P. damuponensis KCTC 23539T, P. burtonensis DSM 12212T, were 20.40% and 20.30%, respectively. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strain XSD401T and P. damuponensis KCTC 23539T, P. burtonensis DSM 12212T were 76.91%, 76.88%, respectively. The differences in morphology, physiology and genotype from the previously described taxa support the classification of strain XSD401T as a representative of a novel species of the genus Psychroserpens, for which the name Psychroserpens luteus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XSD401T (= MCCC 1H00396T = KCTC 72684T = JCM 33931T).
