A novel halophilic, filamentous, actinomycete strain, designated CXB832T, was isolated from a salt pond in Qingdao, China. Optimal growth occurred at 37 °C, pH 7.0–8.0 and 9–12 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain CXB832T formed pale yellow to deep yellow branched substrate mycelium without fragmentation. Abundant white aerial mycelium differentiated into long chains of spores and the spores were rod-shaped with smooth surfaces. Strain CXB832T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid of the cell-wall peptidoglycan, and glucose and xylose as the major whole-cell sugars. The phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phospholipids, glycolipid and unidentified lipids. MK-10(H8), MK-9(H8), MK-10(H2) and MK-10(H6) were the predominant menaquinones. The major fatty acids were i-C16 : 0 (30.71 %), ai-C17 : 0 (13.31 %) and C16 : 0 (11.28 %). The G+C content of the DNA was 60.1 mol%. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel strain was most closely related to genera within the family Nocardiopsaceae , but formed a separate lineage. The highest sequence similarities were to Nocardiopsis arabia DSM 45083T (95.4 %) and Haloactinospora alba DSM 45015T (94.9 %). On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain CXB832T represents a new genus and novel species in the family Nocardiopsaceae , for which the name Salinactinospora qingdaonensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is CXB832T ( = DSM 45442T = LMG 25567T).

Eight facultatively anaerobic rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from raw milk and two other dairy products. Results of phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolates are placed in a distinct lineage within the family Propionibacteriaceae with Propioniciclava sinopodophylli and Propioniciclava tarda as the closest relatives (94.6 and 93.5 % similarity, respectively). The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, alanine and glutamic acid and was of the A1γ type (meso-DAP-direct). The major cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0 and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidyglycerol and three unidentified glycolipids. The quinone system contained predominantly menaquinone MK-9(H4). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain VG341T was 67.7 mol%. The whole-cell sugar pattern contained ribose, rhamnose, arabinose and galactose. On the basis of phenotypic and genetic data, eight strains (VG341T, WS4684, WS4769, WS 4882, WS4883, WS4901, WS4902 and WS4904) are proposed to be classified as members of a novel species in a new genus of the family Propionibacteriaceae , for which the name Brevilactibacter flavus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is VG341T (=WS4900T=DSM 100885T=LMG 29089T) and seven additional strains are WS4684, WS4769, WS4882, WS4883, WS4901, WS4902 and WS4904. Furthermore, we propose the reclassification of P. sinopodophylli as Brevilactibacter sinopodophylli comb. nov.

A novel filamentous actinomycete strain, designated TRM 46004T, was isolated from sediment of Aiding Lake in Tulufan Basin (42° 64′ N 89° 26′ E), north-west China. The isolate was characterized using a polyphasic approach. The isolate formed abundant aerial mycelium with few branches and vegetative mycelium, occasionally twisted and coiled; spherical sporangia containing one to several spherical spores developed at the ends of short sporangiophores on aerial mycelium. The G+C content of the DNA was 65.2 mol%. The isolate contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and xylose, galactose and ribose as the major whole-cell sugars. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H10). The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TRM 46004T formed a distinct lineage within the family Pseudonocardiaceae and showed 91.7–96.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with members of the family Pseudonocardiaceae . On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, a novel genus and species, Longimycelium tulufanense gen. nov., sp. nov., are proposed. The type strain of Longimycelium tulufanense is TRM 46004T ( = CGMCC 4.5737T = NBRC 107726T).

Daqu is a fermentation starter used in the production of Chinese liquors. A thermophilic bacterium, designated strain H-18T, was isolated from a high-temperature Daqu sample collected from the manufacturing process of a sesame-flavoured liquor in Shandong province, China. It was investigated in a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. Strain H-18T formed white aerial mycelium and greyish-yellow substrate mycelium, bearing single endospores on aerial and substrate hyphae or on unbranched short sporophores. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. These chemotaxonomic properties are similar to those of members of the genus Thermoactinomyces . The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 49.1 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons indicated that strain H-18T was most closely related to Thermoactinomyces vulgaris KCTC 9076T (96.42 % similarity), Thermoactinomyces intermedius KCTC 9646T (96.06 %), Laceyella putida KCTC 3666T (96.32 %) and Laceyella sacchari KCTC 9790T (95.55 %). Strain H-18T showed low DNA–DNA relatedness (40.8, 33.4, 20.0 and 14.4 %) with the above strains. Based on morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, DNA–DNA hybridization data and physiological properties, strain H-18T represents a novel species of the genus Thermoactinomyces , for which the name Thermoactinomyces daqus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H-18T ( = DSM 45914T = CICC 10681T).

A novel thermophilic actinomycete, designated AG2-7T, was isolated from mushroom residue compost in Guangxi University, Nanning, China. The strain grew optimally at 45–60 °C, at pH 7.0 and with 0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Vegetative mycelia were branched and whitish to pale yellow without fragmentation. Aerial mycelium was abundant, whitish and differentiated into long chains of spores, with a membranous structure or tunica partially covering the surface of aerial hyphae. The non-motile spores were oval in shape with a ridged surface. Strain AG-27T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, and the whole-cell sugars were galactose and ribose. Major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 (27.51 %), iso-C17 : 0 (10.47 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (12.01 %). MK-9(H4) was the predominant menaquinone. The polar phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, ninhydrin-positive glycophospholipid, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, an unknown phospholipid and unknown glucosamine-containing phospholipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 63.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the organism belonged to the family Pseudonocardiaceae , suborder Pseudonocardineae and showed more than 5 % divergence from other members of the family. Based on the phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain AG2-7T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Pseudonocardiaceae , for which the name Thermotunica guangxiensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is AG2-7T ( = ATCC BAA-2499T = CGMCC 4.7099T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated IPBSL-7T, was isolated from a drilling core 297 m deep obtained from the Iberian Pyrite Belt. The strain was isolated anaerobically using nitrate as the electron acceptor. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that it was related to Tessaracoccus flavescens SST-39T (95.7 % similarity), Tessaracoccus bendigoensis Ben 106T (95.7 %), Tessaracoccus lubricantis KSS-17SeT (95.6 %) and Tessaracoccus oleiagri SL014B-20A1T (95.0 %), while its similarity to any other member of the family Propionibacteriaceae was less than 94 %. Cells were non-motile, non-spore-forming, Gram-positive, oval to rod-shaped, and often appeared in pairs or small groups. The strain was facultatively anaerobic, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and capable of reducing nitrate. Colonies were circular, convex, smooth and colourless. The organism could grow at between 15 and 40 °C, with an optimal growth at 37 °C. The pH range for growth was from pH 6 to 9, with pH 8 being the optimal value. Strain IPBSL-7T had peptidoglycan type A3-γ′, with ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino-acid and glycine at position 1 of the peptide subunit. The dominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4) (93.8 %). The major cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0 (55.0 %). The DNA G+C content was 70.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic results, strain IPBSL-7T can be differentiated from previously described species of the genus Tessaracoccus and, therefore, represents a novel species, for which the name Tessaracoccus lapidicaptus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IPBSL-7T ( = CECT 8385T = DSM 27266T).

During a bioprospection of bacteria with antimicrobial activity, the actinomycete strain A38T was isolated from a sediment sample of the Carpintero river located in the Gran Piedra Mountains, Santiago de Cuba province (Cuba). This strain was identified as a member of the genus Micromonospora by means of a polyphasic taxonomy study. Strain A38T was an aerobic Gram-positive filamentous bacterium that produced single spores in a well-developed vegetative mycelium. An aerial mycelium was absent. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and the whole-cell sugars were glucose, mannose, ribose and xylose. The major cellular fatty acids were isoC15:0, 10 methyl C17:0, anteiso-C17:0 and iso-C17:0. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H4) and MK-10(H6). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that this strain was closely related to Micromonospora tulbaghiae DSM 45142T (99.5 %), Micromonospora citrea DSM 43903T (99.4 %), Micromonospora marina DSM 45555T (99.4 %), Micromonospora maritima DSM 45782T (99.3 %), Micromonospora sediminicola DSM 45794T (99.3 %), Micromonospora aurantiaca DSM 43813T (99.2 %) and Micromonospora chaiyaphumensis DSM 45246T (99.2 %). The results of OrthoANIu analysis showed the highest similarity to Micromonospora chalcea DSM 43026T (96.4 %). However, the 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequence-based phylogeny and phenotypic characteristics provided support to distinguish strain A38T as a novel species. On the basis of the results presented here, we propose to classify strain A38T (=LMG 30467T=CECT 30034T) as the type strain of the novel species Micromonospora fluminis sp. nov.

The taxonomic position of a novel actinomycete isolate, designated strain GGCR-6T, isolated from the healthy leaves of Xanthium sibiricum collected from the botanic garden of Hunan University of Science and Technology in Hunan province, PR China, was determined by a polyphasic approach. GGCR-6T grew well on ISP series media and formed well-developed, branched substrate hyphae and aerial mycelium that differentiated into straight spore chains consisting of cylindrical spores with smooth surfaces. The diagnostic diamino acid was ll-diaminopimelic acid. The major menaquinones were MK-9(H8), MK-9(H2), MK-9 and MK-9(H6). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphotidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. The predominant fatty acids were C16 : 1ω9c, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0. The phenotypic characteristics of GGCR-6T indicated that it represented a member of the genus Streptomyces . Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that GGCR-6T was most closely related to Streptomyces cyaneus NRRL B2296T and Streptomyces griseoruber NRRL B1818T. However, the digital DNA–DNA hybridization, the average nucleotide identity and the multi locus sequence analysis evolutionary distance clearly separate GGCR-6T from the phylogenetically closely related species. Furthermore, the novel isolate was distinctly differentiated from S. cyaneus NRRL B2296T and S. griseoruber NRRL B1818T by morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. Based on these data, strain GGCR-6T should be designated as a representative of a novel species of the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces aquilus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain GGCR-6T (=CICC 11055T=JCM 33584T).

Strain Llam7T was isolated from microbial mat samples from the hypersaline lake Salar de Llamará, located in Taracapá region in the hyper-arid core of the Atacama Desert (Chile). Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic traits were studied. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences assigned the strain to the family Micromonosporaceae with affiliation to the genera Micromonospora and Salinispora . Major fatty acids were C17 : 1ω8c, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The cell walls contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and ll-2,6 diaminopimelic acid (ll-DAP), while major whole-cell sugars were glucose, mannose, xylose and ribose. The major menaquinones were MK-9(H4) and MK-9(H6). As polar lipids phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and several unidentified lipids, i.e. two glycolipids, one aminolipid, three phospholipids, one aminoglycolipid and one phosphoglycolipid, were detected. Genome sequencing revealed a genome size of 6.894 Mb and a DNA G+C content of 71.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses with complete genome sequences positioned strain Llam7T within the family Micromonosporaceae forming a distinct cluster with Micromonospora (former Xiangella ) phaseoli DSM 45730T. This cluster is related to Micromonospora pelagivivens KJ-029T, Micromonospora craterilacus NA12T, and Micromonospora craniellae LHW63014T as well as to all members of the former genera Verrucosispora and Jishengella , which were re-classified as members of the genus Micromonospora , forming a clade distinct from the genus Salinispora . Pairwise whole genome average nucleotide identity (ANI) values, digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) values, the presence of the diamino acid ll-DAP, and the composition of whole sugars and polar lipids indicate that Llam7T represents a novel species, for which the name Micromonospora tarapacensis sp. nov. is proposed, with Llam7T (=DSM 109510T,=LMG 31023T) as the type strain.

A Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain xj7T, was isolated from roots of Typha angustifolia L. growing in Beijing Cuihu Wetland, China. The isolate was identified as a member of the genus Paenibacillus based on phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic inference. The novel strain was spore-forming, motile, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Optimal growth of strain xj7T occurred at 28–30 °C and pH 7.0–7.5. Diphosphatidylglycerol was the most abundant polar lipid and occurred along with phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown phospholipid and three unknown aminophospholipids. The diamino acid found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The major fatty acid components were anteiso-C15 : 0 (56.1 %), iso-C16 : 0 (9.1 %), C16 : 0 (8.0 %), iso-C14 : 0 (6.3 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (5.1 %). The G+C content of genomic DNA was 47.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain xj7T fell within the evolutionary radiation encompassed by the genus Paenibacillus , its closest neighbours were Paenibacillus borealis KK19T (97.5 %) and Paenibacillus durus DSM 1735T (97.1 %). However, the DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain xj7T and P. borealis KK19T and between strain xj7T and P. durus DSM 1735T, were both 35 %. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic properties, strain xj7T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus , for which the name Paenibacillus typhae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is xj7T ( = CGMCC 1.11012T = DSM 25190T).

The Gram-stain-negative, orange-pigmented, non-spore-forming, non-motile, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated TP-CH-4T, was isolated from a seamount near the Yap Trench in the tropical western Pacific. The optimal growth conditions were determined to be at pH 7–8, 25–30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, two unidentified phospholipids and three unidentified polar lipids. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 1 (composed of C13 : 03-OH and/or iso-C15 : 1H). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain TP-CH-4T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae and formed a distinct lineage. Strain TP-CH-4T displayed highest sequence similarities to Pseudozobellia thermophila KMM 3531T (95.1 %) and Flagellimonas flava A11T (93.9 %). Genome sequencing revealed the strain TP-CH-4T has a genome size of 4.5 Mbp and a G+C content of 44.5 mol%. Collectively, based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genomic evidence, strain TP-CH-4T represents a novel species of a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Pelagihabitans pacificus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Pelagihabitans pacificus is TP-CH-4T (=CGMCC 1.17120T=KCTC 72434T).
