A thermophilic, aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, filamentous bacterium, strain PRI-4131T, was isolated from an intertidal hot spring in Isafjardardjup, NW Iceland. The strain grew chemo-organotrophically on various carbohydrates. The temperature range for growth was 40–65 °C (optimum 55 °C), the pH range was pH 6.5–9.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and the NaCl range was 0–3 % (w/v) (optimum 0.5 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain PRI-4131T represented a distinct lineage within the class Caldilineae of the phylum Chloroflexi. The highest levels of sequence similarity, about 91 %, were with Caldilinea aerophila STL-6-O1T and Caldilinea tarbellica D1-25-10-4T. Fermentative growth was not observed for strain PRI-4131T, which, in addition to other characteristics, distinguished it from the two Caldilinea species. Owing to both phylogenetic and phenotypic differences from the described members of the class Caldilineae , we propose to accommodate strain PRI-4131T in a novel species in a new genus, Litorilinea aerophila gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Litorilinea aerophila is PRI-4131T ( = DSM 25763T  = ATCC BAA-2444T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated and designated strain L6-8T during a study of endophytic bacterial communities in lesser duckweed (Lemna aequinoctialis). Cells of strain L6-8T were motile with peritrichous flagella. The analysis of the nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain L6-8T was phylogenetically related to species of the genus Rhizobium . Its closest relatives were Rhizobium borbori DN316T (97.6 %), Rhizobium oryzae Alt 505T (97.3 %) and Rhizobium pseudoryzae J3-A127T (97.0 %). The sequence similarity analysis of housekeeping genes recA, glnII, atpD and gyrB showed low levels of sequence similarity (<91.5 %) between strain L6-8T and other species of the genus Rhizobium with validly published names. The pH range for growth was 4.0–9.0 (optimum 6.0–7.0), and the temperature range for growth was 20–45 °C (optimum 30 °C). Strain L6-8T tolerated NaCl up to 2 % (w/v) (optimum 1 % NaCl). The predominant components of cellular fatty acids were C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (31.32 %), summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c; 25.39 %) and C16 : 0 (12.03 %). The DNA G+C content of strain L6-8T was 60.4 mol% (T m). nodC and nifH were not amplified in strain L6-8T. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain L6-8T and R. borbori DN316T, R. oryzae Alt505T and R. pseudoryzae J3-A127T was between 11.2 and 18.3 %. Based on the sequence similarity analyses, phenotypic, biochemical and physiological characteristics and DNA–DNA hybridization, strain L6-8T could be readily distinguished from its closest relatives and represents a novel species of the genus Rhizobium , for which the name Rhizobium paknamense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L6-8T ( = NBRC 109338T = BCC 55142T).

A strictly anaerobic, moderately thermophilic, halotolerant rod, designated BELH25T, was isolated from a water sample of a Tunisian hot spring. Cells were non-motile, 2–6 µm long and 0.4–0.6 µm wide, appearing singly or in pairs. The isolate grew at 45–70 °C (optimum 55 °C), at pH 6.2–8.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and with 0–4 % NaCl (optimum 0–2.0 %). Sulfate, thiosulfate, elemental sulfur, sulfite, nitrate and nitrite were not used as terminal electron acceptors. Strain BELH25T used cellobiose, fructose, galactose, glucose, maltose, mannose, sucrose, starch and yeast extract as electron donors. The main fermentation products from glucose metabolism were formate, acetate, ethanol and CO2. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 37.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain BELH25T was most closely related to Caloramator viterbiensis JW/MS-VS5T and Fervidicella metallireducens AeBT (92.2 and 92.1 % sequence similarity, respectively), and the isolate was positioned approximately equidistantly between these genera. Based on phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain BELH25T is proposed to be a member of a novel species of a novel genus within the order Clostridiales , family Clostridiaceae , for which the name Fonticella tunisiensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is BELH25T ( = DSM 24455T = JCM 17559T).

Two actinomycete strains, KK1-2T and CPB4-7, were isolated from marine sediments collected in Chumphon province, Thailand. Chumphon province, Thailand. Their taxonomic positions were determined using a polyphasic approach. The morphological, cultural and chemotaxonomic characteristics of these isolates were consistent with the classification of the strains as representing a member of the genus Streptomyces . They contained ll-diaminopimelic acid in their cell wall peptidoglycan; the whole-cell sugars were ribose and glucose. The predominant menaquinones were MK9-(H6) and MK9-(H8). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies, these isolates were determined to be closely related to Streptomyces xinghaiensis JCM 16958T (98.2 %), Streptomyces rimosus subsp. paromomycinus JCM 4541T (98.1 %), Streptomyces sclerotialus JCM 4828T (98.1 %) and Streptomyces flocculus JCM 4476T (98.0 %). The G+C contents of the genomic DNA of strains KK1-2T and CPB4-7 were 73.3 and 74.2 mol%, respectively. They could be clearly distinguished from the related type strains by a low DNA–DNA relatedness and phenotypic differences. On the basis of these results, these strains represent a novel species of the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces chumphonensis sp. nov. (type strain KK1-2T = JCM 18522T = TISTR 2106T = PCU 330T) is proposed.

Two Gram-positive, moderately thermophilic, endospore-forming, rod-shaped, motile bacteria, designated PDF25T and PDF30, were isolated from Karakoc hot spring in the province of Izmir, Turkey, and were characterized in order to determine their phylogenetic positions. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the two strains belonged to the genus Brevibacillus ; strain PDF25T showed highest sequence similarity to strain PDF30 (99.4 %) and Brevibacillus thermoruber DSM 7064T (98.5 %). The major fatty acids of strain PDF25T were iso-C15 : 0 (39.30 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (26.10 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (14.75 %). Polar lipid analysis revealed diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and a variety of unidentified aminophospholipids, phospholipids and aminolipids. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 56.09 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments revealed 58 % relatedness between strain PDF25T and B. thermoruber DSM 7064T. Based on these data, the two strains are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Brevibacillus , for which the name Brevibacillus aydinogluensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PDF25T ( = DSM 24395T = LMG 26289T).

Seven Gram-negative bacterial strains were isolated from oozing bark canker of poplar (Populus×euramericana) trees in Hungary. They showed high (>98.3 %) 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Lonsdalea quercina ; however, they differed from this species in several phenotypic characteristics. Multilocus sequence analysis based on three housekeeping genes (gyrB, atpD and infB) revealed, and DNA–DNA hybridization analysis confirmed, that this group of bacterial strains forms a distinct lineage within the species Lonsdalea quercina . A detailed study of phenotypic and physiological characteristics confirmed the separation of isolates from poplars from other subspecies of L. quercina ; therefore, a novel subspecies, Lonsdalea quercina subsp. populi, type strain NY060T ( = DSM 25466T = NCAIM B 02483T), is proposed.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-endospore-forming, non-pigmented, rod-shaped, slightly halophilic bacterium, designated GBPy5T, was isolated from aquatic plants of the Gomishan wetland, Iran. Cells of strain GBPy5T were motile. Growth occurred with between 1 and 10 % (w/v) NaCl and the isolate grew optimally with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. The optimum pH and temperature for growth of the strain were pH 8.0 and 30 °C, respectively, while it was able to grow over a pH range of 6.5–9.0 and a temperature range of 4–35 °C. Phylogenetic analysis, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, revealed that strain GBPy5T is a member of the genus Pseudomonas forming a monophyletic branch. The novel strain exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95.4 % with type strains of Pseudomonas guariconensis PCAVU11T and Pseudomonas sabulinigri J64T, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were C18 : 1ω7c (37.8 %), C16 : 0 (14.9 %), C16 : 1ω7c (12.9 %), C12 : 0 3-OH (7.1 %) and C12 : 0 (7.0 %). The polar lipid pattern of strain GBPy5T comprised phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and one phospholipid. Ubiquinone 9 (Q-9) was the predominant lipoquinone. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain GBPy5T was 59.2 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain GBPY5T represents a novel species of the genus Pseudomonas , for which the name Pseudomonas salegens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GBPy5T ( = IBRC-M 10762T = CECT 8338T).

A newly isolated facultatively methylotrophic bacterium (strain 3tT) was investigated. Cells of the isolate were Gram-stain-negative, asporogenous, non-motile rods that multiplied by binary fission. The strain utilized methanol, methylamine and a variety of multicarbon compounds as carbon and energy sources. Growth occurred at pH 6.5–8.5 (optimally at 7.0–7.5) and at 10–45 °C (optimally at 30–37 °C). The major fatty acids of methanol-grown cells were C16 : 1ω7c and C16 : 0. The predominant phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The major ubiquinone was Q-8. Strain 3tT possessed pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ)-linked methanol dehydrogenase and assimilated C1 units at the level of formaldehyde and CO2 via the serine cycle. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 63.6 mol% (T m). On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (98.1 %) and rather low DNA–DNA relatedness (30 %) with the type strain of the type species of the genus Methyloversatilis ( Methyloversatilis universalis FAM5T), and physiological and biochemical characteristics, the isolate was classified as a representative of a new species of the genus and named Methyloversatilis thermotolerans 3tT ( = VKM B-2692T = CCUG 61694T = DSM 25156T).

A slightly thermophilic bacterial strain, designated AT-A2T, was isolated from a hot spring water sample taken from the Antun hot spring in Taiwan and characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Cells of strain AT-A2T were aerobic, Gram-negative, motile by a single polar flagellum and formed non-pigmented colonies. Growth occurred at 35–60 °C (optimum, 55 °C), with 0–1.0 % NaCl (optimum, 0.2 %) and at pH 7.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain AT-A2T belonged to the genus Tepidimonas and its closest neighbour was Tepidimonas thermarum AA-1T with a sequence similarity of 97.5 %. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0 (40.2 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 20.1 %) and C17 : 0 cyclo (11.5 %). The major respiratory quinone was Q-8. The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an uncharacterized aminolipid and several uncharacterized phospholipids. The DNA G+C content of strain AT-A2T was 70.1 mol%. The mean level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain AT-A2T and Tepidimonas thermarum AA-1T was 23.9 %. On the basis of the phylogenetic and phenotypic data, strain AT-A2T should be classified as representing a novel species, for which the name Tepidimonas fonticaldi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AT-A2T ( = LMG 26746T = KCTC 23862T = BCRC 80391T).

An aerobic, motile, moderately thermophilic rod, designated strain CLWT, was isolated from a terrestrial hot spring in an exposition garden in Xiamen City, Fujian Province, the People’s Republic of China. Strain CLWT formed beige, dry colonies on solid 2216E medium and flocks in liquid medium. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, short rods (1.0–3.0 µm long and 0.4–0.6 µm wide) with six or more polar flagella. The temperature and pH for growth of strain CLWT were 28–65 °C (optimum, 50–58 °C) and pH 5.5–9.5 (optimum, pH 6.0–8.0). Growth occurred in the presence of 0.3–6.0 % NaCl (optimum 2.5–4.5 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the closest relative of the isolate was Amaricoccus kaplicensis Ben 101T (94.3 % sequence similarity). The DNA G+C content of strain CLWT was 72.2 mol%. The respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 10. The predominant polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were summed feature 8 (consisting of C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c), C18 : 1ω7c 11-methyl and C18 : 0. Based on phylogenetic, physiological and biochemical data and DNA G+C content, strain CLWT is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which the name Pleomorphobacterium xiamenense gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is CLWT ( = LMG 26245T = CGMCC 1.10808T = MCCC 1A06272T).

An anaerobic, moderately thermophilic, terminal-spore-forming bacterium, designated strain USBA AT, was isolated from a terrestrial hot spring located at an altitude of 2683 m in the Andean region of Colombia (04° 50′ 14.0″ N 75° 32′ 53.4″ W). Cells of strain USBA AT were Gram-stain-positive, straight to slightly curved rods (0.9×2.5 µm), that were arranged singly or in pairs, and were motile by means of flagella. Growth occurred at 37–55 °C and pH 6.0–8.0, with a doubling time of 2 h under the optimal conditions (50 °C and pH 7.0). Glucose fermentation in strain USBA AT required yeast extract or peptone (each at 0.2 %, w/v). The novel strain fermented sugars, amino acids, Casamino acids, propanol, propionate, starch and dextrin, but no growth was observed on galactose, lactose, xylose, histidine, serine, threonine, benzoate, butyrate, lactate, pyruvate, succinate, methanol, ethanol, glycerol, casein, gelatin or xylan. The end products of glucose fermentation were formate, acetate, ethanol and lactate. Strain USBA AT did not grow autotrophically (with CO2 as carbon source and H2 as electron donor) and did not reduce thiosulfate, sulfate, elemental sulfur, sulfite, vanadium (V) or Fe (III) citrate. Growth of strain USBA AT was inhibited by ampicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, penicillin and streptomycin (each at 10 µg ml−1). The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 and the genomic DNA G+C content was 32.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain USBA AT belonged in the phylum Firmicutes and that its closest relative was Caloramator viterbiensis JW/MS-VS5T (95.0 % sequence similarity). A DNA–DNA relatedness value of only 30 % was recorded in hybridization experiments between strain USBA AT and Caloramator viterbiensis DSM 13723T. Based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence and the results of the DNA–DNA hybridization experiments, strain USBA AT represents a novel species of the genus Caloramator , for which the name Caloramator quimbayensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is USBA AT ( = CMPUJ U833T  = DSM 22093T).
