A Gram-stain-positive, novel actinobacterium, designated strain JL-6T, was isolated from the litter of a bamboo (Sasa borealis) forest in Damyang, Korea. Strain JL-6T had white‐grey, smooth, cylindrical spores that were borne in straight, long spore-chains. The novel strain grew aerobically at 15–28 °C (optimum, 28 °C), pH 4.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 5.5) and with 0–1.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained ll-diaminopimelic acid, glutamic acid, alanine and glycine. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8). Whole-cell hydrolysates mainly contained glucose and ribose. Phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylcholine were the diagnostic phospholipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JL-6T belonged to the genus Streptomyces with sequence similarities ranging from 97.3 % to 98.3 %. However, DNA–DNA hybridization between JL-6T and the closest related strain, Streptomyces turgidiscabies , ATCC 700248T and other closely related species in the genus Streptomyces showed <50 % relatedness. Based on these observations, strain JL-6T is proposed to represent a novel species of the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces graminilatus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JL-6T ( = KACC 16470T = NBRC 108882T).

A Gram-stain-positive, short rod-shaped and motile, mildly halotolerant, endospore-forming bacterium, FJAT-13985T, was isolated from the internal tissues of Mesona chinensis root. Strain FJAT-13985T grew at 20–45 °C (optimum 30 °C) and pH 5.7–9.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl [optimum 1 % (w/v)]. The strain was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The cell wall of strain FJAT-13985T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and the predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 (97.4 %). The major fatty acids of the strain were anteiso-C15 : 0 (23.3 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (40.8 %). The DNA G+C content was 41.64 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain FJAT-13985T is a member of the genus Bacillus and is most closely related to Bacillus drentensis DSM 15600T (98.4 %), Bacillus vireti DSM 15602T (98.2 %) and Bacillus novalis DSM 15603T (98.3 %). DNA–DNA hybridization indicated that relatedness between strain FJAT-13985T and its closest relative, B. drentensis DSM 15600T, was 36.63 %. The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic properties clearly indicate that strain FJAT-13985T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus , for which the name Bacillus mesonae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-13985T ( = DSM 25968T = CGMCC1.12238T).

Two novel strains, T9T and T10, were isolated from water samples collected from Chishui River flowing through Maotai town, Guizhou, south-west China. The isolates were yellow-pigmented, Gram-reaction-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile and aerobic. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolates belonged to the genus Flavobacterium , and showed highest similarities to Flavobacterium hibernum DSM 12611T (97.0 %), followed by Flavobacterium granuli Kw05T (96.7 %) and Flavobacterium pectinovorum DSM 6368T (96.7 %). The novel strains were able to grow at 20–37 °C (optimum 25 °C), pH 7.0–10.0 (optimum pH 7.0–8.0) and with 0–0.5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0.5 %). The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c, anteiso-C15 : 0, C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1ω10c, and menaquinone-6 (MK-6) was the main respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown glycolipid, two unknown aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C contents of strains T9T and T10 were 37.7 and 36.4 mol%, respectively. According to the phenotypic and genetic data, strains T9T and T10 represent a novel species in the genus Flavobacterium , for which the name Flavobacterium maotaiense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is T9T ( = CGMCC 1.12712T = JCM 19927T).

A yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated LL01T, was isolated from hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH)-contaminated soil at Spolana Neratovice, a former Czech producer of lindane. A neighbour-joining tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain LL01T occupied a distinct phylogenetic position in the Sphingobium cluster, showing highest similarity to Sphingobium rhizovicinum CC-FH12-1T (98.5 %). The DNA G+C content of strain LL01T was 66.1 mol%. The predominant respiratory pigment was ubiquinone Q-10. The polar lipid profile of strain LL01T also corresponded to those reported for other Sphingobium species (phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipids), supporting its identification as a member of the genus Sphingobium . Spermidine was the major polyamine observed. The results obtained from DNA–DNA hybridization and biochemical and physiological tests clearly distinguished strain LL01T from closely related species of the genus Sphingobium . Therefore, strain LL01T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingobium , for which the name Sphingobium czechense sp. nov. is proposed (type strain LL01T = CCM 7979T = DSM 25410T).

A taxonomic study was carried out on strain YN3T, which was isolated from a seaweed sample taken from the coast of Weihai, China. The bacterium was Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, and could grow at pH 5.0–10.0 and 4–32 °C in the presence of 0–9.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain YN3T was positive for the hydrolysis of polysaccharides, such as agar, starch and xylan. The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8. The major fatty acids were C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c. The main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine, and two unidentified glycolipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 49.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YN3T should be assigned to the genus Gilvimarinus . ‘Gilvimarinus agarilyticus’ KCTC 23325 and Gilvimarinus chinensis QM42T had the closest phylogenetic relationship to strain YN3T, and showed 97.9 % and 95.8 % sequence similarities, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data and DNA–DNA hybridization studies, we propose that strain YN3T represents a novel species of the genus Gilvimarinus , for which the name Gilvimarinus polysaccharolyticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YN3T ( = KCTC 32438T = JCM 19198T). An emended description of the genus Gilvimarinus is also presented.

A novel anaerobic, Fe(III)-reducing, hydrogenogenic, carboxydotrophic bacterium, designated strain Ug1T, was isolated from a volcanic acidic hot spring in southern Kyushu Island, Japan. Cells of the isolate were rod-shaped (1.0–3.0 µm long) and motile due to peritrichous flagella. Strain Ug1T grew chemolithoautotrophically on CO (100 % in the gas phase) with reduction of ferric citrate, amorphous iron (III) oxide, 9,10-anthraquinone 2,6-disulfonate, thiosulfate or elemental sulfur. No carboxydotrophic growth occurred with sulfate, sulfite, nitrate or fumarate as electron acceptor. During growth on CO, H2 and CO2 were produced. Growth occurred on molecular hydrogen as an energy source and carbon dioxide as a sole carbon source. Growth was observed on various organic compounds under an N2 atmosphere with the reduction of ferric iron. The temperature range for carboxydotrophic growth was 50–70 °C, with an optimum at 65 °C. The pH25 °C range for growth was 4.6–8.6, with an optimum between 6.0 and 6.5. The doubling time under optimum conditions using CO with ferric citrate was 1.5 h. The DNA G+C content was 42.2 mol%. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that this strain belongs to the thermophilic carboxydotrophic bacterial genus Carboxydothermus , with sequence similarities of 94.1–96.6 % to members of this genus. The isolate can be distinguished from other members of the genus Carboxydothermus by its ability to grow with elemental sulfur or thiosulfate coupled to CO oxidation. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis and unique physiological features, the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Carboxydothermus for which the name Carboxydothermus pertinax sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain of the novel species is Ug1T ( = DSM 23698T = NBRC 107576T).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, non-motile bacterium, designated strain SJ5-8T, was isolated from seau-jeot (shrimp jeotgal), a traditional fermented seafood in South Korea. Cells were non-spore-forming rods showing catalase- and oxidase-positive reactions. Growth of strain SJ5-8T was observed at 10–37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.5–8.5) and in the presence of 0–14 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 5 %). Phylogenetic inference based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain formed a tight phyletic lineage with members of the genus Brevibacterium . Strain SJ5-8T was most closely related to Brevibacterium yomogidense MN-6-aT, Brevibacterium daeguense 2C6-41T and Brevibacterium salitolerans TRM 415T with similarities of 98.9, 97.5 and 97.4 %, respectively. The DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain SJ5-8T and the type strains of B. yomogidense , B. daeguense and B. salitolerans were 51.7±1.9 %, 22.2±4.0 % and 52.4±3.8 %, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data (major sole isoprenoid quinone, MK-8(H2); major diagnostic diamino acid, meso-diaminopimelic acid; major polyamines, putrescine and cadaverine; major cellular fatty acids, anteiso-C15:0, iso-C15:0 and anteiso-C17:0; major polar lipids, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol; DNA G+C content, 69.3 mol%) also supported the affiliation of strain SJ5-8T to the genus Brevibacterium . Therefore, strain SJ5-8T represents a novel species of the genus Brevibacterium , for which the name Brevibacterium jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SJ5-8T ( = KACC 16911T = JCM 18571T).

A novel lactic acid-producing, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-negative and rod-shaped strain, designated as strain C06_No.73T, was isolated from a traditional Japanese fermented beverage called kôso. According to the results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain C06_No.73T belongs to the genus Lentilactobacillus . The closest type strain was Lentilactobacillus curieae CCTCC M 2011381T, with a sequence identity of 98.1 %. The identity values with other strains were all below 97 %. The isolate propagated under the conditions of 18–39 °C (optimum, 27 °C for 48 h incubation) and pH 4.0–7.0 (optimum, pH 6.5). The G+C content of its genomic DNA was determined to be 37.9 mol%. The main fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω7c, C18 : 1 ω9c and C19 : 0 cyclopropane 11,12. The major polar lipid was identified as phosphatidylglycerol. No isoprenoid quinone was detected. The predominant cell-wall amino acids were lysine, alanine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid. Neither meso-diaminopimelic acid nor ornithine were detected. On the basis of this polyphasic taxonomic study, the isolate is concluded to represent a novel species, for which the name Lentilactobacillus kosonis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is C06_No.73T (=NBRC 111893T=BCRC 81282T).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, motile bacterium, designated strain MJ3T, was isolated from myeolchi-jeot (anchovy jeotgal), a traditional fermented seafood in South Korea. Cells were non-endospore-forming cocci showing catalase- and oxidase-positive reactions. Growth of strain MJ3T was observed at 15–45 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–8.0) and in the presence of 1–24 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 10 % NaCl). Phylogenetic inference based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain MJ3T formed a tight phyletic lineage with members of the genus Salimicrobium . Strain MJ3T was related most closely to Salimicrobium salexigens 29CMIT, Salimicrobium album DSM 20748T, Salimicrobium flavidum ISL-25T, Salimicrobium luteum BY-5T and Salimicrobium halophilum DSM 4771T, with similarities of 98.8 %, 98.7 %, 98.6 %, 98.4 % and 98.3 %, respectively. However, the DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain MJ3T (KF732837) and S. salexigens DSM 22782T, S. album DSM 20748T, S. flavidum DSM 23127T, S. luteum KCTC 3989T and S. halophilum JCM 12305T were 60±5.4 %, 58.5±6.5 %, 43.6±5.5 %, 37.2±5.8 % and 16.7±0.2 %, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data (sole isoprenoid quinone, MK-7; major cell-wall type, meso-diaminopimelic acid; major cellular fatty acids, anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0; major polar lipids, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol; DNA G+C content, 46.3 mol%) also supported the affiliation of strain MJ3T with the genus Salimicrobium . Therefore, strain MJ3T represents a novel species of the genus Salimicrobium , for which the name Salimicrobium jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MJ3T ( = KACC 16972T = JCM 19758T).

Strain SulfLac1T, a thermophilic, anaerobic and slightly halophilic, rod-shaped bacterium with a sheath-like outer structure (toga), was isolated from a whey digester in Tunisia. The strain’s non-motile cells measured 3–30×1 µm and appeared singly, in pairs or as long chains. The novel strain reduced thiosulfate and elemental sulfur, but not sulfate or sulfite, into sulfide. It grew at 37–65 °C (optimum 55 °C), at pH 6.5–7.9 (optimum pH 6.9) and with 0.2–3 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0.5 %). The G+C content of the strain’s genomic DNA was 33.6 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SulfLac1T was most closely related to Petrotoga mobilis (91.4 % sequence similarity). Based on phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic evidence, strain SulfLac1T represents a novel species of a new genus within the order Thermotogales , for which the name Defluviitoga tunisiensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is SulfLac1T ( = DSM 23805T  = JCM 17210T).

A bacterial strain, designated FSY-8T, was isolated from a freshwater mesocosm in Taiwan and characterized using the polyphasic taxonomy approach. Cells of strain FSY-8T were aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile and formed yellow coloured colonies on Reasoner's 2A agar. Growth occurred at 20–40 °C (optimum, 30–37 °C) and pH 5–7 (optimum, pH 6) and in the presence of 0–0.5 % NaCl (optimum, 0 %, w/v). The major fatty acids (>10 %) of strain FSY-8T were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1  ω7c and/or C18 : 1  ω6c) and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c). The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid, diphosphatidylglycerol, an uncharacterized aminophospholipid, an uncharacterized glycolipid and an uncharacterized lipid. The major polyamine was spermidine. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-10. The DNA G+C content was 64.8 mol %. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and coding sequences of 92 protein clusters indicated that strain FSY-8T formed a phylogenetic lineage in the genus Novosphingobium . Strain FSY-8T showed 71.6–77.2 % average nucleotide identity and 19.9–22.8 % digital DNA–DNA hybridization identity with the strains of other Novosphingobium species. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic properties and phylogenetic inference, strain FSY-8T should be classified in a novel species of the genus Novosphingobium , for which the name Novosphingobium ovatum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FSY-8T (=BCRC 81051T=LMG 30053T=KCTC 52812T).
