Strain SulfLac1T, a thermophilic, anaerobic and slightly halophilic, rod-shaped bacterium with a sheath-like outer structure (toga), was isolated from a whey digester in Tunisia. The strain’s non-motile cells measured 3–30×1 µm and appeared singly, in pairs or as long chains. The novel strain reduced thiosulfate and elemental sulfur, but not sulfate or sulfite, into sulfide. It grew at 37–65 °C (optimum 55 °C), at pH 6.5–7.9 (optimum pH 6.9) and with 0.2–3 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0.5 %). The G+C content of the strain’s genomic DNA was 33.6 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SulfLac1T was most closely related to Petrotoga mobilis (91.4 % sequence similarity). Based on phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic evidence, strain SulfLac1T represents a novel species of a new genus within the order Thermotogales , for which the name Defluviitoga tunisiensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is SulfLac1T ( = DSM 23805T  = JCM 17210T).

Enrichment cultures inoculated with hydrothermally influenced nearshore sediment from Papua New Guinea led to the isolation of an arsenic-tolerant, acidophilic, facultatively aerobic bacterial strain designated PNG-AprilT. Cells of this strain were Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile and did not form spores. Strain PNG-AprilT grew at temperatures between 4 °C and 40 °C (optimum 30–37 °C), at pH 3.5 to 8.3 (optimum pH 5–6) and in the presence of up to 2.7 % NaCl (optimum 0–1.0 %). Both arsenate and arsenite were tolerated up to concentrations of at least 0.5 mM. Metabolism in strain PNG-AprilT was strictly respiratory. Heterotrophic growth occurred with O2 or nitrate as electron acceptors, and aerobic lithoautotrophic growth was observed with thiosulfate or nitrite as electron donors. The novel isolate was capable of N2-fixation. The respiratory quinones were Q-8 and Q-7. Phylogenetically, strain PNG-AprilT belongs to the genus Burkholderia and shares the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strains of Burkholderia fungorum (99.8 %), Burkholderia phytofirmans (98.8 %), Burkholderia caledonica (98.4 %) and Burkholderia sediminicola (98.4 %). Differences from these related species in several physiological characteristics (lipid composition, carbohydrate utilization, enzyme profiles) and DNA–DNA hybridization suggested the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Burkholderia , for which we propose the name Burkholderia insulsa sp. nov. The type strain is PNG-AprilT ( = DSM 28142T = LMG 28183T).

A Gram-stain-negative, oxidase-positive, catalase-positive, aerobic, orange-pigmented, rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium designated strain MMS17-SY002T was isolated from island soil. The isolate grew at 20–37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0–9.5 (optimum, pH 7) and in the presence of 0.5–4.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain MMS17-SY002T was mostly related to the genus Muriicola of the family Flavobacteriaceae and had highest sequence similarity of 96.82 % to Muriicola marianensis A6B8T and Muriicola jejuensis EM44T, but formed a distinct phylogenetic line within the genus. Chemotaxonomic analyses showed that menaquinone 6 was the predominant isoprenoid quinone, the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C15 : 0, and the diagnostic polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 42.4 mol%. Strain MMS17-SY002T could be distinguished from related species by the combination of trypsin, α-chymotrypsin, acid phosphatase, naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, α-galactosidase, β-galactosidase and β-glucosidase activities. The orthologous average nucleotide identity between the genomes of strain MMS17-SY002T and M. jejuensis and that between the strain and M. marianensis A6B8T were 73.26 and 73.33%, respectively, thus confirming the separation of the strain from related species at species level. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and genomic characterization, MMS17-SY002T should be recognized as a novel species of the genus Muriicola , for which the name Muriicola soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MMS17-SY002T (=KCTC 62790T=JCM 32370T).

Two novel strains, T9T and T10, were isolated from water samples collected from Chishui River flowing through Maotai town, Guizhou, south-west China. The isolates were yellow-pigmented, Gram-reaction-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile and aerobic. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolates belonged to the genus Flavobacterium , and showed highest similarities to Flavobacterium hibernum DSM 12611T (97.0 %), followed by Flavobacterium granuli Kw05T (96.7 %) and Flavobacterium pectinovorum DSM 6368T (96.7 %). The novel strains were able to grow at 20–37 °C (optimum 25 °C), pH 7.0–10.0 (optimum pH 7.0–8.0) and with 0–0.5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0.5 %). The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c, anteiso-C15 : 0, C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1ω10c, and menaquinone-6 (MK-6) was the main respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown glycolipid, two unknown aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C contents of strains T9T and T10 were 37.7 and 36.4 mol%, respectively. According to the phenotypic and genetic data, strains T9T and T10 represent a novel species in the genus Flavobacterium , for which the name Flavobacterium maotaiense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is T9T ( = CGMCC 1.12712T = JCM 19927T).

A Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped, gliding and pale-pink-pigmented bacterium, designated strain ZLM-10T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from an arid area in Xinjiang province, China, and characterized in a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. The novel strain grew optimally at 30–37 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) sea salts. The only respiratory quinone detected was MK-7 and the major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified aminophospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 45.4 mol%. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ZLM-10T was a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes and appeared most closely related to Cesiribacter roseus 311T (90.2 % sequence similarity), Marivirga sericea LMG 13021T (89.2 %), Cesiribacter andamanensis AMV16T (89.1 %) and Marivirga tractuosa DSM 4126T (89.1 %). On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data and phylogenetic inference, strain ZLM-10T should be classified as a novel species of a new genus in the family Flammeovirgaceae , for which the name Nafulsella turpanensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is ZLM-10T ( = CCTCC AB 208222T = KCTC 23983T).

Strains of Gram-stain-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) faeces, and strain ST166T was investigated taxonomically. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain ST166T belonged to the genus Parabacteroides . Strain ST166T formed a distinct line of descent, and the highest sequence similarity to ST166T was found with Parabacteroides merdae JCM 9497T (95.6 %) and Parabacteroides johnsonii JCM 13406T (95.0 %). Analysis of hsp60 gene sequences also supported these relationships. Based on the phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, the novel species Parabacteroides chinchillae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of P. chinchillae sp. nov. is ST166T ( = JCM 17104T = CCUG 62154T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, orange-pigmented, rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium, designated strain A6B8T, was isolated from seawater of the Mariana Trench. The isolate grew at 4–50 °C (optimum 30–35 °C), at pH 6.5–8.0 (optimum pH 7.5) and with 0.5–4.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1.0–2.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain A6B8T was related most closely to the genus Muriicola and shared highest sequence similarity of 97.7 % with Muriicola jejuensis EM44T. Chemotaxonomic analysis showed menaquinone 6 (MK-6) was the predominant isoprenoid and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH were the major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile of strain A6B8T included phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified aminolipids and four unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.1 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness value (23.3 %) clearly demonstrated that strains A6B8T and M. jejuensis EM44T were representatives of two different species. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characterizations, A6B8T ( = CGMCC 1.12606T = KCTC 32436T) is considered to be the type strain of a novel species of the genus Muriicola , for which the name Muriicola marianensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel strain designated SR18T was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of a ginseng in Korea. Cells were Gram-staining-negative, motile by gliding, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative, non-spore-forming rods. The isolate grew aerobically at 15–45 °C (optimum 28 °C), pH 5.5–7.5 (optimum pH 7.0) and with 0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1.5 % NaCl). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SR18T belongs to the genus Chitinophaga with sequence similarity of 97.2 % and 97.0 % to Chitinophaga japonensis 758T and Chitinophaga rupis CS5-B1T, respectively. Similarity to other species of the genus Chitinophaga was 92.8–95.5 %. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. Major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 1ω5c. The polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, unidentified phospholipids, unknown aminolipids and unknown lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 45.3 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain SR18T and C. japonensis NBRC 16041T was 29–32 %. On the basis of polyphasic analysis from this study, strain SR18T represents a novel species of the genus Chitinophaga , for which the name Chitinophaga ginsengihumi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SR18T ( = KACC 17604T = NBRC 109832T).

A pink-pigmented, chemo-organotrophic bacterium, designated strain 03SUJ4T, was isolated from the freshwater of Juam reservoir, Republic of Korea (35° 03′ 43′′ N 127° 14′ 15′′ E). Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-negative and non-motile rods. Strain 03SUJ4T grew at pH 6–7 (optimum, pH 6) and at 15–30 °C (optimum, 25 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate belonged to the genus Terriglobus , showing sequence similarities of 97.09 % and 96.82 % to Terriglobus roseus DSM 18391T and Terriglobus saanensis SP1PR4T, respectively. Low rpoB gene sequence similarity with members of the genus Terriglobus and different fingerprints with the repetitive primers BOX, ERIC and REP indicated that the isolate represented a novel species of the genus Terriglobus . The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, C20 : 1ω9c, C14 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c). The DNA G+C content of strain 03SUJ4T was 63.2±0.1 mol% (mean±sd of three determinations). The predominant menaquinone was MK-8. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified phospholipids. Several phenotypic characteristics served to differentiate the novel isolate from recognized members of the genus Terriglobus . On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, a novel species, Terriglobus aquaticus sp. nov. is proposed for strain 03SUJ4T ( = KCTC 23332T = JCM 17517T).

A novel aerobic streptomycete, strain SCSIO 01248T, was isolated from a sample of deep-sea sediment collected from the northern South China Sea, at a depth of 1632 m. This isolate formed yellow–white substrate mycelium and grey–white aerial hyphae. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SCSIO 01248T was most closely related to Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (98.8 % sequence similarity), S. macrosporus NBRC 14748T (97.5 %) and S. megasporus NBRC 14749T (97.3 %). The novel strain could, however, be readily differentiated from S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T on the basis of some physiological and cellular chemical characteristics; the level of DNA–DNA relatedness between these two strains was only 40 %. Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, strain SCSIO 01248T represents a novel species, for which the name Streptomyces nanhaiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SCSIO 01248T ( = DSM 41926T  = KCTC 19401T  = CCTCC AA 208007T).

Strain LHWP2T, a novel, aerobic, budding, motile and ovoid bacterium belonging to the phylum Planctomycetes , was isolated from a dead ark clam (Scapharca broughtonii) from the south coast of Korea. Strain LHWP2T grew optimally at 30 °C, in the presence of 4 % (w/v) NaCl, and at pH 7. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c (summed feature 8) and C18 : 1ω9c. The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The dominant polar lipid was identified as phosphatidylglycerol. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the novel strain was most closely related to Blastopirellula marina DSM 3645T, with a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 94.1 %. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain LHWP2T was 49.5 mol%. Strain LHWP2T was distinguished from B. marina DSM 3645T based on its optimum salinity, acid production from substrates, assimilation of substrates and DNA G+C content. Overall, these phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data suggest that strain LHWP2T should be classified as a novel species belonging to the genus Blastopirellula , for which the name Blastopirellula cremea sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LHWP2T ( = KACC 15559T = JCM 17758T).
