A Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic, non-pigmented, non-gliding, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain BY4T, was isolated from freshwater. Cells were catalase- and oxidase-positive and indole was produced. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain BY4T belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed 91.6–95.9 % sequence similarities to the most closely related strains. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6 and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The major polyamine was homospermidine and the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The DNA G+C content was 30.0 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic features, strain BY4T is suggested to represent a novel species in a new genus within the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Chishuiella changwenlii gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of this type species is BY4T ( = CGMCC 1.12707T = JCM 19633T). On the basis of data collected from previous and present studies, it is proposed to reclassify Wautersiella falsenii to the genus Empedobacter as the new combination Empedobacter falsenii comb. nov. (type strain NF 993T = CCUG 51536T = CIP 108861T).

Strains RU-16T, RU-28, RU-04T and PU-02T were isolated from the gut of the African mole cricket, Gryllotalpa africana. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strains belonged to the family Microbacteriaceae . All four strains were most closely related to Curtobacterium ginsengisoli DCY26T (below 97 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). These isolates were Gram-stain-positive, motile (by gliding), rod-shaped and exhibited ivory-coloured colonies. Their chemotaxonomic properties included MK-11 as the major respiratory quinone, ornithine as the cell-wall diamino acid, acetyl as the acyl type of the peptidoglycan, cyclohexyl-C17 : 0 as the major fatty acid and phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, we propose a new genus in the family Microbacteriaceae , Gryllotalpicola gen. nov., with three novel species, Gryllotalpicola daejeonensis sp. nov. (type strain RU-04T  = KCTC 13809T  = JCM 17590T), Gryllotalpicola koreensis sp. nov. (type strain RU-16T  = KCTC 13810T  = JCM 17591T) and Gryllotalpicola kribbensis sp. nov. (type strain PU-02T  = KCTC 13808T  = JCM 17593T). Gryllotalpicola koreensis is the type species of the genus. Additionally, we propose that Curtobacterium ginsengisoli should be reclassified in the genus as Gryllotalpicola ginsengisoli comb. nov. (type strain DCY26T  = KCTC 13163T  = JCM 14773T).

Two yellow, rod-shaped, Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic bacterial strains, designated JC2682T and JC2681T, were isolated from a seawater sample of Jeju Island, Korea. The isolates required sea salts for growth and showed gliding motility. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strains JC2682T and JC2681T shared 96.9 % similarity and formed a robust monophyletic group within the radiation encompassing the family Flavobacteriaceae . This distinct clade, which had varying branch positions depending on the tree-making algorithm used, represents a new genus within the family Flavobacteriaceae . The predominant isoprenoid quinone (menaquinone 6, MK-6) and DNA G+C content (27–33 mol%) were consistent with its assignment to the family Flavobacteriaceae , but the polar lipid profile, fatty acid composition and overall phenotypic traits demonstrated that the test strains were not closely affiliated to any recognized genera. Based on data from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strains JC2682T and JC2681T are considered to represent two novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the names Flavivirga jejuensis gen. nov., sp. nov. and Flavivirga amylovorans sp. nov. are proposed, respectively. The type strain of Flavivirga jejuensis is JC2682T ( = KACC 14158T  = JCM 17113T). The type strain of Flavivirga amylovorans is JC2681T ( = KACC 14157T  = JCM 17112T). Amended descriptions of the genera Psychroserpens and Lacinutrix are provided.

A light-yellow-coloured bacterium, designated strain PTJT-5T, was isolated from the stem of Smilacina japonica A. Gray collected from Taibai Mountain in Shaanxi Province, north-west China, and was subjected to a taxonomic study by using a polyphasic approach. The novel isolate grew optimally at 25–28 °C and pH 6.0–7.0. Flexirubin-type pigments were produced. Cells were Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped and non-motile. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain PTJT-5T was a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes , exhibiting the highest sequence similarity to Lacibacter cauensis NJ-8T (87.7 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The only polyamine was homospermidine and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The only respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the DNA G+C content was 40.3 mol%. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain PTJT-5T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Chitinophagaceae , for which the name Taibaiella smilacinae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Taibaiella smilacinae is PTJT-5T ( = CCTCC AB 2013017T = KCTC 32316T). An emended description of Flavihumibacter petaseus is also proposed.

Twenty-nine isolates of an unknown haemophilic organism were isolated from the lungs of pigs from 14 farms in Australia. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene, recN and rpoA showed a monophyletic group that was most closely related to Glaesserella parasuis and [ Actinobacillus ] indolicus. Whole genome sequence analysis indicated that the Glaesserella parasuis and this group, using the type strain HS4635T for comparison, showed a similarity of 30.9 % DNA–DNA renaturation. The isolates were Gram-stain-negative, NAD-dependent, CAMP-negative and were oxidase-positive, catalase-negative and produced indole but not urease. The isolates could be separated from all currently recognized haemophilic and non-haemophilic members of the family Pastuerellaceae. Key phenotypic properties were the production of indole, the lack of urease activity, production of β-galactosidase but not α-fucosidase, acid formation from (−)-d-arabinose, (+)-d-galactose, maltose and trehalose and a failure to produce acid from (−)-d-mannitol. Taken together, these data indicate that the isolates belong to a novel species for which the name Glaesserella australis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HS4635T (=CCUG 71931T and LMG 30645T).

Two red-pigmented isolates, designated RQ-33T and TU-13, were recovered from hot spring runoffs on the Island of São Miguel in the Azores, Portugal. These organisms have an optimum growth temperature of approximately 45 °C and an optimum pH for growth between 7.5 and 8.5. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the novel isolates were most closely related to the type strain of Cecembia lonarensis at 96.4 % pairwise similarity. Cells of the two isolates were non-motile, rod-shaped, Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, and oxidase- and catalase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and C15 : 0, phosphatidylethanolamine was the major polar lipid, and menaquinone 7 was the major respiratory quinone. Based on phylogenetic analyses, and physiological and biochemical characteristics, these isolates from the Azores represent a novel species of the genus Cecembia for which the name Cecembia calidifontis is proposed with strain RQ-33T ( = DSM 21411T = LMG 24596T) as the type strain. The description of the genus Cecembia is also emended.

A Gram-staining-negative, non-pigmented, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, non-motile bacterium, devoid of bacteriochlorophyll, designated strain CC-AMW-ET, was isolated from surface seawater off the coast at Kending, Taiwan. Strain CC-AMW-ET shared 95.7 and 93.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively, with the type strains of the type species of the genera Donghicola ( Donghicola eburneus SW-277T) and Roseovarius ( Roseovarius tolerans EL-172T). The predominant (>75 % of the total) fatty acid was summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c). The polar lipid profile included major amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminolipid. In addition, moderate amounts of an unidentified lipid and trace amounts of an unidentified phospholipid were detected. The DNA G+C content was 67.9 mol%. Ubiquinone Q-10 was the sole respiratory quinone. Based on its phylogenetic distinctiveness and distinguishing phenotypic characteristics (in particular its polar lipid pattern), we conclude that strain CC-AMW-ET represents a novel genus and species of the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which the name Youngimonas vesicularis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Youngimonas vesicularis is CC-AMW-ET ( = JCM 18819T = BCRC 80549T). In addition, an emended description of the genus Donghicola Yoon et al. 2007 and the reclassification of Donghicola xiamenensis Tan et al. 2009 as Pseudodonghicola xiamenensis gen. nov., comb. nov. (type strain Y-2T = MCCC 1A00107T = LMG 24574T = CGMCC 1.7081T) are proposed.

Flexirubin-type pigments were produced. Cells were catalase- and oxidase-positive and non-gliding rods. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain M0116T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae and was most closely related to members of the genera Empedobacter , Wautersiella and Weeksella with 90.5–91.0 % sequence similarities. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6 and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain M0116T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Moheibacter sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M0116T ( = CGMCC 1.12708T = JCM 19634T). Emended descriptions of Empedobacter brevis , Wautersiella falsenii and Weeksella virosa are also proposed.

A pure culture of an actinobacterium previously described as ‘Candidatus Rhodoluna lacicola ’ strain MWH-Ta8 was established and deposited in two public culture collections. Strain MWH-Ta8T represents a free-living planktonic freshwater bacterium obtained from hypertrophic Meiliang Bay, Lake Taihu, PR China. The strain was characterized by phylogenetic and taxonomic investigations, as well as by determination of its complete genome sequence. Strain MWH-Ta8T is noticeable due to its unusually low values of cell size (0.05 µm3), genome size (1.43 Mbp), and DNA G+C content (51.5 mol%). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and RpoB sequences suggested that strain MWH-Ta8T is affiliated with the family Microbacteriaceae with Pontimonas salivibrio being its closest relative among the currently described species within this family. Strain MWH-Ta8T and the type strain of Pontimonas salivibrio shared a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 94.3 %. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain MWH-Ta8T was of type B2β (B10), containing 2,4-diaminobutyric acid as the diamino acid. The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (36.5 %), iso-C16 : 0 (16.5 %), iso-C15 : 0 (15.6 %) and iso-C14 : 0 (8.9 %), and the major (>10 %) menaquinones were MK-11 and MK-12. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unknown glycolipids. The combined phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data clearly suggest that strain MWH-Ta8T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Microbacteriaceae , for which the name Rhodoluna lacicola gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is MWH-Ta8T ( = DSM 23834T = LMG 26932T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, proteorhodopsin-containing, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped, non-gliding and strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain YIK12T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment of Yeongheung Island at the coast of the West Sea of Korea. Cells produced non-diffusible carotenoid pigments, but not flexirubin-type pigment. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate was affiliated to the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed highest similarity to Sediminibacter furfurosus MAOS-86T (93.3 %). Growth was observed at 24–44 °C (optimum 30 °C), at pH 6.5–8.0 (optimum 7.0) and in the presence of 1.5–7.0 % sea salts (optimum 2 %). The DNA G+C content was 40.4 mol% and the predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C16 : 0 3-OH, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6. On the basis of data from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strain YIK12T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Hoppeia youngheungensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of H. youngheungensis is YIK12T ( = KCCM 43023T = JCM 19488T). Emended descriptions of the genus Sediminibacter and Sediminibacter furfurosus are given.

Strain HNM0947T, representing a novel actinobacterium, was isolated from the coral Galaxea astreata collected from the coast of Wenchang, Hainan, China. The strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics consistent with the genus Nocardiopsis . The organism formed abundant fragmented substrate mycelia and aerial mycelia which differentiated into non-motile, rod-shaped spores. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and no diagnostic sugars. The major menaquinones were MK-10(H8), MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H4). The major phospholipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. The major fatty acids were iso-C16:0, anteiso-C17:0, C18:0, C18:0 10-methyl (TBSA) and anteiso-C15:0. The G+C content was 71.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HNM0947T belonged to the genus Nocardiopsis and shared highest sequence similarity to Nocardiopsis salina YIM 90010T (98.8%), Nocardiopsis xinjiangensis YIM 90004T(98.5%) and Nocardiopsis kunsanensis DSM 44524T (98.3%). The strain HNM0947T was distinguished from its closest type strain by low average nucleotide identity (90.8%) and dDDH values (60.4%) respectively. Based on genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics, it was concluded that strain HNM0947T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardiopsis whose name was proposed as Nocardiopsis coralli sp. nov. The type strain was HNM0947T (=CCTCC AA 2020015 T=KCTC 49525 T).
