An actinobacterium, strain YIM 70010T, which was isolated from a desert soil sample collected in Egypt, was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomy study. The organism was alkalitolerant and its optimum growth occurred at pH 8·0–9·0. The isolate contained chemotaxonomic markers that were characteristic of the genus Citricoccus, i.e. the peptidoglycan type Lys–Gly–Glu (variation A4α), the predominant menaquinone MK-9(H2) and a polar lipid profile consisting of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and two unknown glycolipids. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 63·8 mol%. Strain YIM 70010T exhibited a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 99·6 % and DNA–DNA relatedness value of 56 % with Citricoccus muralis DSM 14442T. The phenotypic characteristics and DNA–DNA relatedness data indicate that strain YIM 70010T can be distinguished from C. muralis (DSM 14442T). Therefore, on the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic data presented, a novel species of the genus Citricoccus, Citricoccus alkalitolerans sp. nov. (type strain, YIM 70010T=CCTCC AA 203008T=DSM 15665T=KCTC 19012T) is proposed.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Flavobacterium-like bacterial strain, DS-20T, was isolated from soil from the island of Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-20T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-20T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-20T and the type strains of recognized Flavobacterium species were below 94.9 %. Strain DS-20T differed from phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-20T was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as representing a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-20T (=KCTC 12761T=DSM 17934T).

Five strains of lactic acid bacteria were isolated from a compost of distilled shochu residue in Japan. The isolates were separated into two groups on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, and two subclusters were formed that comprised micro-organisms closely related to Lactobacillus buchneri, L. diolivorans, L. hilgardii, L. kefiri, L. parabuchneri and L. parakefiri. DNA–DNA relatedness results revealed that the isolates could be separated into two groups, and these groups correlated well with the subclusters generated using the phylogenetic analysis. Moreover, the levels of DNA–DNA relatedness showed clear separation of the two groups from their phylogenetic relatives. Therefore, the two groups represent two novel species, for which the names Lactobacillus farraginis sp. nov. (type strain NRIC 0676T=JCM 14108T=DSM 18382T) and Lactobacillus parafarraginis sp. nov. (type strain NRIC 0677T=JCM 14109T=DSM 18390T) are proposed.

Strain HHS 11T was isolated from a water sample collected from the snout of Hamta glacier located in the Himalayan mountain ranges of India. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses established the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Dyadobacter. HHS 11T possessed 96 and 95 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with respect to Dyadobacter crusticola and Dyadobacter fermentans, respectively. Furthermore, strain HHS 11T differs from D. crusticola and D. fermentans in a number of phenotypic characteristics. These data suggest that strain HHS 11T represents a novel species of the genus Dyadobacter, for which the name Dyadobacter hamtensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HHS 11T (=JCM 12919T=MTCC 7023T).

A taxonomic study was performed on strain D7015T, which was isolated from coastal sediment close to a coal-fired power station in Qingdao, China. Cells of strain D7015T were Gram-positive, non-motile, diphtheroid rods that grew in the presence of 0–8 % (w/v) NaCl and at 4–37 °C, with optimum growth at 1 % (w/v) NaCl and 30–32 °C. The DNA G+C content was 65.0 mol%. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω9c (56.18 %), C16 : 0 (38.02 %), C16 : 1 ω7c (4.45 %), C18 : 0 (1.0 %) and C14 : 0 (0.35 %). On the basis of morphological, physiological and phylogenetic characteristics, strain D7015T was classified in the genus Corynebacterium. It exhibited a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95.9 % and a DNA–DNA relatedness value of 20.4 % with Corynebacterium halotolerans DSM 44683T. Strain D7015T was sufficiently different from recognized species of the genus Corynebacterium to be considered to represent a novel species. The name Corynebacterium marinum sp. nov. is proposed, with strain D7015T (=CGMCC 1.6998T=NRRL B-24779T) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Brevundimonas-like bacterial strain, DS-18T, was isolated from soil in Dokdo, Korea, and its exact taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DS-18T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C without NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-18T belonged to the genus Brevundimonas. Strain DS-18T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 68.7 mol%. Strain DS-18T exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.3–98.7 % to the type strains of Brevundimonas species and Mycoplana bullata. Mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain DS-18T and the type strains of phylogenetically related Brevundimonas species and M. bullata were in the range 15–32 %. Strain DS-18T differed from Brevundimonas species and M. bullata in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain DS-18T represents a novel species of the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas lenta sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-18T (=KCTC 12871T =JCM 14602T).

Three novel strains isolated from brewery environments are described. These strains were Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, heterofermentative rods that did not exhibit catalase activity. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that these strains belong to the genus Lactobacillus and are most closely related to Lactobacillus collinoides (approximately 99 % similarity). The novel strains could be differentiated from L. collinoides on the basis of DNA–DNA relatedness, differences in beer-spoilage ability and the inability to utilize d-fructose. These isolates represent a novel species, for which the name Lactobacillus paracollinoides sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LA2T (=DSM 15502T=JCM 11969T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-GRX6T, was isolated from mucky soil collected from a stream of Jinlong Mountain in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, north China, and characterized using a polyphasic approach. The isolate formed irregular sporangia containing motile sporangiospores on the substrate mycelium. The whole-cell sugars were xylose, glucose and galactose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H6), MK-10(H4) and MK-9(H4). The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C15 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c, C17 : 1ω7c and C18 : 0. The phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The DNA G+C content was 67 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies showed that strain NEAU-GRX6T belonged to the genus Actinoplanes , being most closely related to Actinoplanes palleronii IFO 14916T (97.80 % similarity) and Actinoplanes missouriensis NBRC 102363T (97.76 %). However, the low observed levels of DNA–DNA relatedness allowed the isolate to be differentiated from the above-mentioned species of the genus Actinoplanes . Moreover, strain NEAU-GRX6T could also be distinguished from A. palleronii IFO 14916T and A. missouriensis NBRC 102363T by phenotypic characteristics. Therefore, it is proposed that strain NEAU-GRX6T represents a novel species of the genus Actinoplanes , for which the name Actinoplanes lutulentus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain NEAU-GRX6T ( = CGMCC 4.7090T = DSM 45883T).

An anaerobic, thermophilic, filamentous (0.45 × >100 µm) bacterium, designated D1-25-10-4T, was isolated from a deep hot aquifer in France. Cells were non-motile and Gram-negative. Growth was observed at 43–65 °C (optimum 55 °C), at pH 6.8–7.8 (optimum pH 7.0) and with 0–5 g NaCl l−1 (optimum 0 g NaCl l−1). Strain D1-25-10-4T was a chemo-organotroph and fermented ribose, maltose, glucose, galactose, arabinose, fructose, mannose, sucrose, raffinose, xylose, glycerol, fumarate, peptone, starch and xylan. Yeast extract was required for growth. Sulfate, thiosulfate, sulfite, elemental sulfur, nitrate, nitrite and fumarate were not used as terminal electron acceptors. The G+C content of the DNA was 61.9 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids of strain D1-25-10-4T were C17 : 0, C18 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The closest phylogenetic relative of strain D1-25-10-4T was Caldilinea aerophila STL-6-O1T (97.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain D1-25-10-4T and Caldilinea aerophila DSM 14535T was 8.7±1 %. On the basis of phylogenetic, genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, strain D1-25-10-4T represents a novel species within the genus Caldilinea, class Caldilineae, phylum Chloroflexi, for which the name Caldilinea tarbellica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is D1-25-10-4T ( = DSM 22659T  = JCM 16120T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium (designated strain CC-Bw-5T) was isolated from chopped tomato stems. The isolate grew at 20–40 °C, pH 6.0–8.0 and tolerated 6  % (w/v) NaCl. The most closely related strains in terms of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity were Bacillus isabeliae (95.3  %) and Bacillus oleronius (95.3  %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 37.2 ± 3.6 mol%. Strain CC-Bw-5T was determined to possess C16 : 0, iso-C14 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as predominant fatty acids. The polar lipid profile consisted of predominant amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, and moderate-to-trace amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified glycolipids, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified phosphoglycolipid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid; menaquinone (MK-7) was the predominant respiratory quinone. According to distinct phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain CC-Bw-5T is proposed to represent a novel species within the genus Bacillus for which the name Bacillus lycopersici sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-Bw-5T ( = BCRC 80623T = JCM 19140T).

Strain DS-6T grew optimally at pH 7.0 and 25 °C in the presence of 0–0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 36.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain DS-6T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-6T and the type strains of Flavobacterium species were below 95.4 %. Strain DS-6T differed from some phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, DS-6T (=KCTC 12542T=CIP 108840T) was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium soli sp. nov. is proposed.
