Although the type species of the genus Thermoanaerobium, Thermoanaerobium brockii, was transferred to Thermoanaerobacter, Thermoanaerobium acetigenum was not transferred. Therefore, Thermoanaerobium acetigenum should be reclassified. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and re-examination of physiological properties of the type strain, X6BT (=DSM 7040T=ATCC BAA-1149T), we propose that Thermoanaerobium acetigenum should be reclassified as Caldicellulosiruptor acetigenus comb. nov. Strain X6BT contains two separate 16S rRNA genes bracketing another species in the phylogenetic 16S rRNA gene-based tree.

A polyphasic study was undertaken to clarify the taxonomic position of Nonomuraea flexuosa DSM 41386T. The distinct 16S rRNA gene sequence phyletic branch formed by this strain was equated with nine related monophyletic clades composed of representatives of the genera classified in the family Streptosporangiaceae. The organism produced a PCR product characteristic of this taxon when examined using a set of oligonucleotide primers specific for members of the family Streptosporangiaceae. Strain DSM 41386T could also be distinguished from representatives of the nine genera assigned to this family using a combination of chemotaxonomic, morphological and physiological properties. It is evident from the genotypic and phenotypic data that strain DSM 41386T is misclassified in the genus Nonomuraea and merits recognition as a monospecific genus within the family Streptosporangiaceae. It is proposed that the name Thermopolyspora flexuosa gen. nov., comb. nov., nom. rev. be used for this purpose, with the type strain DSM 41386T (=NRRL B-24348T).

A Gram-negative, short rod-shaped micro-organism (CC-BB4T) was isolated on nutrient agar from soil from Sinshe in Taichung County, Taiwan. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence demonstrated that this isolate was novel, as it showed <92 % similarity to the sequences of species of the genera Labrys, Beijerinckia and Methylocystis. The micro-organism did not utilize methylamine or methanol as a substrate, but was able to use several organic acids. The fatty acid profile was different from those reported for the genera Labrys, Beijerinckia, Methylocystis, Angulomicrobium, Methylorhabdus and Methyloarcula. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, in combination with chemotaxonomic and physiological data, strain CC-BB4T represents a novel genus, for which the name Pseudolabrys gen. nov. is proposed. The type species is Pseudolabrys taiwanensis sp. nov., and the type strain of P. taiwanensis is CC-BB4T (=CCUG 51779T=CIP 108932T).

A Gram-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming organism, strain CCUG 47242T, was isolated from a sample of industrial starch production in Sweden. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated that this isolate was moderately related to species of the genus Paenibacillus, with <94·4 % sequence similarity to all other hitherto described Paenibacillus species. Strain CCUG 47242T showed the greatest sequence similarity (96·5 %) to ‘Paenibacillus hongkongensis’ HKU3, a strain with a name that has not yet been validly published. Chemotaxonomic data [major menaquinone, MK-7 (98 %); major polar lipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, lysyl-phosphatidylglycerol, two unknown phospholipids, four unknown aminophospholipids; major fatty acids, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0] showed some significant differences when compared with the type species of the genus Paenibacillus, Paenibacillus polymyxa. Physiological and biochemical tests allowed clear phenotypic differentiation of strain CCUG 47242T from strain HKU3. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, in combination with chemotaxonomic data, strains CCUG 47242T and HKU3 represent two novel species of a new genus of endospore-forming bacteria for which we propose the names Cohnella thermotolerans gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain CCUG 47242T=CIP 108492T=DSM 17683T) and Cohnella hongkongensis sp. nov. (type strain HKU3T=CCUG 49571T=CIP 107898T=DSM 17642T).

Four strains (3001T, 2, 12 and 13), which were isolated as chitosanase-producing bacteria from soil from Matsue city (Japan), were studied phenotypically, genotypically and phylogenetically. Based on sequence analysis of 16S rRNA genes, DNA G+C content (67·4–69·2 mol%), quinone type (UQ-8), major fatty acid composition (3-OH 10 : 0, 3-OH 14 : 0) and other phylogenetic studies, strains 3001T, 12 and 13 were found to occupy a separate position in the ‘Betaproteobacteria’. Roseateles depolymerans, Rubrivivax gelatinosus and Ideonella dechloratans were their closest neighbours (93–95 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The 16S rRNA gene sequence and other characteristics suggested that strain 2 belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments supported the conclusion that strains 3001T, 12 and 13 were of the same species (72–78 % DNA hybridization) and only distantly related to I. dechloratans and R. gelatinosus. It is proposed that strains 3001T, 12 and 13 represent a novel genus and species for which the name Mitsuaria chitosanitabida gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Mitsuaria chitosanitabida is 3001T (=IAM 14711T=ATCC BAA-476T).

A strain isolated from pleural fluid of a patient with suppurative pleuritis (strain GTC 3021T) was characterized in terms of its phenotypic and biochemical features, cellular fatty acid profile and phylogenetic position based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate was a member of the genus Prevotella. The isolate was related to Prevotella enoeca ATCC 51261T with about 92 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The strain was an obligately anaerobic, non-pigmenting, non-spore-forming, non-motile, Gram-negative rod. Although the phenotypic and biochemical characteristics of the strain were similar to those of P. enoeca JCM 12259T, the cellular fatty acid composition of the isolate was significantly different from that of P. enoeca JCM 12259T (C18 : 1 ω9c and anteiso-C15 : 0 fatty acid content). Based on these data, we propose a novel Prevotella species, Prevotella pleuritidis sp. nov., with the type strain GTC 3021T (=JCM 14110T =CCUG 54350T). The G+C content of the type strain is 45.4 mol%.

A collection of eight clinical strains from Belgian hospitals and three clinical strains of the CCUG collection were characterized biochemically as being similar to CDC groups II-h and II-c; the latter differs from group II-h only by positivity for sucrose acidification. These 11 strains were found to cluster according to 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity at a level of ≥99.5 %, and on the basis of their tDNA-PCR profile. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, this collection of strains was related most closely to Chryseobacterium hispanicum (97.2 %), but they differed from the type strain of this species by the following phenotypic characteristics: growth at 37 °C, negativity for xylose acidification, positivity for acetate assimilation–alkalinization on Simmons’ agar base and absence of flexirubin pigments, and by their tDNA-PCR profile. Strain NF802T showed only 57.8 % DNA–DNA relatedness to the type strain of C. hispanicum. Fatty acid composition did not enable differentiation from C. hispanicum. The DNA G+C content of strain NF802T is 36.5 mol%. The name Chryseobacterium hominis sp. nov. is proposed for this taxon, with type strain NF802T (=CCUG 52711T=CIP 109415T).

The taxonomic positions of ‘Renobacter vacuolatum’ DSM 1277 and ‘Ancylobacter polymorphus’ DSM 2457 were investigated in this study. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that both strains belonged to the genus Ancylobacter. DNA–DNA hybridization showed that they differed from Ancylobacter aquaticus DSM 101T and Ancylobacter rudongensis AS 1.1761T. According to molecular and phenotypic characteristics, strain DSM 1277T (=AS 1.2807T) is proposed as the type strain of Ancylobacter vacuolatus sp. nov. At the same time, valid publication of the name Ancylobacter polymorphus sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain DSM 2457T (=AS 1.2800T=NCIMB 10516T).

The taxonomic position of a novel marine, heterotrophic, gliding, halotolerant and light-pink-pigmented bacterium, designated strain KMM 6221T, was examined by using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain KMM 6221T is affiliated with the genus Echinicola, a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes, with levels of similarity of 94.7–95.0 % to strains of Echinicola pacifica. Growth of strain KMM 6221T was observed with 0–15 % NaCl and at 6–44 °C. The DNA G+C content of strain KMM 6221T was 45.9 mol%. On the basis of molecular distinctiveness supported by phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain KMM 6221T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Echinicola, for which the name Echinicola vietnamensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 6221T (=DSM 17526T=LMG 23754T).

ABSTRACT Bacteroidales species were detected in (tap) water samples from treatment plants with three different PCR assays. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the sequences had an environmental rather than fecal origin. We conclude that assays for Bacteroidales 16S rRNA genes are not specific enough to discern fecal contamination of drinking water in the Netherlands.

Two yellow-pigmented, Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, motile, short rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from natural teak tree rhizosphere soil and their taxonomic positions were determined by using a polyphasic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strains TG-S248T and TG-S240 formed a distinct phyletic line within the genus Leifsonia. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain TG-S248T with sequences from Leifsonia shinshuensis DB 102T, L. poae VKM Ac-1401T, L. naganoensis DB 103T, L. aquatica DSM 20146T and L. xyli subsp. cynodontis JCM 9733T revealed pairwise similarities ranging from 98.7 to 99.1 %. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA of the type strain was 69.4 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments revealed low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness (32 % or less) between strain TG-S248T and its closest relatives. Based on differences in phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain TG-S248T (=LMG 24767T =JCM 15679T) is designated the type strain of a novel species of the genus Leifsonia, for which the name Leifsonia soli sp. nov. is proposed.
