A coral-red-pigmented actinobacterium, strain K30-10T, was isolated from a soil sample from a cold desert of the Indian Himalayas. Chemical and phenotypic properties of strain K30-10T were consistent with its classification in the genus Dietzia. It showed 97.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Dietzia maris MTCC 7011T; similarities to the type strains of three other species of the genus, Dietzia natronolimnaea, Dietzia psychralcaliphila and Dietzia cinnamea, were 94.4–96.0 %. The DNA–DNA relatedness between K30-10T and the closely related strain D. maris MTCC 7011T was 59.2 %. The DNA G+C content of strain K30-10T was 67.0 mol%. Based on physiological and biochemical tests and genotypic differences between strain K30-10T and its closest phylogenetic relatives, it is proposed that this strain represents a novel species, Dietzia kunjamensis sp. nov.; the type strain is K30-10T (=MTCC 7007T=DSM 44907T=JCM 13325T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated LMG 2337T, was isolated from the blood of a patient with endocarditis and characterized. The strain was affiliated with the alphaproteobacterial genus Brevundimonas, with Brevundimonas diminuta LMG 2089T (98.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Brevundimonas terrae KSL-145T (97.5 %) as its closest relatives. This affiliation was supported by chemotaxonomic data: the G+C content was 66.3 mol %, the major polar lipids were phosphatidyl diacylglycerol, sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol and phosphatidyl glucopyranosyl diacylglycerol and the major fatty acids were summed feature 7 (one or more of C18 : 1 ω7c, C18 : 1 ω9t and C18 : 1 ω12t) and C16 : 0. Strain LMG 2337T displayed an unusually broad substrate spectrum. The results from DNA–DNA hybridization and physiological and biochemical tests allowed the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain LMG 2337T from all of the type strains of hitherto-described Brevundimonas species. The strain therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Brevundimonas vancanneytii sp. nov. is proposed, with type strain LMG 2337T (=CCUG 1797T =ATCC 14736T).

An actinobacterial strain, RMV-1378T, isolated from a cold desert of the Indian Himalayas, was subjected to polyphasic taxonomic characterization. The strain formed branching, non-fragmenting vegetative hyphae and did not produce diffusible pigments. Neither aerial mycelium nor spore formation was observed. The G+C content of the DNA was 72·0 mol%. The strain had chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of the genus Actinoalloteichus and was closely related (99·3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) to Actinoalloteichus cyanogriseus, currently the only Actinoalloteichus species with a validly published name. However, the results of DNA–DNA hybridization experiments showed 51·9 % relatedness with the type strain of A. cyanogriseus. On the basis of the above data and the physiological and biochemical distinctiveness of RMV-1378T (=MTCC 6194T=JCM 12472T=DSM 44848T), this strain should be classified as the type strain of a novel species of Actinoalloteichus, for which the name Actinoalloteichus spitiensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic strain was isolated from black tea. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity comparisons, strain QC88-366T was grouped into the genus Pantoea, being related most closely to the type strains of Pantoea gaviniae (98.5 %) and Pantoea calida (98.3 %); sequence similarities were ≤ 97.0 % to the type strains of other species of the genus Pantoea. Multilocus sequence analysis based on partial sequences of the gyrB, rpoB, infB and atpD genes also revealed P. gaviniae and P. calida as the closest phylogenetic relatives. The fatty acid profile showed the major fatty acids of strain QC88-366T were C16 : 0, C16 : 1 and C18 : 1, the same as those of its closest related species. However, the ratio of C16 : 1, C17 : 0 cyclo, C18 : 1 and C18 : 2 differed slightly compared with those of the related neighbours. In addition, the results of physiological and biochemical tests also allowed the phenotypic differentiation of strain QC88-366T from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. The G+C content of the DNA was 57.2 mol%. Strain QC88-366T therefore represents a novel species of the genus Pantoea, for which the name Pantoea theicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is QC88-366T ( = DSM 29212T = NBRC 110557T).

A Gram-positive, coccoid, non-endospore-forming actinobacterium (strain CCUG 35676T) was isolated from cerebrospinal fluid from a 24-year-old woman in Gothenborg, Sweden. Based on pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies, strain CCUG 35676T was shown to belong to the genus Dietzia and was most closely related to the type strains of Dietzia aerolata (99.3 %), Dietzia lutea (98.8 %), Dietzia schimae (98.5 %), Dietzia maris (98.5 %), Dietzia alimentaria (98.3 %) and Dietzia cercidiphylli (98.0 %). The major menaquinone was MK-8(H2). Major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, an unidentified aminophospholipid (APL1), an unidentified phospholipid (PL1) and unidentified glycolipids (GL1 and GL3). Numerous other lipids were also detected. The fatty acid profile, comprising C16 : 0, C17 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and 10-methyl-C18 : 0 as major fatty acids, supported the affiliation of strain CCUG 35676T to the genus Dietzia. On the basis of the results of physiological and biochemical tests and DNA–DNA hybridizations, a clear phenotypic and genotypic differentiation of strain CCUG 35676T from the most closely related Dietzia species is possible. Strain CCUG 35676T represents a novel species, for which the name Dietzia aurantiaca sp. nov. is proposed, with CCUG 35676T ( = JCM 17645T) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, non-sporulating, non-flagellated rod, designated BR-9T, was isolated from soil collected on the Korean peninsula. Strain BR-9T grew optimally at pH 6.0–7.0, at 30 °C and in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BR-9T belonged to the genus Pedobacter and clustered with Pedobacter insulae DS-139T and Pedobacter koreensis WPCB189T. Strain BR-9T exhibited 98.2 and 97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis WPCB189T, respectively, and <96.7 % sequence similarity with the type strains of other species in the genus Pedobacter. Strain BR-9T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain BR-9T was 38.5 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain BR-9T and P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis KCTC 12536T was 3.4–4.2 %, which indicated that the isolate was genetically distinct from these type strains. Strain BR-9T was also distinguishable by differences in phenotypic properties. On the basis of the data presented, strain BR-9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter boryungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BR-9T ( = KCTC 23344T  = CCUG 60024T).

An actinomycete, designated strain GIMN4.003T, was isolated from seawater collected in Sanya, China. It produced white aerial mycelium and yellow substrate mycelium on Gause’s synthetic agar medium no. 1. The substrate mycelium colour was not sensitive to pH. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that GIMN4.003T produced straight to flexuous spore chains of rough to warty spores. ll-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall hydrolysate. Based on chemotaxonomy and morphological features, strain GIMN4.003T was identified as a member of the genus Streptomyces. Melanin was not produced. No antimicrobial activity was detected against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Penicillium citrinum or Candida albicans. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the highest sequence similarity was to Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (99.0 %). However, DNA relatedness between GIMN4.003T and S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T was low (41.24±1.47 %). Furthermore, the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of strain GIMN4.003T were different from those of S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T and the type strains of other closely related Streptomyces species. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, it is evident that strain GIMN4.003T ( = CCTCCM 208215T  = NRRL B-24801T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces fenghuangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

Strain VN07A0015T was isolated from soil collected on Cat Ba Island, Vietnam. The taxonomic position of strain VN07A0015T was near Streptomyces aomiensis M24DS4T (98.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Streptomyces scabrisporus NBRC 100760T (95.6 %), and it clustered within them; however, this cluster was distant from the type strains of other species of the genus Streptomyces . The aerial mycelia of strain VN07A0015T were greyish and formed imperfect spiral spore chains (retinaculiaperti type) with smooth-surfaced spores. The morphological features of strain VN07A0015T were different from those of the type strains of S. aomiensis and S. scabrisporus . The chemotaxonomic characteristics of strain VN07A0015T were typical for all members of the genus Streptomyces , which possessed ll-type diaminopimelic acid, menaquinone MK-9(H6, H8) and the major fatty acids iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain VN07A0015T and S. aomiensis NBRC 106164T was less than 30 %. In addition, some physiological and biochemical traits differed from those of S. aomiensis . Therefore, we propose that strain VN07A0015T be classified in the genus Streptomyces as a representative of Streptomyces catbensis sp. nov. (type strain VN07A0015T = VTCC-A-1889T = NBRC 107860T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming, pink-pigmented bacterium, SV97T, was isolated from a wetland soil near Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard Islands, Norway (78° N). On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain SV97T was shown to belong to the Alphaproteobacteria and was highly related to a number of non-characterized Methylocystis strains with GenBank accession nos AJ458507 and AJ458502 (100 %) and AF177299, AJ458510, AJ458467, AJ458471, AJ431384, AJ458475, AJ458484, AJ458501 and AJ458466 (99 %). The most closely related type strains were Methylocystis parvus OBBPT (97·2 %) and Methylocystis echinoides IMET 10491T (97 %). The closest related recognized species within the genus Methylosinus was Methylosinus sporium NCIMB 11126T (96·0 % similarity). Chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data (C18 : 1 ω8 as the major fatty acid, non-motile, no rosette formation) supported the affiliation of strain SV97T to the genus Methylocystis. The results of DNA–DNA hybridization and physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain SV97T from the two recognized Methylocystis species. Strain SV97T therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Methylocystis rosea sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain SV97T (=DSM 17261T=ATCC BAA-1196T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile, non-spore-forming bacterium, designated strain A62-14BT, was isolated from a constant-temperature, spring-fed, freshwater lake. On the basis of the complete 16S rRNA gene sequence, strain A62-14BT was shown to belong to the class Gammaproteobacteria, being most closely related to Rheinheimera sp. HTB082 (96.2 % sequence similarity), Rheinheimera baltica (95.01 %), Rheinheimera pacifica (96.35 %), Rheinheimera perlucida and Alishewanella fetalis (95.9 %). The major fatty acids (C16 : 1 ω7c, 38.56 %; C16 : 0, 19.04 %; C12 : 0 3-OH, 12.83 %; C18 : 1 ω7c, 7.70 %) and the motility of strain A62-14BT support its affiliation to the genus Rheinheimera. The salt intolerance of strain A62-14BT, together with the results of other physiological and biochemical tests, allowed the differentiation of this strain from the three species of the genus Rheinheimera with validly published names. Therefore strain A62-14BT represents a novel species of the genus Rheinheimera, for which the name Rheinheimera texasensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is A62-14BT (=ATCC BAA-1235T=DSM 17496T). The description of the genus Rheinheimera is emended to reflect the halointolerance and freshwater origin of strain A62-14BT.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain, K105T, was isolated from wastewater of a textile dye works in Korea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain K105T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.5 and 30–37 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 36.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain K105T belonged to the genus Chryseobacterium. Strain K105T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of less than 96.9 % to the type strains of recognized Chryseobacterium species. Strain K105T differed from phylogenetically related Chryseobacterium species in several phenotypic properties. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain K105T (=KCTC 12841T=JCM 14362T) is placed in the genus Chryseobacterium as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Chryseobacterium daeguense sp. nov. is proposed.
