A novel gliding, heterotrophic, Gram-negative, yellow–orange-pigmented, aerobic, oxidase- and catalase-positive bacterium, designated strain KMM 6151T, was isolated from the Pacific red alga Polysiphonia japonica. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain revealed that it formed a distinct lineage within the genus Maribacter, family Flavobacteriaceae, with sequence similarities in the range 94.6–96.9 %. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain KMM 6151T represents a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacter polysiphoniae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 6151T (=KCTC 22021T=LMG 23671T).

A thermophilic, alkaliphilic and catalase-positive bacterium, designated strain HA6T, was isolated from a hot spring in China. The strain was aerobic and chemo-organotrophic and grew optimally at 60 °C, pH 8.5 and 1.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The cells were Gram-positive rods, forming single terminal endospores. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 45.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain HA6T formed a distinct lineage within the family Bacillaceae and was most closely related to Bacillus horti K13T and Bacillus smithii DSM 4216T, with sequence similarities of 91.8 and 93.1 %, respectively. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, strain HA6T should be placed in a novel genus and species, for which the name Caldalkalibacillus thermarum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Caldalkalibacillus thermarum is strain HA6T (=CGMCC 1.4242T=JCM 13486T).

Three exopolysaccharide-producing bacteria, designated strains DRP28T, DRP29 and DRP31, were isolated from the rhizoplane of Angelica sinensis from the Geumsan, Republic of Korea. Cells were straight rods, Gram reaction-negative, aerobic, non-motile, and catalase- and oxidase- positive. Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that these bacteria belong to the genus Mucilaginibacter in the phylum Bacteroidetes. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to strains of recognized species of the genus Mucilaginibacter were 93.8–97.4 %. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH). The strains contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. Strains DRP28T, DRP29 and DRP31 formed a single, distinct genomospecies with DNA G+C contents of 41.9–42.7 mol% and DNA hybridization values of 82.6–86.8 %; the strains exhibited DNA–DNA hybridization values of only 20.4–41.3 % with related species of the genus Mucilaginibacter. On the basis of evidence presented in this study, strains DRP28T, DRP29 and DRP31 were considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter polysacchareus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DRP28T ( = KACC 15075T  = NBRC 107757T).

A novel yellow-pigmented, agarolytic bacterial strain, designated ZC1T, was isolated from the surface of the marine red alga Porphyra haitanensis collected near Nan Ao Island, Guangdong province, China. The isolate was Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped and displayed β-galactosidase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase and oxidase activities. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major menaquinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The DNA G+C content was 32.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain ZC1T was closely related to members of the genus Aquimarina in the family Flavobacteriaceae , phylum Bacteroidetes . Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, strain ZC1T ( = CCTCC AB 2010229T  = NBRC 107695T) represents the type strain of a novel species in the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina agarilytica sp. nov. is proposed.

YF-3T is a Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, yellow–orange, rod-shaped bacterium. Optimal growth conditions were at 30 °C, pH 7.0 and 1 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis, on the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, showed that strain YF-3T was closely related to the strains Chryseobacterium hispalense AG13T and Chryseobacterium taiwanense Soil-3-27T with 98.71 % and 96.93 % sequence similarity, respectively. Strain YF-3T contained MK-6 as the main menaquinone and had a polyamine pattern with sym-homospermidine as the major component. Its major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The dominant fatty acids of strain YF-3T were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, summed feature 9 (comprising iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or C16 : 0 10-methyl) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The DNA G+C content of strain YF-3T was 37 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness levels between strain YF-3T and the most closely related strains, C. hispalense AG13T and C. taiwanense Soil-3-27T, were 31.7 ± 2.1 % and 28.4 ± 5.4 %, respectively. Based on these results, a novel species named Chryseobacterium shandongense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YF-3T ( = CCTCC AB 2014060T = JCM 30154T).

A novel endophytic actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-TX2-2T, was isolated from moss and characterized using a polyphasic approach. The isolate was found to have morphological characteristics typical of the genus Microbispora . The isolate formed longitudinally paired spores on the tips of short sporophores that branched from aerial hyphae. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence supported the assignment of the novel strain to the genus Microbispora , and strain NEAU-TX2-2T exhibited 99.08 and 98.62 % gene sequence similarities to Microbispora amethystogenes JCM 3021T and Microbispora rosea subsp. rosea JCM 3006T, respectively. However two tree-making algorithms supported the position that strain NEAU-TX2-2T formed a distinct clade with M. rosea subsp. rosea JCM 3006T. A low level of DNA–DNA relatedness allowed the isolate to be differentiated from M. amethystogenes JCM 3021T and M. rosea subsp. rosea JCM 3006T. Moreover, strain NEAU-TX2-2T could also be distinguished from its closest phylogenetic relatives by morphological and physiological characteristics. Therefore, it is proposed that strain NEAU-TX2-2T represents a novel species of the genus Microbispora for which the name Microbispora bryophytorum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-TX2-2T ( = CGMCC 4.7138T = DSM 46710T).

In the early 1980s, a facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, short rod, designated 202T, was isolated from a chicken crop and identified as a homofermentative lactic acid bacterium. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain was affiliated with the genus Lactobacillus, clustering within the Lactobacillus acidophilus–delbrueckii group. In this analysis, strain 202T appeared to be most closely related to the type strains of Lactobacillus intestinalis and Lactobacillus amylolyticus, with gene sequence similarities of 96.1 and 96.2 %, respectively. Strain 202T was found to differ from these two species, however, when investigated by multilocus sequence analysis, and it also differed in terms of some of its metabolic properties. On the basis of these observations, strain 202T is considered to represent a novel species in the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus gigeriorum sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 202T ( = CRBIP 24.85T = DSM 23908T).

A polyphasic study was carried out to clarify the taxonomic position of a Gram-negative bacterium isolated from soil cultivated with Korean ginseng in the Eumseong region of Korea. The novel strain, GP25-8T, grew optimally at pH 6–7, 28 °C and 0–1 % NaCl (w/v). The major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/C15 : 0 iso 2-OH) and C16 : 0 (together representing 71.2 % of the total). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain GP25-8T and members of the genus Burkholderia ranged from 94.7 to 97.4 %, indicating that this novel strain was phylogenetically related to members of that genus. The novel strain showed the highest sequence similarities to Burkholderia caryophylli ATCC 25418T (97.4 %) and Burkholderia phenazinium LMG 2247T (97.2 %); the levels of DNA–DNA hybridization with these strains were 28 and 12 %, respectively. These results support the conclusion that strain GP25-8T represents a novel species within the genus Burkholderia, for which the name Burkholderia soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GP25-8T (=KACC 11589T=DSM 18235T).

A novel strain, designated KP01T, belonging to the class Sphingobacteria (phylum Bacteroidetes) was isolated from soil in South Korea and was characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. The strain was found to comprise Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming rods. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Chitinophaga but was clearly separated from established Chitinophaga species. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between KP01T and type strains of established Chitinophaga species ranged from 90.3 to 95.7 %. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data (major menaquinone, MK-7; major fatty acids, iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω5c; major hydroxy fatty acid, C17 : 0 iso 3-OH) supported the affiliation of strain KP01T with the genus Chitinophaga. Therefore strain KP01T represents a novel species, for which the name Chitinophaga terrae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KP01T (=KCTC 12836T =LMG 24015T).

Actinomycete strain H9T was isolated from coastal sediment of the Jiao-Dong peninsula (near Tsingdao city) in China, and was identified by means of polyphasic taxonomy. The strain grew autotrophically on modified nitrifying medium and heterotrophically on Luria–Bertani medium, with NaCl ranging from 0 to 8 % (w/v) (optimal growth at 3·5 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of strain H9T to members of the genus Pseudonocardia ranged from 93·0 to 97·5 %, indicating that strain H9T was phylogenetically related to members of the genus Pseudonocardia. Strain H9T had type IV cell wall and type PIII phospholipid, and its major menaquinone was MK-8 (H4). DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain H9T and Pseudonocardia kongjuensis, Pseudonocardia autotrophica and Pseudonocardia compacta were 42, 13 and 11 %, respectively. These results support the conclusion that H9T represents a novel species within the genus Pseudonocardia, for which the name Pseudonocardia ammonioxydans sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain H9T (=CGMCC 4.1877T=JCM 12462T).

Strain JC267T was isolated from pebbles collected from Pingleshwar beach, Gujarat, India. Cells are Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile rods forming sub-terminal endospores in swollen ellipsoidal to oval sporangia. Strain JC267T contains anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C14 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as major (>5 %) cellular fatty acids. Polar lipids include phosphatidylglycerol, phospholipids (PL1–3), glycolipids (GL1–2) and an unidentified lipid. Cell-wall amino acids are composed of diagnostic meso-diaminopimelic acid, dl-alanine and a small amount of d-glutamic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain JC267T is 45.5 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain JC267T showed highest sequence similarities of < 98.41 % with all species of the genus Bacillus when subjected to EzTaxon-e blast analysis. The reassociation values based on DNA–DNA hybridization of strain JC267T with Bacillus halosaccharovorans IBRC-M 10095T and Bacillus niabensis JCM 16399T were 26 ± 1 % and 34 ± 3 %, respectively. Based on taxonomic data obtained using a polyphasic approach, strain JC267T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus endolithicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JC267T ( = IBRC-M 10914T = KCTC 33579T).
