AbstractAimThe dynamic motor control index during walking (walk-DMC) has been shown to be related to patient outcomes and there has been an increasing interest from motion analysis centers regarding using this metric in their own practice. However, the methods for computing the index reported in the literature are not consistent. Here we propose a standardized method and investigate if this leads to results that are consistent between laboratories.MethodComparisons of typically developing controls are made between three independent motion analysis centers. Comparisons are also made between the proposed and previously published methods. A program script to compute the walk-DMC was used for this study and is made freely available with this manuscript.ResultsUsing this script, results are highly consistent between three participating centers. The currently proposed method results in a wider distribution of walk-DMC values than those previously reported.InterpretationUsing consistent processing methods, synergy measures are equivalent between centers. The major differences between current and published data are attributed to the use of concatenation of several walking trials.

Most software for language analysis has relied on an interaction between the metalinguistic skills of a human coder and the calculating ability of the machine to produce reliable results. However, probabilistic parsing algorithms are now capable of highly accurate and completely automatic identification of grammatical word classes. The program Computerized Profiling combines a probabilistic parser with modules customized to produce four clinical grammatical analyses: MLU, LARSP, IPSyn, and DSS. The accuracy of these analyses was assessed on 69 language samples from typically developing, speech-impaired, and language-impaired children, 2 years 6 months to 7 years 10 months. Values obtained with human coding and by the software alone were compared. Results for all four analyses produced automatically were comparable to published data on the manual interrater reliability of these procedures. Clinical decisions based on cutoff scores and productivity data were little affected by the use of automatic rather than human-generated analyses. These findings bode well for future clinical and research use of automatic language analysis software.

Liver transplantation is considered an effective therapeutic option for Wilson’s disease (WD) patients with hepatic phenotype, since it removes the inherited defects of copper metabolism, and is associated with excellent graft and patient outcomes. The role of liver transplantation in WD patients with mixed hepatic and neuropsychiatric phenotype has remained controversial over time, mainly because of high post-operative complications, reduced survival and a variable, unpredictable rate of neurological improvement. This article critically discusses the recently published data in this field, focussing in more detail on isolated neuropsychiatric phenotype as a potential indication for liver transplantation in WD patients.

AbstractFailure to develop prospective motor control has been proposed to be a core phenotypic marker of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, whether genuine differences in prospective motor control permit discriminating between ASD and non-ASD profiles over and above individual differences in motor output remains unclear. Here, we combined high precision measures of hand movement kinematics and rigorous machine learning analyses to determine the true power of prospective movement data to differentiate children with autism and typically developing children. Our results show that while movement is unique to each individual, variations in the kinematic patterning of sequential grasping movements genuinely differentiate children with autism from typically developing children. These findings provide quantitative evidence for a prospective motor control impairment in autism and indicate the potential to draw inferences about autism on the basis of movement kinematics.

Aims and Objectives: Morbidity following ACL reconstruction may be a key factor to reduce muscular dysfunction and increase physical activity. While intra-operative factors have been the focus of standardization within the last years, strategies reducing the morbidity such as postoperative cryotherapy have been investigated less. Goal of this study was to compare subjective and objective patient outcomes following ACL reconstruction with combined compression and cryotherapy compared with traditional ice therapy alone. We hypothesized that ryotherapy/compression will show significantly better results three months after ACL reconstruction compared to cryotherapy alone. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 Patients undergoing ACL reconstruction are prospectively randomized to be treated with cryotherapy/compression device (GameReady, CA/USA, group 1) or a cryotherapy device (Aircast Cryocuff, DJO CA/USA, group 2). ACL reconstructions were performed by a single surgeon with semitendinosus graft and standardized rehabilitation protocol. Patients were instructed to use the ice therapy devices 4 times per day for 30min. Pain management directly postoperatively was analyzed as recorded during clinical records and VAS. Follow-up was performed at 12 weeks postoperatively using visual analog scale (VAS), Lysholm knee score, Short Form 36 (SF36), and Tegner acitiy score. Additionally, a functional “return-to-sports” analysis including isokinetic strength measurements (BTE-primus), proprioceptive tests (MTF tests) and a 3d-motion analysis (myomotion, Noraxon) during bilateral drop jumps and single leg hop tests was performed. Results: VAS and comparison of the administrated painkillers showed no significant differences between the two groups. Both groups used the cryotherapy/compression device and the cryotherapy device as determined by the study protocol. At 12 weeks, there was no significant difference between the two groups with regard to Lysholm score, Tegner score, and SF-36, however there was a trend towards better scores in group 1. The was a higher range of motion in group 1 compared to group 2. Functional analysis with isokinetic strength measurements, proprioceptive test and a 3d-motion analysis revealed better functional results in patients of the group cryotherapy/compression device compared to cryotherapy alone. Conclusion: This prospective analysis of 40 patients following semitendinosus ACL reconstruction with one single surgeon implicates that the use of a cryotherapy/compression device (GameReady) showed significantly better objective patient outcomes following ACL reconstruction compared to cryotherapy alone.

Laplacian eigenmap is used for motion dimension reduction. Eight Kinds of artificially typical 2D motion data are made as input of Laplacian eigenmap, and meaningful conclusions are obtained, which can be easily extended to complex data analysis in real applications. Advanced motion analysis methods have also been discussed briefly, such as 3D motion analysis, view independent motion analysis, pose representation and estimation as well as structural video analysis.

Meta-analyses of head circumference in autistic individuals exist; however, simple meta-analytic approaches are limited. Consequently, we gathered head circumference raw data of autistic ( N = 2381) and typically developing participants ( N = 994) by re-analysing the data from previously published studies together. The present study found no mean difference between head circumference of autistic and typically developing individuals, although simple effect analyses revealed smaller mean head circumference in autistic than typically developing females aged 12–17 months. However, compared to controls, the frequency of extreme head circumference in autistic males was greater at birth and between 60 and 100 months. In addition, the frequency of extremely small head circumference between 6 and 11 months, and extremely large head circumference between 12 and 17 months, was greater in autistic than typically developing males. For autistic females, compared to controls, extreme head circumference was more frequent between 36 and 59 months and less frequent at birth. We conclude that it is imperative to consider the effects of age and sex when investigating the relationship between autism diagnosis and head circumference. This variance was more effectively described via the approach of the present study than previous meta-analytic approaches. Lay abstract Summaries of studies that have measured head size in those with autism, known as meta-analyses, currently exist. However, this approach does not adequately explain extreme cases (such as those with extremely small, or extremely large, head size). Because of this, we obtained all available published data measuring head size (12 studies). The data from each study were then combined to make a larger dataset. We found that females with autism aged 12–17 months had, on average, smaller head sizes. Otherwise, average head size was not atypical in autism. However, we found that males with autism were more likely to have extreme head sizes at birth and between 60 and 100 months, a small head between 6 and 11 months, and a large head between 12 and 17 months. Females with autism were more likely to have extreme head sizes between 36 and 59 months and were less likely at birth. Our approach was able to measure the influence of age and biological sex on head size in autism, as well as the frequency of extreme cases of head size in autism. These results add to what we already know about head size in autism.
