AbstractSleep is classically measured with electrophysiological recordings, which are then scored based on guidelines tailored for the visual inspection of these recordings. As such, these rules reflect a limited range of features easily captured by the human eye and do not always reflect the physiological changes associated with sleep. Here we present a novel analysis framework that characterizes sleep using over 7700 time-series features from the hctsa software. We used clustering to categorize sleep epochs based on the similarity of their features, without relying on established scoring conventions. The resulting structure overlapped substantially with that defined by visual scoring and we report novel features that are highly discriminative of sleep stages. However, we also observed discrepancies as hctsa features unraveled distinctive properties within traditional sleep stages. Our framework lays the groundwork for a data-driven exploration of sleep and the identification of new signatures of sleep disorders and conscious sleep states.

This study evaluates the EUREF Permanent Network (EPN) station position time series of approximately 200 GNSS stations subject to the Repro 2 reprocessing campaign in order to characterize the dominant types of noise and amplitude and their impact on estimated velocity values and associated uncertainties. The visual inspection on how different noise model represents the analysed data was done using the power spectral density of the residuals and the estimated noise model and it is coherent with the calculated Allan deviation (ADEV)-white and flicker noise. The velocities resulted from the dominant noise model are compared to the velocity obtained by using the Median Interannual Difference Adjusted for Skewness (MIDAS). The results show that only 3 stations present a dominant random walk noise model compared to flicker and powerlaw noise model for the horizontal and vertical components. We concluded that the velocities for the horizontal and vertical component show similar values in the case of MIDAS and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), but we also found that the associated uncertainties from MIDAS are higher compared to the uncertainties from MLE. Additionally, we concluded that there is a spatial correlation in noise amplitude, and also regarding the differences in velocity uncertainties for the Up component.

Noninvasive ventilation is a common procedure for managing patients having chronic respiratory failure. The success of this ventilatory assistance is often linked with patient's tolerance that is known to be related to the quality of the synchronization between patient's spontaneous breathing cycles and ventilatory cycles delivered by the ventilator. Thirty-four sleep sessions (more than 5000 ventilatory cycles each) were automatically investigated using a specific algorithm processing airflow and pressure time series. Four groups of patients were defined according to the interplay between asynchrony events and leaks. Different mechanisms that depend on sleep stages were thus evidenced. A Shannon entropy was also proposed as a new sleep fragmentation quantification methodology.
