We discuss the origin and characteristics of the very large intensity-dependent changes in the refractive index of the semiconductor cadmium mercury telluride at 10.6 m. With continuous wave (c.w.) radiation and sample temperatures of 77 K nonlinear Fabry-Perot effects can be observed at powers as low as 1 mW. The Auger dominated recombination process and the thermal contributions to the refractive index make observations of optical bistability difficult with c.w. radiation. However, the use of a pulsed CO 2 laser and two-photon absorption of the radiation does lead to the observation of bistability at room temperature. We compare these results with the reported work on InSb.

We investigate optical bistability in intersubband transitions of an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well structure that has equidistant transitions between three subbands of the system and is placed in a unidirectional cavity. The system is simultaneously coupled by a fundamental field and its second harmonic. The second harmonic field acts as a control field and significantly influences the optical bistability. In addition, the two-color coherent control of optical bistability by the relative phase of the fundamental and the second harmonic fields is shown. The influence of the electronic cooperation parameter on the OB behavior is also discussed. This investigation may be used for optimizing and controlling the optical switching process in the SQW solid-state system, which is much more practical than that in the atomic system because of its flexible design and the controllable interference strength.

In this article, the dependence of bistability characteristic of the two-port nonlinear fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (TPNFMZI) on initial phase shift, wavelength of input signal, nonlinear coefficient of refractive index and length of nonlinear fiber is investigated and discussed. The results of this work play an important role in designing the TPNFMZI and its application in the future.
