We review the particle physics aspects of neutrino-less double beta decay. This process can be mediated by light massive Majorana neutrinos (standard interpretation) or by something else (non-standard interpretations). The physics potential of both interpretations is summarized and the consequences of future measurements or improved limits on the half-life of neutrino-less double beta decay are discussed. We try to cover all proposed alternative realizations of the decay, including light sterile neutrinos, supersymmetric or left-right symmetric theories, Majorons, and other exotic possibilities. Ways to distinguish the mechanisms from one another are discussed. Experimental and nuclear physics aspects are also briefly touched, alternative processes to double beta decay are discussed, and an extensive list of references is provided.

A brief review of new results and perspectives in neutrino physics is presented. An emphasis on a search for CP violation in neutrino oscillations and a search for sterile neutrinos is given. Status of measurement of the direct neutrino mass measurement and searches for neutrinoless double beta decay are also discussed.

We consider ββ0ν decay induced by light Majorana neutrino exchange between decaying nucleons, accompanied by, in particular, the slepton exchange inside a nucleon. This contribution to ββ0ν is generated from the Rp violating terms and the mixing of the standard light neutrinos with neutral heavy particles or light sterile neutrinos. To determine the unknown mixing factor Δ, we take into account the four-neutrino model with three ordinary neutrinos and one sterile neutrino. Imposing the current experimental lower half-life limit, a set of constraints on [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is obtained. Comparing with the limits on the products of the individual bounds on λ and λ′, we find that the former is stronger while the latter is weaker.
