AbstractThe results of this contribution are derived in the framework of functional type a posteriori error estimates. The error is measured in a combined norm which takes into account both the primal and dual variables denoted by x and y, respectively. Our first main result is an error equality for all equations of the class ${\mathrm{A}^{*}\mathrm{A}x+x=f}$ or in mixed formulation ${\mathrm{A}^{*}y+x=f}$, ${\mathrm{A}x=y}$, where the exact solution $(x,y)$ is in $D(\mathrm{A})\times D(\mathrm{A}^{*})$. Here ${\mathrm{A}}$ is a linear, densely defined and closed (usually a differential) operator and ${\mathrm{A}^{*}}$ its adjoint. In this paper we deal with very conforming mixed approximations, i.e., we assume that the approximation ${(\tilde{x},\tilde{y})}$ belongs to ${D(\mathrm{A})\times D(\mathrm{A}^{*})}$. In order to obtain the exact global error value of this approximation one only needs the problem data and the mixed approximation itself, i.e., we have the equality$\lvert x-\tilde{x}\rvert^{2}+\lvert\mathrm{A}(x-\tilde{x})\rvert^{2}+\lvert y-% \tilde{y}\rvert^{2}+\lvert\mathrm{A}^{*}(y-\tilde{y})\rvert^{2}=\mathcal{M}(% \tilde{x},\tilde{y}),$where ${\mathcal{M}(\tilde{x},\tilde{y}):=\lvert f-\tilde{x}-\mathrm{A}^{*}\tilde{y}% \rvert^{2}+\lvert\tilde{y}-\mathrm{A}\tilde{x}\rvert^{2}}$ contains only known data. Our second main result is an error estimate for all equations of the class ${\mathrm{A}^{*}\mathrm{A}x+ix=f}$ or in mixed formulation ${\mathrm{A}^{*}y+ix=f}$, ${\mathrm{A}x=y}$, where i is the imaginary unit. We will point out a motivation for the study of the latter problems by time discretizations or time-harmonic ansatz of linear partial differential equations and we will present an extensive list of applications including the reaction-diffusion problem and the eddy current problem.

We consider ana posteriorierror estimator for the Interior Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) approximation of the biharmonic equation based on the Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson (HHJ) mixed formulation. The error estimator is derived from a two-energies principle for the HHJ formulation and amounts to the construction of an equilibrated moment tensor which is done by local interpolation. The reliability estimate is a direct consequence of the two-energies principle and does not involve generic constants. The efficiency of the estimator follows by showing that it can be bounded from above by a residual-type estimator known to be efficient. A documentation of numerical results illustrates the performance of the estimator.

The main aim of this work was to investigate a numerical error in determining limit state functions, which describe the extreme magnitudes of steel structures with respect to random variables. It was assisted here by the global version of the response function method (RFM). Various approximations of trial points generated on the basis of several hundred selected reference composite functions based on polynomials were analyzed. The final goal was to find some criterion—between approximation and input data—for the selection of the response function leading to relative a posteriori errors less than 1%. Unlike the classical problem of curve fitting, the accuracy of the final values of probabilistic moments was verified here as they can be used in further reliability calculations. The use of the criterion and the associated way of selecting the response function was demonstrated on the example of steel diagrid grillages. It resulted in quite high correctness in comparison with extended FEM tests.

The lower bounds for the a posteriori prediction error of a nonlinear predictor realized as a neural network are provided. These are obtained for a priori adaptation and a posteriori error networks with sigmoid nonlinearities trained by gradient-descent learning algorithms. A contractivity condition is imposed on a nonlinear activation function of a neuron so that the a posteriori prediction error is smaller in magnitude than the corresponding a priori one. Furthermore, an upper bound is imposed on the learning rate η so that the approach is feasible. The analysis is undertaken for both feedforward and recurrent nonlinear predictors realized as neural networks.
