Machine Translation is a machine that is going to automatically translate given sentences in a language to other particular language. This paper aims to test the effectiveness of a new model of machine translation which is factored machine translation. We compare the performance of the unfactored system as our baseline compared to the factored model in terms of BLEU score. We test the model in German-English language pair using Europarl corpus. The tools we are using is called MOSES. It is freely downloadable and use. We found, however, that the unfactored model scored over 24 in BLEU and outperforms the factored model which scored below 24 in BLEU for all cases. In terms of words being translated, however, all of factored models outperforms the unfactored model.

This paper reports on an ongoing study into the affordances of free online machine translation for students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) at the tertiary level in Japan. The researchers are currently collecting data from a questionnaire, task performance, and interviews with 10-15 EFL learners in an English Language Institute in a university in Japan. The paper provides some background on the changing role of translation in language learning theory and pedagogy, before focusing literature related to technical developments in machine translation technology, and its application to foreign language learning. An overview of the research methodology is provided, along with some insights into potential findings. Findings will be presented in subsequent publications.

The paper deals with the pre-editing process before it goes through machine translation. The main argument is to improve the source in order to improve the raw output quality. The mentioned process is investigated through the prism of the concept of a globalized text, thus making contribution to the research into “translation and globalization paradigm” being of interest over the past years. The content analysis of original and Google-translated texts of the U.S. tourism portal allows one to point out some principles of composing a global English-language text that would make the process of English-Russian translation more simple and productive. We conclude that the content writer should take into account certain peculiarities of the translation process, and they have been pointed out as well.

This article applies a media geneaology perspective to examine the operative logic of Google Translate. Tracing machine translation from post–World War II (WWII) rule-based methods to contemporary algorithmic statistical methods, we analyze the underlying power structure of algorithmic and human collaboration that Translate encompasses. Focusing on the relationship between technology, language, and speakers, we argue that the operative logic of Translate represents a new model of translation, which we call uniform multilingualism. In this model, the manifest lingual plurality on the user side is mediated by lingual uniformity on the system side in the form of an English language algorithm, which has recently given way to an artificial neural network interlingual algorithm. We conclude by considering the significance of this recent shift in Translate’s algorithm.

Machine translation (MT) as a sub-field of computational linguistics represents one of the most advanced and applied translation dimensions as a research field. Translation divergence occurs when structurally similar sentences of the source language do not translate into sentences that are similar in structure in the target language" (Dorr, 1993). The sophistication in the domain of MT depends mainly on the identification of divergence patterns in a language pair. Many researchers in MT field including Dorr (1990, 1994) have emphasized that the best quality in MT can be achieved when an individual language pair in a particular context is described in detail. This paper attempts to explore the divergence patterns that characterize the translation of Kashmiri pronouns into English. The analysis in this paper has been restricted to the class of personal and possessive pronouns. Kashmiri has rich inflections and pronouns are marked for case, number, tense and gender and show complex agreement patterns. The paper identifies and outlines a wide variety of divergence patterns that characterize the Kashmiri English language pair. These divergence patterns are identified and summarized in order to improve the quality of the MT system that may be developed for Kashmiri English language pair in the near future and can also be utilized for other language pairs that are similar in terms of their structure and typological features.

Conversion of Bangla language to another native language and another language to Bangla language using Universal Networking Language (UNL) is highly demanding due to rapidly increasing the usage of Internet-based applications. UNL has been used by various researchers as an inter-lingual approach for an Automated Machine Translation (AMT) scheme. This article presents a novel work on construction of EnConverter for Bangla language with a special focus on generation of UNL attributes and resolving relations of Bangla text. The architecture of Bangla EnConverter, algorithms for understanding the Bangla input sentence; resolution of UNL relations; and attributes for Bangla text/language are also explained in this article. This article highlights the analysis rules for EnConverter and indicates its usage in generation of UNL expressions. This article presents the results of implementation of Bangla EnConverter and compares these with the system available at Russian and English Language Server.
