By using the advantages of C-type of traveling wave fault location method in distance measuring and the pattern recognition function of support vector machines (SVM),a new fault location method is presented.The first step of the method is determining the fault distance by C-type of traveling wave location method; the second one is locating the fault section by SVM. It also adopts the wavelet to reduce the noise of fault signal,and the accuracy can be more precise when the parameters of SVM are optimized.The simulation results of ATP and MATLAB show that the method can determine the single phase grounding fault point in 10kv distribution networks with branches accurately.

Traveling wave (TW)-based fault-location methods have been used to determine single-phase-to-ground fault distance in power-distribution networks. The previous approaches detected the arrival time of the initial traveling wave via single ended or multi-terminal measurements. Regarding the multi-branch effect, this paper utilized the reflected waves to obtain multiple arriving times through single ended measurement. Potential fault sections were estimated by searching for the possible traveling wave propagation paths in accordance with the structure of the distribution network. This approach used the entire propagation of a traveling wave measured at a single end without any prerequisite of synchronization, which is a must in multi-terminal measurements. The uniqueness of the fault section was guaranteed by several independent single-ended measurements. Traveling waves obtained in a real 10 kV distribution network were used to determine the fault section, and the results demonstrate the significant effectiveness of the proposed method.

On the basis of analysis on difficulty of a single phase grounding fault locating in distribution network, a fault location method using C-type of traveling wave is put forward. The C-type of traveling wave location method is off-line. This location method can not be affected by the signal intensity of traveling wave when the fault is taking place and would be used repeatedly. As a result, the measure accuracy is guaranteed. Through the simulation to traveling wave’s process of reflection and refraction by ATP, the result what simulation experiment shows by putting up model of 10kV line with 3 branches single phase grounding fault, we can compare waveform of the normal phase and the fault phase to find the first waveform distortion point and determine the fault location. The fault location precision meets accuracy requirements, so it is feasible to locate the fault by using C-type of traveling wave location method.

Background: A novel fault location method of HVDC transmission line based on a concentric relaxation principle is proposed in this paper. Methods: Due to the different position of fault, the instantaneous energy measured from rectifier and inverter are different, and the ratio k between them is the relationship to the fault location d. Through the analysis of amplitude-frequency characteristics, we found that the wave attenuation characteristic of low frequency in the traveling wave is stable, and the amplitude of energy is larger, so we get the instantaneous energy ratio by using the low-frequency data. By using the method of wavelet packet decomposition, the voltage traveling wave signal was decomposed. Results: Finally, calculate the value k. By using the data fitting, the relative function of k and d can be got, that is the fault location function. Conclusion: After an exhaustive evaluation process considering different fault locations, fault resistances, and noise on the unipolar DC transmission system, four-machine two-area AC/DC parallel system, and an actual complex grid, the method presented here showed a very accurate and robust behavior.
