The use of the internet has increased significantly with the continued increase in wireless communication devices. Recently, there is a large number of research contribution focused on Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). Multi-homing is an important feature of SCTP which improves the communication performance by usage of multiple paths during association establishment, and it can bring significant improvements of throughput. In this thesis we evaluate the performance of SCTP and TCP traffic in the WLANs and we investigate the SCTP multi-homing to improve the communication performance in WLANs. We conducted some experiments to evaluate the performance of SCTP multi-homed host under various channel bit rates and mobility speeds. The results indicate that when the intensity of background traffic increases the SCTP multi-homed host with higher channel bit rate has better performance. In addition, the SCTP multi-homed host with using lower mobility speed has higher performance (throughput, delay and packet loss).

This paper describes measurements of the impact of background traffic on speech quality in an environment of WLANs (IEEE 802.11). The simulated background traffic consists of three types of current traffics in telecommunication networks such as data transfer service, multimedia streaming service, and Web service. The background traffic was generated by means of the accomplished Distributed Internet Traffic Generator (D-ITG). The impact of these types of traffic and traffic load on speech quality using the test sequence and speech sequences is the aim of this paper. The assessment of speech quality is carried out by means of the accomplished Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) algorithm. The proposal of a new method for improved detection of the critical conditions in wireless telecommunication networks from the speech quality point of view is presented in this paper. Conclusion implies the next application of the method of improved detection of critical conditions for the purpose of algorithms for link adaptation from the speech quality point of view in an environment of WLANs. The primary goal of these algorithms is improving speech quality in the VoWLAN connections, which are established in the competent link.

The content-rich multimedia streaming will be the most attractive services in the next-generation networks. With function of distribute data across multipath end-to-end paths based on SCTP's multihoming feature, concurrent multipath transfer SCTP (CMT-SCTP) has been regarded as the most promising technology for the efficient multimedia streaming transmission. However, the current researches on CMT-SCTP mainly focus on the algorithms related to the data delivery performance while they seldom consider the background traffic factors. Actually, background traffic of realistic network environments has an important impact on the performance of CMT-SCTP. In this paper, we firstly investigate the effect of background traffic on the performance of CMT-SCTP based on a close realistic simulation topology with reasonable background traffic in NS2, and then based on the localness nature of background flow, a further improved retransmission algorithm, namedRTX_CSI, is proposed to reach more benefits in terms of average throughput and achieve high users' experience of quality for multimedia streaming services.
