ABSTRACTCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns the use of one-way valves or vents in free masks for potential threat of spreading COVID-19 through expelled respiratory droplets. Here, we have developed a nanoceutical cotton fabric duly sensitized with non-toxic zinc oxide nanomaterial for potential use as membrane filter in the one way valve for the ease of breathing without the threat of COVID-19 spreading. A detailed computational study revealed that zinc oxide nanoflowers (ZnO NF) with almost two-dimensional petals trap SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins, responsible to attach to ACE-2 receptors in human lung epithelial cells. The study also confirm significant denaturation of the spike proteins on the ZnO surface, revealing removal of virus upon efficient trapping. Following the computational study, we have synthesized ZnO NF on cotton matrix using hydrothermal assisted strategy. Electron microscopic, steady-state and picosecond resolved spectroscopic studies confirm attachment of ZnO NF to the cotton (i.e., cellulose) matrix at atomic level to develop the nanoceutical fabric. A detailed antimicrobial assay using Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria (model SARS-CoV-2 mimic) reveals excellent anti-microbial efficiency of the developed nanoceutical fabric. To our understanding the novel nanoceutical fabric used in one-way valve of a face mask would be the choice to assure breathing comfort along with source control of COVID-19 infection. The developed nanosensitized cloth can also be used as antibacterial/anti CoV-2 washable dress material in general.GRAPHICAL ABSTRACTA novel nanoceutical cotton fabric duly sensitized with non-toxic zinc oxide nanoflower can potentially be used as membrane filter in the one way valve of face mask to assure breathing comfort along with source control of COVID-19 infection. The nanoceutical fabric denatures the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and makes the microorganism ineffective.

Introduction: Despite the available guidelines, opinions of many surgeons are quite ambiguous when it comes to the therapy of pilonidal sinus disease. The treatment can be a frustrating problem both for the surgeon and the patient because it is associated with wound complications and high recurrence rate. The objective of this study was to analyze the results of patients with pilonidal sinus disease undergoing the Karydakis flap procedure. Methods: A total of 27 patients treated for primary and recurrent pilonidal disease using the Karydakis flap procedure at our department between October 23, 2018 and November 22, 2019 were analyzed prospectively. We evaluated postoperative wound healing, complications and recurrence of the disease in a short-term follow-up period. Disease recurrence was defined as prolonged healing or as a new disease requiring repeated surgery. Results: In December 2019 all 27 patients came for a follow-up visit. The result was a fully lateralized wound without any signs of a new disease in all patients. In May 2020 a follow-up visit by phone was performed. The median follow-up was 12 months. The healing process was free of any serious complications in 25 patients. Seroma formation cases were managed by puncture in the outpatient setting. Conclusion: According to the available evidence and guidelines, off-midline procedures – the Karydakis flap, Bascom cleft lift, and Limberg flap procedures – are associated with lower recurrence rates and better wound healing. An important goal is to achieve complete wound lateralization and to change the configuration of the gluteal cleft by reshaping it, which results in a nicely flattened gluteal crease.

Aims and Objectives: The study is carried out with an objective to compare the diagnostic nasal endoscopic findings and radiological appearance in patients with paranasal sinus disease. Methods: 50 cases of chronic sinusitis not responding to routine medical line of treatment were selected and operated after being thoroughly investigated by means of nasal endoscopy and CT scan.  Results: Out of 50 cases, 35 underwent bilateral surgery and 15 underwent unilateral surgery, so a total of 85 procedures were carried out. Findings of both the CT scan as well as diagnostic nasal endoscopy were compared to each other and ultimately correlated with operative findings.  Conclusion: In our study, a high association is found between both the modalities of investigation i.e CT scan and diagnostic nasal endoscopy with one scoring over the other in different parameters. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy is found to be highly sensitive investigatory modality for parameters like frontal recess, spheno-ethmoid recess and hiatus semilunaris, where as CT scan is found to be highly sensitive for parameters like maxillary sinus, uncinate process and posterior ethmoids. So, a case of sinus disease should be diagnosed as early as possible using both these modalities as together they complement each other. Early diagnosis and effective management cures the pathology and prevents disastrous complications.
