Abstract NAVFAC is a system of some 4200 workstations to manage U.S. Naval Facilities world-wide. The system applications are from the architectural, cartographic, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering disciplines. NAVFAC includes a Modeling and Drawing Management System (MDMS) to manage the tens of thousands disparate files in the environment. IBM responded to the dozens of detailed requirements for MDMS with a custom-built solution which includes several innovations in the areas of configuration management, version control, and globally distributed file management.

Workflow management system is playing more and more significant role in business process management (BPM) and office automation (OA) of enterprises[. It can improve the efficiency and manageability of an enterprises daily teamwork, control as well as coordinate the processes[. Traditionally, it is not easy for the workflow modeling method to describe the complex business process clearly and intuitively. In this paper we improved the role based workflow model, and proposed a workflow modeling method based on multi-role playing. It is possible to make the modeling easier and simpler when we come to the complex business process modeling problems. Finally, an example of a B/S based Enterprise Financial Reimbursement Management System (EFRMS) is demonstrated to prove the convenience and feasibility about the method mentioned.

Drawing Management System (DMS) has begun to be used more and more widely in modern enterprise and public institution. It has become one of the necessary tools to improve image file management efficiency. A subsystem model based on three layer of structure is put forward in this paper which meets Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) standard. The model consists of workflow interaction, process management system, message mechanism, workflow engine. Each module finishes their own job to realize the auto run of DMS’s files.

To overcome the deficiency of descriptive ability, cross-platform ability and interaction in existing workflow system, this article proposes an interactive workflow management system based on J2EE technical. The system uses hierarchical description's method to simplify the workflow model, supports the visual modeling, and has the good interaction. The practical application shows that the system has obvious advantages on enhancing descriptive power, reducing the modeling complexity, strengthening model interactivity ability and cross-platform ability.
