In this paper, two efficient control algorithms are discussed viz., Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and Dynamic Matrix Controller (DMC) and their applicability has been demonstrated through case study with a complex interacting process viz., a laboratory based four tank liquid storage system. The process has Two Input Two Output (TITO) structure and is available for experimental study. A mathematical model of the process has been developed using first principles. Model parameters have been estimated through the experimentation results. The performance of the controllers (LQR and DMC) has been compared to that of industrially more accepted PID controller.

The implementation of variable damping systems to increase the adaptability of mechanical structures to their working environment has been gaining increasing scientific interest, and numerous attempts have been devoted to address vibration control by means of active and semi-active devices. Although research results seem promising in some cases, the proposed solutions are often not able to fulfill requirements in terms of compactness and simplicity on one hand, and dynamic performance on the other. In this context, the present paper discusses the modeling and control of an electrohydrostatic actuation (EHA) system for its implementation as a damping device. A model of the device is proposed and analyzed for design purposes. Subsequently, a damping control strategy is presented. Finally, a case study introduces and validates an EHA prototype for helicopter rotor blade lead–lag damping.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to debates about the relationship between trust and control in the governance of inter-organisational relationships. In particular, the authors focus on the question of how the relationship between trust and control shifts over time. Design/methodology/approach An in-depth case study was conducted in a company operating in the aerospace industry. The authors aim to understand this company’s practices and, at the same time, to use the case study to deepen the knowledge of the complex trust/control nexus. The authors follow the changes in the relationship between trust and control as the company restructured its supply chain, and discuss issues which it had to address in the later phases of the supply chain restructuring. Findings The paper illustrates the duality of the trust/control nexus. The authors show how the studied company coped with the complex relationships with its suppliers as collaboration increased. The authors identify particular control mechanisms that the company developed to manage such complexity, such as a supplier strategy and a relationship profile tool. Research limitations/implications The paper studies supply chain restructuring and the changing relationship of trust and control over time only from the perspective of the assembler/manufacturer which “owns”/manages the supply chain. Originality/value The authors observe a move from inter-personal trust to inter-organisational trust. Furthermore, the authors illustrate how managers can intervene to maintain and stabilise trust and ensure that trust and control do not degrade or escalate beyond desirable levels.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce a more practical approach for supply chain performance measurement (SCPM) and to approve the promising role of internet of things (IoT) technologies in SCPM systems. Design/methodology/approach This is a conceptual paper that includes literature review analysis, designing a new approach for SCPM, and a case study scenario for proving its applicability. Findings The case study scenario shows that IoT can enhance SCPM, as it has the capability to enable real-time data collection, increase data efficiency as long as enable real-time communication within the supply chain (SC). Practical implications The proposed approach can help to develop performance measurement systems and applications enabled by IoT technologies. These systems can be used to monitor, manage, and control the overall SC in real time and in a more integrated and cooperative manner. Originality/value This paper provides a structured systems building approach tailored to show how to employ IoT technologies in the field of SCPM. This approach could help in establishing new performance measurement applications, and it is believed that both practitioners and researchers will benefit from it.
