Over-voltage and over-current problems of locomotives when passing phase separation and negative sequence current penetration seriously influence the safety of double-track electrified railway and public power systems. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a novel uninterruptible power supply phase separation passing and power quality compensation (UPSP-PQC) scheme for double-track electrified railway. Three working modes of UPSP-PQC are put forward, including uninterruptible phase separation passing mode, power quality compensation mode and uninterruptible phase separation passing priority, and power quality compensation optimum mode. A three-leg modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology of UPSP-PQC is proposed and the corresponding control strategy has been studied. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation is performed to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed scheme and its control method.

In today’s Swedish and Norwegian low frequency railway power system the voltage at a converter is controlled such that its voltage will drop with increased reactive power output. However, for low frequency railways the influence of active power on voltage is larger compared to public power systems and alternative methods are interesting to investigate. This paper presents a modified voltage control law for increased load sharing between converter stations and reduce the risk for converter overload in low frequency railways power systems. The modified voltage control law is derived mathematically and tested with different droops for two case studies. The results confirms the increased load sharing between the converter stations. The results are analysed and discussed; ideas are presented to counteract some of the negative impacts of the modified voltage control law.

The application of electric power, which acts as a pillar energy and economic artery in modern society, is one of the most important symbols of the level of development and comprehensive national power of a country. Var is a crucial factor for the design and operation of AC power systems, and is closely bound up with the safety, stabilization, and economical operation of power systems. With the development of electrified railway, the importance of the dynamic var compensation for traction power supply systems of electrified railway becomes more and more distinct. Developing the var compensation strategy vigorously has important senses in theory and practice. In this article, synthetically considering technique and economic leval of power systems in our country, parameters modeling and design and verification and specific engineering application of a var compensation method are presented. This method is a preferable one for resolving undesirable effect on power systems from traction power supply systems of electrified railway, especially having dynamic and real time characteristics of var compensation.
